      G’day Phil! It’s always good having Matt on the boat. To be completely honest he isn’t as die hard as dad and myself when it comes to fishing, but he still loves it and always manages to somehow land the biggest fish or something and always gives us a laugh 😂🙌
      I’ve definitely heard of them being caught on pillies before but I can never seem to hook them when snapper fishing or anything! Maybe one day I’ll fluke one as well 😂 as you’d know, they go hard hey!!
      We find by bleeding them well and skinning them it helps, but even then I know what you mean about the strong taste in the flesh. Lately we’ve been cooking them in Thai curry and it is actually delicious and fully takes away any stronger flavours. Usually I just like eating the fish without stuffing it up with too many other ingredients, but the Jew are seriously nice in the curry, the flavours infuse into the flesh. I’ll send you the recipe on Facebook if you’re interested, it is also great for mackerel if you feel like changing things up a bit.

      They are definitely not an easy fish to catch at times, but the bonus of places like the Gold Coast, Moreton Bay, and port of Brisbane is you can catch them only minutes from the boat ramp. G’day mate, thank you!! The water was pretty clean this day, and it happened to be a run in tide but I’d suggest to just go fishing whenever you can, we have caught them on pretty much all tides to be completely honest. People catch them on the high, low, run in, run out. Morning, afternoon, midday. One thing I’d do though is if you catch one or see someone else catch one, note down all the conditions and try to find any patterns you can.
      Hope this helps mate, good luck! 🙌🎣

    • @willkitching
      @willkitching Год назад +1

      Hi John, thanks so much mate! The hooks I’ve used are Mustad ‘Hoodlums’ which work well, but lately I’ve also been using Mustad ‘Big Guns’ as they come in a bulk packet and it saves some money. They both work!
      I use 5/0 or 6/0 which seems to be okay, but don’t be afraid to use 7/0. They have a big mouth, and I know people that use 7/0 hooks and they do well.
      I just like to use around 5/0 or 6/0 as they are a good size to suit the yakkas, pike, and slimy mackerel that we use as livies. If I was fishing for bigger Jew out on the reef, I’d use at least a 6/0 or 7/0 👍🎣
      Hope this helps mate

    Hey Will. What tide is best for this? Every time I hit the seaway the tide in or out seems to play havoc… any tips appreciated!!

    • @willkitching
      @willkitching Год назад

      Hey Rhett Dog, I hope you’re doing well mate!
      Yeah I definitely know what you mean, the current in the seaway absolutely rips through there that’s for sure. I just find around the tide changes you get a lot of bream and stuff picking your live baits apart, but as the tide picks up they bugger off.
      The key is to try and keep your line as vertical as possible, straight up and down under the boat. This helps avoid snags but also keeps your bait closer to the bottom, if your line has an angle it can wash up off the bottom.
      We use a size 6 ball sinker (I think it’s around 62 grams).
      You want to keep your bait as close to the bottom as possible, hover it just above the rocks, and lift your rod to try and bounce it over any snags. The sad thing is, every now and again it’s just a fact that you’re going to get a snag in this spot. The closer you go into the rockwall, the more snags you’ll get so stay out just a little bit.
      We leave the motor running firstly for safety around the rocks, but also in case we have to manoeuvre the boat to keep our line straight up and down.
      I hope these tips help mate and you can get into a few! Just watch the pressure waves on the run out tide, and southerly breeze will push you towards the rocks so I’ve found a northerly is best.
      Tight lines and come say g’day if you see us around the Gold Coast in the next few weeks! I’m staying down here on holidays 🤙🎣
