I grew up around Atlanta, the city that birth trap music hip hop pioneers and culture icons, so I'm intrigued by what these kids are creating in Japan. It's interesting seeing all the different influences of Black American hip hop music, Black English (aka. "AAVE"), and Black American fashion in this underground culture of Japan. I had no clue it was this popular out there. I definitely got to check out this scene when I visit Japan one day.
Hip hop is just too big atp. But if you look at what all the kids who would’ve been punks or something 20 years ago are listening to it’s all influenced by the people who really pushed the sound in the 2010s. Like chief keef, yung lean, future, lil peep x and all the other SoundCloud kids. Also edm and hyper pop it’s all a mashup. Traditional hip hop or gangster rap will always have a spot in the US and other places but now those sounds are incorporated into more artistic avenues. It’s just the way culture works same w blues and r&b.
Cultural Exchange between US and Japan has been huge in the underground electronic scene for the past 10 years or so. The story of Vaporwave is a wild one. Invented in the West, then popularized in anime circles which mixed the genre with old Japanese music samples, which then led to the revitalization of City Pop in Japan. See also what happened to Future Bass and Nu Funk, which started with acts like Flume in the West and now has a very cutesy anime aesthetic because Japanese producers got a hold on it. Now it's an extremely popular subgenre of music, being used in things like Sonic Mania. The rate of East-West cultural exchange is crazy r n thanks to online music platforms.

japan's music culture is directly inspired by most music in the US especially genres made by black americans, only reason they were able to go in said direction is because of the artists that came and created music before them.

It's such a dream and a lifestyle. I hope they continue to keep doing what they are doing and maybe one day I'll get to meet them and hang out with them. Love you guys
Just discovered them and now I’ma fan 4L 🌟 can’t wait to see them shine more!
I remember seeing Tahiti's music on my YT feed .. awesome to know such a detailed take on their group ..
Awesome cinematography too !
yes more exposure to them, they deserve it
facts
5:09 Reanimating Renton Thurson (Eureka Seven) 😆
They act like they were deprived of freedom lol But I actually like this group and hoping they would collaborate with 4s4ki. It's cool to see the underground scene in Japan allows people to use their phones during concerts/battles.
their stories are already inspiring. I love their energy and sound💜 great vid.
ガールフレンドにメイクしてもらったりして微笑ましい♡Tahiti手先器用なのギャップ!普段見れない一面が見てれ嬉しい最高の動画!
xavier wulf reference is what got me. hes got taste.
this group seems really cool :) i vibe with their music - on another note, I want to go to japan so bad because it just looks amazing. also goddamn all of their girlfriends were so cute LMAO
i rlly hope hype and fame wont influence their music, cus i feel like as soon artists get a lot of fame, their music style often changes. so just stay as u are guysss!!
I accidentally found their song Star Island forever ago, loved it, but forgot to save it, now this documentary popped up. So happy to see them thriving and getting to see more of them is awesome
ほんとみんな生まれてきてくれて
出会ってチーム組んでくれてありがとう。俺の人生は彼らのおかげで変わったよ
最高すぎ!!
この動画だけで半年くらい生きていける

i just found out about STARKIDS and i absolutely love them!! watching this.. they seem like such fun, genuine people, and im wishing all the best for them!!
The guy with one speaker and 0.75 heaphones might be my spirit animal.
I make music and fashion in DTLA. I think this group is amazing. come to LA. we support all of this!!!! you have a studio space with a fashion studio all in one at your disposal.
Not my style of music but, I respect the hell out of the DIY spirit these kids have. Love from NYC.
This was really good..No words to describe talented people who make music from the heart that one day hopefully will inspire generations...I love Japanese culture Asian Culture as a whole..This for me was so inspiring to watch and see..From a creative stand point..thank you..!
I'm 36 never been to Japan and slowly teaching myself japanese I have always loved the culture but I will probably never get the chance to go because I'm at the lowest part of my life I'm like one step away from homeless on the streets but I love music and making music and studying different things all things. But teaching myself japanese has been a hurdle I been trying to jump for years even if I never really get to use it I believe I was Japanese in a past life.
Keep your head up, speak your life into existence
Hats off to Rubier, the edits and filmmaking were🧨
Shout out from California! Keep up the great job guys!!! 🔥
Dang, I know the video is mainly about Starkids but I'm just focusing on the cinematography of Dazed. I wonder what camera do they use and if they used a filter at like 6:55 or no. Great quality even during low lights...
This shit is so dope. Just being able to do wtvr tf you want and not letting shit hold you back. Its super cool that they have such a close friend group bcs its rlly hard out here for artistic kids who havent found their people yet. keep fucking goin!!!!!!
They're so cool and the production quality of this video is incredible
THEY ARE LIVING THE LIFE, I might aswell start trying some new things with mine...
Love their sound and the message they wanna spread with their music. Can’t wait to see what they do next
This is really cool! This inspires me, keep working hard fellas!
cant wait to meet my people through my music too. its crazy how this pops up on my recommended right now
It’s crazy that they talk the same as me, even though I’m in America
No. I agree with you. When you think about it, there will be similar tones in all countries no matter where you go.
This is amazing to see. Star Kids have already made their mark on the music scene and im eager to see all the magic you guys can make!!
あーーー絶対ライブいきたい…‼️‼️

can somebody make a time stamp list with each featured song
0:49 : starwalk (tahiti and levi)

17:08 : (space boy)

19:09 : make it loud
will complete this when i get more into their music !
Fire doc! I hope they make it, more than they have already!
STARKIDS UP!
Benxni on his scooter is my spirit animal. This whole group has a lot of talent, hope they break into the American scene so I can see em live some day
How do some of these guys speak English so well? Especially the ones that didn't live in NA?
My mans only has 1 working speaker and 1 working headphone and still produces and mixes their songs so well lmao
Criminally underviewed video
I’m starting to get into hyperpop lately and producing. I’m very much new to all this but the passion is definitely there. This video is inspiring af 💗
thank you Jeremy for this raw, visceral journey across different cultures 🙏🏻
only a matter of time until they make it mainstream!
出会えてよかったライブ行けて幸せ
STARKIDSは確実にシーン作った!
YABAI⭐️
They remind me of (sic)boy and BLOOM VASE. Both are japanese artists to carry a similar vibe
that tread beat at around 10:35 is hard
Do you know the beat @16:02 Shiiit was a Banger!
Man as an American I love Japan's music culture. It really seems like people are more willing to follow whatever direction you want to go musically, whereas in the US you mainly have to put out something that aligns with what people already want to hear.
not true at all, you can put out any music you want in the US and tour with it, just gotta have connections and also zero expectations and keep grinding, these guys have 7k ig followers, they aren't big, they'd just be a step above playing basement shows here in the US, they just have a video about them because both hyperpop and japan = easy clicks
i don't think that's true at all. we have a divrse music culture in the US, hyperpop exists here too lol. if you're referring to what hits the billboard hot 100, that would happen with any country, including japan. these guys aren't big artists in japan, it's the same over there.
japan's music culture is directly inspired by most music in the US especially genres made by black americans, only reason they were able to go in said direction is because of the artists that came and created music before them.
video shot/edited gas af props fr
This shit is so gas I don’t have the slightest clue what going on but I fw the movement heavyy ¡!
I F with this bro! This is so Fire!! All about vibes and I am jumping on this ride
their passion to music is so contagious and i love it!
