Parineeti was a revelation for me here. The way you said that she was a splash of water is so true. Like the first time she appeared on screen as of the movie went silent, the tone calmed, the frames slowed. Beautiful.

Watching Chamkila was an experience, I’m so happy that my guy Imtiaz Ali is back with a banger. Also, this review is another master class in itself, you’ve outdone yourself Sucharita, love the choice of words! ❤❤❤
After Sholay , Chamkila is my Next favourite Hindi movie of all time. Imtiaz Sir captured so much in 2 Hours, 25 minutes. Acting, Direction, Editing, Songs, Story,Cinematography, Camerawork, Locations,Casting, Suspense, Struggle of a Artist, Rise of a Artist, Society's Hypocrisy, Politics , Drama and much more compressed in small time frame. Sheer Masterpiece. A perfect film.
Chamkila is not a figure that deserved this reverential treatment. It is a rehabilitation project for Imtiaz Ali through the hype, respectability and stature of Diljit. Even the sets that could have been easily copied like tents are not copied diligently. Anyways, Chamkila's art was about domestic violence, sexual exploitation, treating sister in law as a forbidden fruit ready to be pounced upon, p3d0ph1lia etc. How are these themes acceptable as art? Why was Chamkila famous? Because this was era of green revolution, people had money even the labourers, Punjab had extensive road network constructed due to efforts of scientist MS Randhawa who wanted to transport grain quickly to prevent rot, and due to roads it was first time artists became accessible to normal public. Chamkila's art was on women, and his imagery was very fundamentally poetic yet corrosive. The hooks and chorus of the songs were memorable, his tumbi skills were top notch. All this meant easily memorable songs, giving edge to the material theme of women. His art was not good art at all. His character was similar, in real life he was domestic abuser. He married Amarjot to ensure no competing artist could give an offer to Amarjot and break the band away. Second marriage without divorcing first wife was to bind Amarjot in a contract. It was exploitative relationship. Amarjot used to cover bruises up with make up, used to be silent in the Ambassador car. If Imtiaz Ali saw resistance as a theme in Punjab, the movie should have been on Amarjot, not Chamkila.
@@someonefromsomewhere6650 What he did to Amarjot, nobody will explore because it cannot be commercialized. Amarjot was successful singer before Chamkila. She was singing with 3 reputed singers. Amarjot's singing was high pitch, similar to Chamkila's. Chamkila recognized it, and exploited it. Chamkila was after all a great musician, but his gift was not a gift for everyone involved. Amarjot, the person who died with him, is not legally recognized as his wife. Movie sidelines this aspect totally.
I don't think he has been made too good in the film. Infact, he himself says that he knows his art might be corrosive but it's what sells. But did he deserve to be killed for it ??

I am in deep admiration of your the work you put behind your reviews. Not limiting them to the story, performances, actors but trivia around the movies, drawing parallels with other art forms/ movies/ stories. Analysis/ showcasing the layers within the stories/ society and fitting all that research/ thought process & movie review in 5 - 7,8 mins videos. Awesome sauce!
A brilliant gem of a flick ..... loved every minute of it, the social commentary which is more relevant now !!!! Only an Intelligent film maker like Imtiaz Ali could've managed to pull it off and HOW !!!!! that "Naram KAALJA" sequence is just mesmerising ..... wowowowowowwo . Hats off to the entire team of this awesome flick .
The Movie is another deeper, layered and more desi reminder of Imtiaz‘s genius the one we saw in Rockstar. Kudos to the director and supreme performance of actors Parineeti and Diljit Dosanjh for re-creating and era gone-by. Stark, unapologetic, instinctual making us stand face to face with desire, it’s manifestation, it’s quenching and it’s constricting space in society. A masterpiece!!!
What an accurate description and review 👍 And yes i too felt that at times the movie felt like a docuseries all set in one episode... The real footage+ the reel footage + animation +voiceovers......
Born in wrong times. After rockstar this was a movie which touched something inside of me in terms of religion, society, politics and hypocrisy built around it. Chamkila was just Niki Minaj or Ariana grande or any pop artist from today but born in wrong times. I’m sure this is still prevalent in India, esp in rural India. But he was a real artist, how many minds he must have challenged and changed, how many minds he must have inspired to be themselves, how many unnecessary taboos he must have broken, that’s what real artists do. And that’s what Imitaz Ali, AR Rahman, Diljit Dosanj and Parineeti Chopra did by playing such pivotal roles in bringing this story to us. It was a beautifully put together art piece❤
Very surprised that why isn't any media channel speaking about the movie '22 Chamkila Forever' which had released in 2022, this was the 1st original biopic movie of Amar Singh Chamkila that had been made in Punjabi. The movie was made and acted by my fellow friend Deepa Rai.
I grew up listening to chamkila songs but not his every song was ashleel, he sung songs like baba tera nankana, kande sirhind diye, sajna de nal dhokha lai kamaida, takue te takua, ki zor gareeban da, etc... pehle lalkare nal is still popular song on DJ's and as Babbu maan said "chori chori jatti chamkila sunn di" , that is true as when i was in hostel we use to listen his corrupt songs too.
Imtiaz's utilisation of actors in a syrupy concoction of colors, of music, of nuanced dialogue and complicated characters is top notch and in primal form. Chamkila chamak gaya phir se. Very beautifully reviewed Sucharita.

Wonderfully nuanced reviewed. Only thing to add is that bored look of parineeti as amarjyot is often how people on the stage looked until show theatrics came into play. Also, it’s a way for the woman to disengage with the lyrics and not participate in the environment of the song.

Sucharita ji, I agree it's individual choice what they want to listen or read but he was not a legend, hero or even an artist just celebrate by one particular section of society. I can't understand that women of that era enjoyed his songs and their fantasies but surely the current generation women describe this sexual abuse which everyone knows in 60% cases it's someone from family. Chamkila songs majorly fantasies relationship with father in law, bhabhi, jeeja and saali. May be those women happily agreed this " ghar ki izzat ghar me rahegi" and so many singers described women's beauty but chamkila version was too low but anyway its choice....chamkila, mastram, ullu...Just ignore Hindustani shastriya sangeet,sufi...only chamkila mastram can deliver real entertainment.
The double standard is shocking here.Had this film been directed by Vanga the review tome would have been otherwise.Promoting Ashleel songs would be the repeated tune, but since its by Imtiaz Ali and rendered by the talented Diljith , the tone from the reviewer is pleasant😂 I loved the movie btw😍

The highlighter is highlighting. BTW Great review as always!
when bollywood critics dont understand what a muscical means😅😅😅
Sounds like he took the song chali kahaani and brought that whimsy to storytelling
The double standard is shocking here.Had this film been directed by Vanga the review tome would have been otherwise.Promoting Ashleel songs would be the repeated tune, but since its by Imtiaz Ali and rendered by the talented Diljith , the tone from the reviewer is pleasant😂
I loved the movie btw😍
Amazing review !
