I specifically remember a big-name magazine in the late 90s having an article on Slipknot, and in one of those side-box items with some trivia about the band, they had a little list of the band's top 5 favorite records, and When the Kite String Pops was on that list. If anybody remembers the magazine, speak up!

Its my own theory that acid bath was influenced by candlemass, especially dax Riggs compared to messiah marcolin...my ear picked this up one day during a listen to candlemass ; specially a few songs. Thr song black stone wielder and Scream of the butterfly for examples.
I know Corey is a big Acid bath fan but over I really don't hear any comparison to them until maybe bol. 3 and I'm sure that's Corey's influence. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Slipknot still came out of the gate as an original band in the beginning but yes, they eventually let influence leak out after a few albums.
The first Slipknot album does reminds me of Acid Bath sometimes And To be honest Slipknot's Influence reminds me of KoRn, Helmet (First 4 Albums), Acid Bath, and Faith No More (King For A Day album) combined

The original Lineup they were an 8 piece band and Mike Patton always wore an S&M mask and they all wore jumpsuits and masks.
