Dr.முத்துலட்சுமி ரெட்டி இது கதையல்ல வரலாறு... Muthulakshmi was born in the year 1886 at Tirukokarnam in Pudukottai state as the eldest daughter of Narayanasamy and Chandrammal. His father Narayanasamy is a famous lawyer. He belonged to the Brahmin community. Mother Chandrammal is a famous singer. Musician belongs to community. His younger sisters are Sundarammal, Nallamuthu and his younger brother Ramaiah.
The time when Muthulakshmi was born and grew up was a time when women could only be seen inside the house. If you cross the steps of the house, there will be only men on the other side. Muthulakshmi's father was a strong supporter of her desire to break through and start school at the age of 4, finish her schooling, and go to college, during a time when education for girls was a no-brainer. There were no hostel facilities for women in outlying colleges and there was a restriction on admitting women in local colleges.
In this context he applied on 4.2.1904 to join King's College, Pudukottai. Some conservatives among the officials in the then republican regime strongly opposed this. However, the then King Marthanda Bhairavath Thondaiman, who had great interest in female education and progressive thinking, overruled the objections and allowed Muthulakshmi to study in the college.
After joining the college, his education was interrupted due to ill health for some time. Also, his mother Chandrammal succumbed to illness. Experiencing the disease and its cruelties firsthand gave him the zeal to become a doctor.
Following this, Muthulakshmi became the first woman in the country to join the Madras Medical College in 1907. Chennai Medical College was full of men. The women present would also be European. In those days, girls who were going to study would stand on the street and be teased. When he comes to class from home, he comes in a curtained vehicle. The college professor, Colonel Zipford, never lets the students sit in his class. It was only after Muthulakshmi got full marks in surgery that she changed her mind that women could come and sit in her class. When Muthulakshmi received her medical degree, Colonel Zipford wrote, 'It was a golden day in the history of the Chennai Medical College.' There was no female doctor in Egmore Hospital till then. Muthulakshmi entered as the first woman doctor. In 1912, she became the first woman doctor in Tamil Nadu.
