Back in childhood, I harvested Renault brochures every time I tagged along with my Dad when he visited the (not-very-local) dealer. He owned a series of Renaults over the years (and I picked up the habit once I could afford my own motor). The dealer was making enough out of Dad that they could afford to bear the cost of my pillaging. The 1978 range brochure in this video was one of my first acquisitions. I had two R5s myself, the first being a (catastrophically rusty) 1982 GTL with a 5-speed gearbox attached to an 1108cc engine for even better economy than the early GTL. I was so set upon THAT model (just for that extra gear - and fabulous high-backed seats) that I ignored more important things like not being ripped off and not getting a rust bomb. To this day, I wish Dad had stepped in and stopped me spending all my money on that car - but it was lovely. I wish I'd kept all the brochures of my childhood, but I was forced to dispose of boxfulls of them when I decamped to university.
So you are saying 5 GTL is good for tractor work n rounding up the sheep but been more efficient at the fuel pump. Heck those other engines rev like V8.
Grabbing more fuel economy from an engine was big business in Europe. The low down torque of the GTL would probably have also been very suited to a Renault 4.
Very interesting comments about the five GTL! You ve just pointed the utmost quality of that car, second being a more relaxed and confortable ride because of the more silent engine and ability to run around modern machines… Having owned 13 different models of the five around the years,I should argue this model is perhaps the most coherent of the line,if not the most confortable or the performer! Thanks
@@t2stu The 4 GTL was given the same treatment, in a way. The GTL produced the same amount of power as the TL with the 845cc engine, but at lower revs and with more torque, as in the the 5. Even in the larger R18 there was a GTL model with a lower tune version of the 1647cc engine & higher hearing.

Thanks for the story.
Is it a GTL? I wish I owned a Renault 5
Mr Smith..... I've been waiting for you to reply.

Thanks for that. I did wonder about the later R4 GTL and other GTL's within the ranges.
