This tutorial shows you how to get a complete set up of IceCast with live streaming from a microphone or line in jack. Also you can learn to embed your stream in your webpage using FFMP3. Edcast also known as oddcast or eddcast is dead by the way, so we use Broadcast Using This Tool or BUTT.
By the way, what are some suggestions for a better screen recorder?

I'm currently in the middle of an upgrade for my college radio station now, I'm using Icecast and I have gotten live metadata to update, and best of all, it's using HTML5 and it works on mobile. As soon as I have successfully gotten this project done I'll make a new tutorial on how to do it.

I considered it, but winamp is a large download and it takes a rather roundabout path to get audio from a mic, or line input for that matter, onto a stream with winamp. I chose to do it this way, but you can do whatever way you see fit.

Actually the .m3u file is just a text file. If you open it up in notepad you'll see that it lists the location of the mp3 stream right in there. Basically, you already are streaming in mp3
So i've linked butt to icecast, I can listen to myself casting, but how can I get other people to listen me? When i post them the URLs that allow myself to listen to my stream, they get unable to connect or server not found

I'd be willing to bet that you've already figured this out since your comment is a bit old on a much older video but for anyone reading this in the future there are some things to consider before following this tutorial. The tutorial shows you how to setup a LIVE ice cast stream. The stream you have setup is local to your network alone. You need to port forward your local stream to an external IP address which you will then want to hide behind a hosted URL. If you do this PLEASE make sure that you have changed your username and password because if anyone was to find the stream dashboard they'd have access to information you don't want to give out publicly.
Hello, first of this tutorial was helpful to me, now I have some doubts that I could not overcome, where access to the radio firefox opens a window to download all the songs that I have no playlist winamp and other doubts is like opening a video by the same system.

No the player is not needed. It sounds like you might be having a DNS or IP address issue. If your hosting this from home you'll probably want a static IP address, or a dynamic DNS address. I could be wrong though.
Can I talk over with any microphone while the music is playing? If it is possible, how could I do that?

Sure. 2:31 in my video is what I think you mean. The address is the server you are connecting to. BUTT acts like it is making a phone call so it contacts 127.0.0.1 and when icecast picks up BUTT sends the audio.I'll use another analogy for the port. Servers are like castles, they have lots of doors. Port numbers are the door numbers. So, once BUTT reaches the castle of 127.0.0.1 it needs to knock on door 8000 and the castle door opens.
It does not connect what am i doing wrong i cannot even start the icecast server that i installed and the configuration panel is just blank
If you watch closely, there is an option for shoutcast in butt. Try that, should solve things.

I'm not entirely sure whether or not BUTT will work with shoutcast, but I'm contemplating doing another tutorial with newer software just to keep everything up to date.

So if i want to set up a playlist of a nomber of songs mp3...can keep the radio ON if i turn off the computer, so the listeners will listen the playlist i chosed. and where i upload song if yes ?
So in the BUTT settings you should use whatever reference you can to point to your icecast server. Let's say your server is at 8.8.8.8 as an example. In BUTT you put the ip address here. Let's also say that 8.8.8.8 has a web address, or URL, of example.com. In BUTT you should be able to/could put the web address in your settings. Icecast by default accepts the audio source on port 8000. Unless you changed this, the port in both programs needs to be the same.

Thank you, Phoenix, for this tutorial. I got everything going and then like a dumb-dumb, realized that I wanted the option to take callers. Not sure if my pc could handle that load, I've looked into virtual DJ and mixxx, was wondering if you or anybody had any ideas about 3rd party software to do stuff like have callers..otherwise, looks like I'm shelling out some dough for the service. Thanks again !

im having some problems with butt encoder, i want to add a mic and play a radio show. time to reconfigure from mic to main cast has a bit of a delay as i need to stop and restart stream all the time i want to talk live

Ok, so NCH has some software that will take in a land line phone and dial out for you. Microsoft used to include a program called dialer.exe and netmeeting.exe, I remember using those back in the day to make phone calls over land line. If you want to use VOIP option look into Skype and some plugins to record calls.

Something is misconfigured, check that all of the required things are set up properly. This is the address of the icecast server, it's open port, and password. Also check your firewalls.
other question i don't have web player at all on the icecast2 how you did this ?
@cprime123 The IP address is the computer that BUTT is sending the stream to. Consider every computer a castle with many doors. The IP address is like a mailbox address. The port is basically what door to use. In my case I sent the stream out of my castle and right back in through the same door. Also BUTT and IceCast operate like a pitcher, catcher and umpire. BUTT throws the audio to IceCast and the umpire listens to the stream from there.

You would need an external mixer to do that or more computer experience and know how to set up your sound card properly.

I'll have to agree with the majority in the negative area for this video. Icecast never opens and shows a gui and has the functions and features in the video. What ver of Icecast do you have that does this???? Annoying things about these videos and the technology world we have work with. All I get when I START Icecast is a BLACK window looking like the backward dark days of DOS,,,,says STARTING...then some quick dialog in the box and it's gone! Don't know if the frickin Icecast is working or not. Might be best to look for something else.

Read the Sam Broadcaster documentation. This is the wrong place to post such a question since it is not immediately related to BUTT or Icecast.

Excuse me for not knowing anything about technology, but I have a question about the player folder at 6:20. When you were locating the player.index.html did you have to create the player folder? When you opened up your player folder you already had all those files in there, but I have no idea what I need to do to get them I've been following your video for hours and I just now got to this step just to get stuck again. LOLWUT? Sorry, replying to all these comments is making me snarky. To set up playlists use vlc or winamp or radioDJ or even windows media player to do that. Each one of these requires a slightly different solution to stream the music to icecast. Basically, icecast streams one file, the audio, you decide what the audio will be. Simple answer: no
Whn im trying to edit the status.xsl file it keeps saying the file is open in another program. Ive tried closing everything. Also checked task manager to no avail. Help would be greatly appriciated.
You have to edit the icecast configuration files. I do that at 5:10 again this is for more advanced people and you could really stop the tutorial at 5:10 and be done.
one complication i do not understand when i stream through sambroadcaster. it streams through my localhost and not a public domain i tested my local host ip adress at other computers and it will not work.

This tutorial is already out of date. The software appears differently to how he displays it and it's a mess.

How is it different if a person wants to stream a DVD with VLC Media player, to a friend on their VLC Media player?

It is possible as long as you know how to secure your PC. You need to use your public IP address and it should be static.

I downloaded and installed icecast but there's no shortcut and the exe file doesn't even run. Just opens then closes in fractions of a second. You also skip over many things... This tutorial is definitely not the best and quite frankly it's pretty damn useless.
Here is what IceCast FAQ say:
What happened to the Windows GUI? I only see a black window with some text.
Icecast used to have a graphical user interface on Windows, but that was deprecated in 2.3.3 as it wasn’t frequently used and hard to maintain. Considering that most of the things the GUI could do now are possible using the Icecast web interface, it’s not needed anymore.
The black window with text you see is the command line running the Icecast server, just keep that window open. When you want to quit Icecast, hit Ctrl+C and confirm that you want to quit.
I asked Common Commentaries to check his firewall settings and report back. He has not reported back.

Like I say in my video, doing the streaming on a webpage is kind of advanced. You should probably ask someone more well versed to do it for you.
Ok, so here is a rundown of how I think things should be set up. BUTT runs on your home computer. Icecast runs on your web server. So in the ffmp3 website at 6:46 you have to set up the code with the location of the icecast stream. So if your website and icecast are on the same server I would actually use "scottsdesk(dot)net(slash)stream" rather than 127.0.0.1 but there are other solutions. Does this work for you?

Password: Pretty simple, if they don't match up between butt and icecast your stream wont go through. Mountpoint: can be anything, just don't have two streams going to icecast that are the same mountpoint. Lets say I have a country music stream and a rock stream. I send them both to icecast using the mountpoint "strean" because I'm lazy. This isn't good practice and could make troubleshooting really hard. Stream info at 2:49 is just some arbitrary info that I send with my stream, not required.
