  • “What I’m most afraid of is…forgetting Anna. The strange lessons we have everyday… are making my memories fade. Please, don’t make me forget Anna. It’s only Anna and me in this whole world. Just give me that - please. Please.” - Johan Liebert”
It's been a while. Can't believe I am back with a FULL video. It's honestly all thanks to my twin brother, who begged me to watch this series. I finally caved and finished it on our birthday. Let me just say, I was absolutely emotional and destroyed by how beautiful, tragic and human this show was.
Anyways, this video is supposed to represent what I thought Johan's intentions/feelings were. I believe he mainly did everything for Anna. I will write a post detailing why in the comments. When I heard this song I immediately thought of them.
Johann's guilt about Anna being taken away by the Monster when they were kids really brought out the "monster" in him. & Anna learning she should have forgiven him at the end; These are the key points I was trying to convey in this video. I think I did a wonderful job making a full 3 minute video for them despite their lack of footage together.
I hope you all enjoy. There will be more Monster amvs to come!
    INFO:
    Footage: Monster
    Song: Running up that Hill
    Artist: Placebo
Dedication: Leovoid - my twin brother, thank you for showing this series to me. I am glad we watched it together as I will treasure our experience of the series forever. I've NEVER found a sibling relationship that really resonated with us until I stumbled upon Johan/Anna and I am glad you feel the same exact way about them in regards to us. My first monster amv will go to you, as I am sure many more will in the future. Love you forever!

"Tell me we both matter". I saw what you did there... Ah, My heart! I'm not lying when I say I stopped breathing in the last episode when he recalls being abandoned by his mother, a thought that consumed his mind in the form of "did she choose me, did she choose her? and either way, WHY did she CHOOSE!?" Sorry I have no strength to write a more detailed comment as I usually do. Your art will always amaze me, and you really pay tribute to Urasawa's masterpiece. To know there are human beings like you both in this world, that understand that reality destroys us and only art, freedom, and imagination can save us, is perhaps what keeps me here. Again, thank you for helping me inmerse in this world once more. Whether it's fiction or not, the emotions and reflections it conveys are real, or at least feel that way. I wish I could escape reality watching your AMV's all day and rejoice, with tears of joy, with such a story, that has me hooked since I watched it and I honestly can't get over Monster (I literally can't read any other manga or watch any series/manga because I feel like I haven't reflected on Monster enough). Again... how can such sad and obscure emoetions give us so much passion and euphoria. Wonderful as always, your dear friend, S.C!

My heart hurts so much for Johan, I hope I can give him a very warm and thight hug for all the psychological trauma he went through since his childhood. The loneliness and sadness must be the huge influence of how easily Poppe’s storybook that birth a monster out of him that further enhanced by Anna’s gory experience. Or at least I hope Tenma holds his hand during the ending and gives him strenght after saying his real name. They truly care for each other despite everything that has happened

So here I am after you recommended that anime to me and I want to thank you so much for that! While it felt longwinded once in a while, I had a lot of fun! Just like you I was most curious about the twins and I wished we saw more. By the end of the last episode (which I watched only minutes ago) I was at the edge of my seat with so many questions! Why was only Anna taken? Did their mother just leave Johan behind? Did their mother flee with "the monster" bc he fell in love with her? How? She was basically his prisoner, why would she love him?
Really wish the anime would've spanned one or two more episodes longer simply because I want to know so much more! This video really helped though - Anna and Johan are super interesting and I agree with you; Anna was Johan's main reason for everything. The two of them remind me a bit about the twins from Pandora Hearts now that I think about it!
So thank you once again, I'm hoping for more videos from you!

OMG YOU FINISHED IT I AM SO PROUD AND HAPPY AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
      *Ahem*
So a lot of these questions is answered in the novel sequel called Another Monster. But it only came out in Japan. I read it. Its written in the form of a case file so its sooo hard to understand.
However, I wrote down a deep analysis on Johan's intentions (and im actually working on another one right now cause I had a revelation)
      www.tumblr.com/blog/view/xprincessgarnetxvi/674938274201157632
(I also wrote a one shot story that gives us the closure with the twins. If you are interested in that I can link you!!!)
      ANYWAYS to answer your questions:
When Anna was in the room with the portraits and she was taken by memory and was like "I'm sorry, cause you two will have to survive on your own." that was their mother returning to them after being kidnapped...to abandon them once again. Johan was crying over their mother leaving and Anna was like "WHY ARE YOU CRYING?"
and then you realize in that scene that the night Anna shot him, Johan was actually crying.
The mother is the monster to me along with Boneparte. The fact she chose at all was what hurt Johan.
and Johan took the guilt he felt for letting Anna get hurt and became a monster...
I am now entertaining a new theory that Johan NEVER mixed up his memories...and KNEW he wasnt the one who went to the Red Rose Mansion.
HIS ENTIRE GOAL was to make sure Anna NEVER remembered about her horrific experience. Another monster also specifies CLEARLY that Johan loved Anna above ALL ELSE.
Also when Johan was left alone, he nearly died in a fire he started trying to cook himself something to eat. Only one twin was taken because Boneparte only needed one to become the monster he needed...and the real monster...was Anna all along.

@@xPrincessGarnetXVI Damn, that mother really deserved an award. What a horrible person!
I actually figured that Anna was supposed to be their created "monster" and figured that would be the huge twist at the end. Johan actually acting like it was him all along to protect his sister actually makes a ton of sense! I will now declare it canon for myself!

@@Kahnah23 Yeah people defend their mother but...as a mother of two...I would NEVER make a choice on which one of my children would be tortured and dehumanized. Boneparte was always a pos...but the mother was someone the children trusted with their lives and she betrayed them. Despicable.

    READ FULL ESSAY HERE: www.reddit.com/r/MonsterAnime/comments/ttihlh/everything_johan_did_was_for_anna_a_monster/
*Everything Johann did was for Anna.
    A “Monster” capable of love.*
I was very confused about the complexities of Johan's character up until the last handful of episodes. It became very clear to me that Johan was hurting the entire time. Everything he did, even though he was wrong, was for Anna.
In his own twisted way and view on things, he was protecting her. He killed every "parental" figure they had because he was betrayed by every adult figure in his life so far. People who mentioned calling the police, ended up finding out about their past - anything that would eventually lead to the man Johann referred to as “The Monster” finding them.
The adults in their lives thus far would betray them, torture them, hurt them, throw them away- and forcefully separate them. So he’d kill in order to runaway from "the monster" and protect Anna. Then when Anna found out about the blood on his hands that fateful night, he realized he was now also one of the people who hurt her and wanted to die.
In that moment, I think we should focus on the body language and expressions. Johan faced the ground. hardly picking up his eyes. His shoulders were sunken and he did not have that menacing little smile he usually had. He could hardly look Anna in the eyes.
He asked her to shoot him and run - in an attempt to finally liberate her from the horrific life they had to lead up until now - probably blaming his existence for the constant chase their predator gave way to them as prey. To Johan, him living was a danger to Anna and that night made it evident to him. But when he was brought back to life and realized the gravity behind his methods, seeing how terrified Anna was of him - he started to cry. Because despite his initial feelings of finding his death absolutely necessary for her to be safe, he still wanted what he had with her; the only bond of love he ever knew.
Why else would he show remorse and hurt after killing their foster parents and mentally scarring Anna by his own hand?
I want to GREATLY EMPHASIZE the important factor I missed my first time watching the scenes with Johan/Anna - the scenes shown to us were through her recollection were only fragments. They were told from what she COULD remember, so her take on what really happened that rainy night the first few times the events are unfolded before us should not be taken as absolute. At least...up until it is revealed in the final episodes that Anna realized that on that night instead of seeming like an empty shell of a person asking for death, Johan was instead crying and crying before she shot him.
The scene where Anna finds the portraits reveals what truly happened between them that night. She said *“Johan was crying “here” just like before.”* She was mimicking a memory she had just recalled in its entirety. *“Why are you crying, why are you crying?”* She sounded in distress. It had to be Johan crying when she was about to shoot him or maybe even before after he killed their foster parents out of the fear of the Monster, right? Directly after she reveals that she remembers him crying, it shows the image of him pointing at his head that rainy night so I don’t think that reference could be argued...even though I’ve seen some do so.
I believe that, finally being able to remember that day finally revealed to her that Johann wasn’t the “face of absolute evil” she initially dismissed him to be; he was a boy/man who could cry and mourn - he was human. and instead of showing him forgiveness/love - she added on to his collection of wounds scarred upon his soul from everyone else who chose to harm him. Tenma...was ultimately the ONLY one in his life who showed him kindness.
Throughout the series you see that he is trying to wipe everyone who knew of what happened to Anna off the face of the earth, that included himself. He did not want Anna to remember. So when it was revealed she did remember, he mourned. It was subtle but evident in the anime when she reveals “you are wrong.” something in him shifted - for once he was reacting to the words of another. She said "he had a smile but seemed like he was crying. I never seen such an expression on his face before." and then Johan goes on to commit the "perfect suicide." He was ready to die but you can see his conviction began to slip away when Anna forgave him and also in how Tenma was still hesitating on killing him ruthlessly like he always presumed would happen.
Johan in his final moments was cracking and finally falling apart. You see it in the final expression he makes: the distraught, confusion and sadness. Johan has never shown to take any kind of sick satisfaction from killing unlike all the other serial killers shown being interviewed. The writer highlights this in the show. Especially contrasting Johann with Roberto, specifically, when Roberto tries to kill Anna.
Despite his callousness and his lack of care for life - Johan, despite how much of a "monster" he was, very clearly had humanity and had love....for his sister most of all. Johann knew when his mother chose, that Anna was “the unwanted child.” That is why after she got back from the Red Rose Mansion, he cried for her story. It should have been him that suffered. Then after, he treats her with the upmost care, telling her everything is hers, no matter what she will win everything because he would deem it so. Because she deserved everything in the world to contrast their mother throwing her away. He wanted her to know she was loved.
There is a reason why the author chose the words *“precious sister”* whenever others described Anna in regards to Johann. If she meant nothing to him, how did everyone else conjure up this concept that Anna was important to him, despite also saying with that very same breath he was the Devil himself?
*It’s contradicting. It’s also beautifully tragic.*
I wrote this because I was astounded to see some posts implying that Johann did things to torture Anna. Telling her to shoot him was his first act of in an attempt to drive her insane? They twisted a lot of things Johan did to try and make this statement true. But I cannot comprehend how they drew this conclusion? Johann cried when he awoke at the hospital after he reached for his sister and she screamed in fear of him. His face full of tears. If his intention was to drive Anna insane, he would have triumphed in that moment she screamed and fell to the ground after he reached out to her. Anna has mentioned several times that Johann has cried for her, like when he was in the room full of their happy portraits, he was crying. He never once tried to bring harm to Anna - not intentionally towards her person. He never killed without reason. If he wanted to torment her, he would have shown her the dead bodies of the couple he murdered out on the field instead of leading Anna away with a game.
They imply that Johan wanted to torture her and then kill her at the end. But that makes absolutely no sense. Where in the storyline does Johann give off this tendency towards her? Even at the end he told her where to meet him and not once did he try to shoot her or Tenma. Honestly, if he really wanted to provoke Tenma to shoot him, he would have held the gun to Anna instead of a random child. But even despite that being his greatest endeavor, he refused to point the gun at someone who was important to Tenma...because Anna, is important to Johan too.
To say Johann, despite being hailed as the Monster of the series, had no love or humanity in him and was merely the Devil himself...completely missed the point of the story...
p.s. I’d like to point out the constant mentioning of Hitler in this story and draw another important factor...Hitler brainwashed people to commit mass genocide. Under his rule, millions perished in horrific ways. But despite that...Hitler was capable of loving others. Hitler was also loved by others. The terrifying truth about people who commit atrocities...is that they are not monsters or demons or devils...
    *they are merely human.*

@@RandomGuy-ll9uz Hey there my friend! I've updated that essay...on the original post which you can find here:
      www.reddit.com/r/MonsterAnime/comments/ttihlh/everything_johan_did_was_for_anna_a_monster/
I am relieved you see things as I do. I actually had another revelation about Johan's intentions that surrounds the concept that...Johan NEVER believed he was the one who went to the Red Rose Mansion. His goal was to make sure Anna never remembered so he was trying to erase everyone who knew, INCLUDING his entire existence.
I will write an essay on that one later.
But if you've read another Monster, that confusing conversation Anna has in the room with portraits is a little bit understandable.
The person going "im sorry, you two will have to survive on your own" is literally their mother returning to them AFTER being kidnapped and abandoning them.
"WHY ARE YOU CRYING?" is Anna asking Johan why he was crying when their mother left. Johan was crying and I think that is when they ran for the border and Johan was never the same again.

I know this has nothing to do with monster but i know no one is going to say this heh. I really understood Johan and Anna Dynamics more fast because of a comic story of Undertale I really liked, it's called handplates. It's about two skeleton brothers that just like the twins are experiments, the story is about them trying to survive the tests and experiments and trying to keep each other safe and happy during this time. Eventually they escape the lab and try to live a normal life the best they can, but they are tormented with memory loss and traumas of the past. I really like spotting the similarities between monster and Handplates, makes it more fun. What i read about Johan wanting to make Anna happy and saying the world is hers, reminded me of a scene in Handplates where Sans (the older brother) feels like Papyrus (younger brother) didnt have a happy life before they were rescued by the king (they dont remember their time in the lab), so he will try everything he can to make him happy. There are a lot more fun similarities if anyone reads
