    Last year we featured the 2019 Volvo XC90 but with the T6 motor and at the Momentum trim. This year we're looking at the top-trim Inscription with Volvo's Twin Engine eAWD system found in the T8. This mid-size three row luxury crossover comes in onyx black paint, has the premium package, Bowers & Wilkins audio system, and upgraded rims.
    Our full tour and review of the 2019 Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription goes over what's optioned on this vehicle, along with the other available options and packages. We also discuss the changes coming with the 2020 Volvo XC90, a very mild facelift which adds approximately 10% battery capacity and some exterior design changes.
    Our Spotlight then covers a comprehensive driving test of the XC90 in the winter, including how this vehicle's hybrid system works and real-world fuel economy along with performance testing.

    Really good looking SUV. Perfectly captures what a Volvo should look like inside and out, maybe my favorite interior. I wish Volvo would develop a straight six for its bigger vehicles. This overly complex setup for engine scares me from owning this without warranty.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 года назад

      I love the interior of it also, if they could re-work their Sensus system I'd be even happier. Unfortunately I don't think we'll be seeing larger engines from Volvo, they're working towards a full-EV lineup in the near future.

    I find that when living in Québec that parking in my unheated garage the car never felt crazy cold when starting it up on a cold winter morning.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 года назад

      That's good at least, I found it was a bit nippy with this on some mornings, and the heat tool a little while to kick in like it did with the XC60 T8 we did last year. We also can't heat the garage we park the EVs in, our little ceiling heater started sparking when I went to start it up during the week we had this.

    This car is insanely expensive. While it may be more fuel efficient, you will never recoup savings in gas almost regardless of the price of gas

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 года назад

      Unless you never use the ICE system you'll basically never recover the costs. Our cost analysis at the end was pretty rough, plus we left out the cost of charging, and it was already looking impossible.

    • @ivanlowjones
      @ivanlowjones 4 года назад

      The same can be said for nearly all luxury hybrid vehicles unless you're receiving huge government tax incentives that significantly offset the sticker price.

    • @Tonyx.yt.
      @Tonyx.yt. 4 года назад

      considering 20k overprice for plug in system, you need to drive 100% electric 840000km just for spend 20k on electricity, of course for that time battery must be charged nearly 30k times so in fact beign completly dead since long ago because a lithium battery can last (of course with heavy performance loosing) around 1000 times.

      Not as much engine sound as I remember from the S90 we did last year, but I also tried to keep it in EV mode as often as possible. Very quiet on the inside!

    Use VOC app on your cell phone to activate the climate preconditioning.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 года назад

      That's something we'd love to be able to test, but often can't. These new smartphone apps usually require the user create a profile and register the VIN with the system using the same name/address the vehicle is registered to. So far BMW has been the only manufacturer to provide login details for their apps, but aside from two cars this year the apps never work. Volvo hasn't bothered with this on the press fleet as of yet.

  • @klausnielsen7102
    @klausnielsen7102 4 года назад +1

    I went with the Excellence that has absolutely every option available plus a number unique for this trim. I am still considering a 745Le to get the last in refinement !? No problem with pre condition over the Volvo app.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 года назад

      The Volvo on Call app seems to be the way to get preconditioning to work, unfortunately Volvo Canada doesn't activate it for us to test out on these press models. I'd love to drive the BMW 745Le, we missed our chance to try the 530e earlier in 2019.

    Volvo is in a very interesting spot. Now that governments around the globe are making laws requiring certain safety standards that volvo pioneered, so now they have to innovate in other ways. Now they are using their new Chinese parent to fund hard pushing into electrification.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 года назад

      It's a great point, in fact CNBC just published a video on their channel about the same thing last week. Luxury manufacturers have enhanced safety as a selling point, but it's much easier to replicate that technology today than it was 20 years ago. I think that's part of the reason why Volvo is pushing EV heavily now, they want to be Tesla for electric, but Volvo for safety.

    So basically it's better to buy a plug-in hybrid 7 seat aviator/ navigator?

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 года назад

      Base price for the BMW 745Le is pretty close to a base 750i, and in that case the PHEV 7 Series might make more sense. Ultimately it comes down to financial sense, PHEV/EVs make ya feel good buy the reality is they aren't necessarily more 'green' given our current infrastructure and market.

    I have a XC90 T8 and didn’t have any problem to precondition the car while plug-in.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 года назад

      Was that via a schedule/Volvo on Call, or just turning on the heating system while you’re already in the car and it’s plugged in?

      PRN_TestDrive I am using the ‘Volvo on call’ app on the phone and start the parking climate.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 года назад

      We've heard from a couple other commenters that the VoC app is a must in order for this to work. Unfortunately for us we're unable to test these systems since they're usually not activated for the press fleet.

    • @10tenman10
      @10tenman10 4 года назад

      The Volvo is massively overpriced. The BMW is unreliable. In this general category I think the upper end Highlander Hybrid (about $46,000) is a car that could compare in this class.

      Xc90 inscription T6 (a cheaper model than tested here) $68,945 (today, where I live) vs posted $46,600 for the 2020 Highlander Limited Hybrid. Agree that the Volvo is nicer but not over $22K (more, actually) nicer.
