      not everyone feels like "they" is the right fit for them - the fun thing about pronouns is that even if something is just "fine", it can be nice to break out and use the pronouns that make you happy and represent you a a person! Some non binary people use he or she pronouns, some binary people use they/them, and anyone can use any pronouns they feel best represent their own identity! It's a cool tool for self expression!

    this is why i love my native language (filipino). we don't have pronouns based on gender, we just use one set of pronouns "siya/niya" :-) even for most words, we don't really have differences (for example, son/daughter have no counterpart each, we just say "anak"=child, or sister/brother is just "kapatid"=sibling. we do have specific terms for older brother/sister tho [kuya/ate respectively])

    • @MrJ3ly
      @MrJ3ly 4 года назад +6

    • @indecisive.325
      @indecisive.325 4 года назад +13

      I noticed that about Tagalog/Filipino and I thought it was cool that pronouns weren't gendered. The only confusing thing is when native Filipino speakers also learn English. My mother would constantly use the wrong pronoun for our cat, sometimes switching mid-sentence. And at Filipino gatherings the wrong English pronouns fly around like crazy. Me and the other 1st-generation Americans get misgendered and mixed up all the time, but it's no big deal.

      @milkmandan77 Believe me, it won't...
      At the very least, they will NEVER force people to call someone something as absurd as "Ze"/"Hir"/"Zir"/"or any other made up Word, sorry I meant Made up 'Pronouns' "
      And if does go through, I, like a LOT of People will not Follow that Stupid "Law". I don't care what/how you Identify, and it shouldn't matter either! Were all humans beings and we have to respect one another, but Making up BS Pronouns and try to Force them down People's Throats is no way to get yourself recognized as a Separate Gender...
      In closing, I just want to remind everyone that all this Movement is doing is Harming the way people see Transgender People!
      I have nothing against anyone, as long as they don't want to push their agenda onto me, or force me to behave a certain way, or make a Huge Deal out of "Using the 'Correct' Pronoun", but "Correct" is YOUR definition...the Majority of People would never say that using Made Up Pronouns is "Correct"...
      People don't become "Incorrect" just because they don't agree with you! That's not the way the world works...
      Just like the Anti Fat Shaming Movement who basically try to force Everyone to Change their Preferences to Include Fat, Obese and even sometimes Morbidly Obese people that don't do anything to help their situation...
      Just like Anti-Fa and the other ridiculous movement from the (Extreme) Right trying to Shove their "Correctness" down our Throat, whether or not we agree!
      First- "If a law is unjust, a man is not only right to disobey it, he is obligated to do so." -Thomas Jefferson
      and
      Second- "You can catch more Flies with Honey than with Vinegar" - Unknown (Though I prefer the Alternative Proverb: "You can catch more Bees with Honey than with Vinegar", it's actually True, since Flies, Fruit Flies anyways, are also attracted to Vinegar, maybe more so than to Honey...for Once and I think it also illustrates it's Meaning more Clearly without other More Confusing Negative Meanings associated with it...)
      P.S: If you do know who that Second Proverb is from, please let me know...

      @milkmandan77 Yeah but Jordan Peterson is one of few if not the only one who says that Bill C-16 would actually give this amount of power and latitude. Most others have mentioned that this would only be applied when there is ACTUAL Hate Speech and using the "Wrong" Pronoun for someone, no matter the race, sex or gender, does not nor will it ever fall under "Hate Speech".
      I guess you could say that the person who refuses to use such Pronouns could be labeled as "Not Pro-Gender Pronouns Use" but I fail to see how refusing to use certain words, and even some that aren't even words, but entirely made up "Pronouns"...how would this be construed as "Hate Speech"?
      I really don't think that refusing to use certain words, as opposed to using certain words you shouldn't use like Racial Slurs/(Extreme) Sexist Remarks and things of the sort would be much more likely to fall under "Hate", but NOT using a word can't really be "Hate", at least not because someone has decided that they want to be called a certain way...
      (Ex: Would a Doctor be allowed to get you Fined or whatever the consequence for Not using the "Dr." prefix or even Refusing to Call Him/Her "Dr." entirely?)
      (No matter what you answered to the above Parenthesis, then that should clarify whether or not You think it should be a Constitutional Law or Not...or rather whether you think Jordan Peterson still has a valid point or not...)
      BTW: Isn't nice to have a pleasant Conversation even if our points of view aren't exactly the same?
      Cheers to those few Quality Convos!
      P.S: In case this is coming from Steven Crowder's videos...as much as I like him and respect his opinions on Politics and serious Divisive Issues in the United States, as someone living presently in Canada, Montreal to be exact, where he also comes from...but somehow, this seems to make him biased because he tends to no use a real Journalistic Reporting Style when doing anything about Canada...
      What I mean is that instead of having a Question, going to the right place to get these answers, finding said answers and then making his report. He seems to be going off his past experiences (he left at 18 and is born in 87...so a LONG Time AGO...) and making a report based on that while doing anything to arrive to that conclusion...He's not asking a question and trying to find an answer. He already has the answer he wants to present and just goes at it all wrong to prove his false claim...which is based on very old experiences/memories...

It's the made up nonsense words that myself and many others draw the line at. I have yet to find anyone that can actually explain what the individual made up pronouns mean. All they do is cause confusion and make conversation that refers to someone who uses said pronouns way more difficult than it needs to be. You can pretend like it doesnt, but it does. If your well-being hinges on someone referring to you by the correct pronoun then you have more serious problems to deal with, and especially if you're self-centered enough to want to use your own unique made up pronoun.

    Gender neutral pronouns (they/their) were constructed and are generally only in use for the sole purpose of mentioning an item that you do not know the owner of or a group of people/items. They are not meant for someone to use for himself/herself. And also if someone wanted to call me she/her I personally would not give a shit because I know who I am and their(used in the context that I do not know if it’s a male or female that would be doing this to me) words do not define who I am. If you allow anyone else’s words or opinions to control you or upset you because they were “wrong” then you only give that person power over you and you will lose every time. Knowing who you are personally is more important than others getting your “preferred pronoun” correct. If you don’t know who you are, then that is the big issue here. Focus on that before you try to police others into following whatever rule you set in place.

      @@NatureLover-pj2qe I have had a large change of perspective since that comment was originally made. I have learned a great deal more and do see things differently now. But I still hold the belief that no matter what you refer (he, she, they, them, etc.) the more you give someone else power to upset you by being hurt or offended when they say your non preferred pronoun, the weaker you make yourself. If you use they/them or any other specifics, then the only people you should care about offending you at the ones you personally choose to acquaint yourself with on the regular. But being offended by a stranger you do not know using the wrong pronoun only gives them power over you and makes you weaker. That will still be my stance for the rest of my life because as I taught my ex (who is trans ftm) what you know yourself to be is more important than what some asshole who doesn’t know you thinks.

    Seem to me that we all have to walk on eggshells, even asking someone's pronouns is apparently making them feel "the odd one out".
    People don't have to call someone by their preferred pronouns, it is well within someone's right to disagree or question someone's actions regardless. I dont't have to call someone they/them or zey/zir or whatever especially if their attitude is denouncing someone as transphobic or asking questions or having different opinions.
    Basically this is just another case of a large group of people with the "you're either with us or against us" mindset. Taking away freedom of speech doesn't solve the problem, its like putting newspaper over a puddle of piss and saying its clean. Freedom of speech brought LGBT into acceptance because it allowed people to question obscene views and standards over things which weren't harming anyone.

This world is becoming a place where everyone has to tiptoe around everyone else. I could identify and dress as a tiger and insist on using the pronoun 'meow' - on this basis, that's my right - but expecting everyone to accommodate that fantasy is not very realistic and it wouldn't be reasonable for me to take offense when people don't, even if I'm clearly wearing my tiger onesy. The way people are called these days is what's ruining America. It's dumb to get mad at someone for calling a man a man just because the person who called them a man had no idea they offended a person that was a man but didn't associate as a man. Let's just accept a person for who they are and drop all these stupid labels that are making each of us argue with each other for saying a word they had no idea the person didn't want to be called. I'm all for respecting people's choices of pronouns, the only thing that bugs me about they/them/their, specifically, as pronouns is when they're used in place of "he/she" (for example), because then you end up with incorrect grammar like "they is" which just sounds all kinds of wrong, grammatically speaking. If they want to use they/them/their, that's fine! I'd just really appreciate sticking with proper grammar, that's all. "They are" *can still* refer to one individual, after all; there's no reason to rewrite grammar rules when the desired case is already covered! Unfortunately this specific point is never mentioned in *many* explanations across the Internet such as that in this video.
    Again, I'm happy to use any pronouns people choose for themselves, it's just when it violates grammar that I feel like I have to just "grin and bare it", and put up with it. This is as opposed to accepting happily, wholeheartedly and unconditionally, which I otherwise have done.

    Answer me this. If pronouns don't reflect gender, then why would a woman change their pronouns from she/her to he/him if there's no meaning in it? Like come on that's just taking it too far

    So, if I am in the room and someone is talking to me, I prefer you, you, your, yours. What they call me when they called when not addressing me, is actually their business. As my grandmother used to say, call me anything you like except late for dinner.

      Nope. We need he/him, she/her and they/them. Just because you don’t think other genders exist doesn’t mean their not there. You can choose to stay ignorant or educate yourself on lgbtq+

      Lexie Tibbs wtf. Literally lgbtq+ does have science to back it up. A lot actually, have you done any research at all. Now we can pretend their isn’t any science for a second but it wouldn’t matter because human rights come first. Why shouldn’t people be able to love who they want without getting harassed, murdered, beat, and bullied. Why is it so hard for you to let people live their lives and be happy. Please name one person or thing that they are hurting by living their lives. Also please stop ignoring the fact that intersex and multiple other types of sex’s exist. It’s not just male and female. Gender is a social construct not science.

      Why should you have to? Gender is biological, and its importance in speech primarily a social contruct. If someone who is biologically female is therefore always called "she", so what! If a female then feel they have attributes that do not align with many/most other females so what! Calling them "he" instead of "she" is going to "fix" or achieve what exactly? The issue is entirely in people's minds and ultimately their assumptions and choice to be offended.
      All these pronouns are little more than the ever growing lengths (a minority of) people are going to, to be privileged and in truth just outraged over nothing of any true importance.
      IMHO

      @@NFawc in your example not calling them he and calling them she on purpose can be so demoralizing to a trans person that if you do it enough they may kill themselves and that blood is on no one's hands but your's if you purposefully misgender a trans person you may make them very depressed that's why you shouldn't misgender people and correct yourself when you're wrong

      @@truetransoul586 Understood, BUT, if we're going to be governed by people unable to deal with "hurty feelings", where will that take us? Maybe people need to learn to better deal with issues (eg:gender dysphoria) rather than expecting the world to revolve around them? I have no issue calling someone by any name they wish to go by. But lying about scientific facts for hurty feelings? No... Dangerous and counter productive.

      @@NFawc There are scientific studies that prove that being transgender is more than 'I'm a boy and like pink & barbies'. According to those studies it has to do with how the brains of transgendered people are structured. It is disrespectful to call someone by the wrong pronounces but if you genuinely don't know them and just assume them because of how someone looks it shouldn't be a problem (in my opinion) as long as when someone tells you their pronounces you try to use them. It's understandable if you refuse to use ze/zir and stuff like that because those are foreign words but when it comes to he/him, she/her & they/them you should at least try to use the right ones.
