"99 Luftballons" is a song by German new wave band Nena about how one thing can lead to another very quickly simply because of mistakes made by those in power. The lyrics tell a fictional story of how people mistook 99 balloons for UFOs, leading to military escalation by several nations. In the end, a cataclysmic war begins, devastation on all sides without a victor, as indicated in the line: "99 Jahre Krieg ließen keinen Platz für Sieger," which means "99 years of war have left no place for winners." This song was no doubt made as an antiwar protest and was most likely inspired by the fear of nuclear war between NATO and the USSR.
    Notes by James Waters

There are other really really bad covers of this tune on youtube, but this one actually has a good singer and musicians who captured the NENA vibe. Good work. The other attempts are without any of the original soul/mojo/feel but this comes a lot closer than the others. Peace to all. -Smythie
