    I didn't get it until you brought in Wolverine in the skeleton and skin/skin and bones analogy. Thank you for this. You provided some value in my life today.

    Beautiful video. Intelligent discussion of the philosophy of double bass amplification and various examples that illustrate our options quite well.
    The Noble really does seem like a one of a kind piece of gear.
    One question though.
    The final example, which you describe as the most accurate representation of your gig sound (a mic ten feet away(skin), normalized quieter than the DI sound (skeleton) coming out of speakers)
    Sounds great. If you’re ten feet away.
    At larger venues, or for every audience member that is not right up on the stage, the level of the natural acoustic bass sound will decrease to nothing, such that people in the back of the club are truly hearing just the Noble.
    Are you using a microphone as well at your gigs, to remedy this, or is this just the reality of amplifying an acoustic instrument in larger room?
    🙏

    Thanks for the review and for putting this comprehensive video together and your playing is wonderful. It seems like this preamp may have that organic sound without having to lug an all tube amp to gigs. I miss my B15 that I left behind in Ireland 30 years ago.

      Bill - my pleasure, and thanks! I think the Noble is the best of both worlds. It sounds so much better through the PJB Super Flightcase than it does through my monitors, too. Just makes the setup easy, and only three knobs to fiddle with.

      @@chrisfitzgerald8356 It would be great to find a remedy for a playing situation I sometimes find myself in. On Saturday night I played upright bass at a wedding connected directly to a Puma 500 amp and a Crazy 8 cab with tweeter. The acoustics in the big room were awful and all the guests of course talking and enjoying themselves. The notes were muddy and not well defined even with lots of bass and low mids rolled off. Didn't`t help having the (actually very good and sensitive) drummer asking me to turn up - should be the opposite! If anyone has any suggestions it would be great to hear them. Maybe the Noble would help with this and worth the investment.

      @@billmccormack682 One of the things I like about the Noble is that it has a switchable HPF set at 90hz. I always leave it on. Previously, I used a variable HPF velcroed on to the back of my amp, but the Noble frequency rolloff setting seems to take care of the same function. If you don't want to deal with the expense of the Noble, I highly recommend the FDeck HPFpre. I used it for many years and a HPF a must have for bass amplification. And it's only $100. :)

    Great video, thank you! Looking forward to hearing( hoping for it! )more pizzicato Bach stuff from you,too...BTW, Frode Berg is also doing a series of videos on YT about playing the solo cello suites; I mentioned your series to him in a comment there( on a different google account of mine ). Cheers👍🏽😁

      @@chrisfitzgerald8356 It's beautiful music, yes; both you and Mr. Berg have opened my ears with your insights into the use of slurs, pull-offs, and position shifts to make the pizzicato performances of that music more lyrical !

      @@markfoster_mkfbass Thanks for the heads up about Frode Berg's Bach series! I didn't know about that one. Interesting how he is playing them in cello range pizzicato. I don't think my heavy jazz setup would allow them to speak there, but he does a great job!

      @@chrisfitzgerald8356 I agree. Both of you put a lot of thought and care into interpreting the music; both of you employ hammer-ons and pull-offs. Looking forward to more posts from you, hopefully in the near future...

    Hi, enjoyed the video, thanks. On a gig which pickup do you use on your bass and which microphone for picking up the ‘presence’ . Be well, thanks again, Brian

    • @chrisfitzgerald8356
      @chrisfitzgerald8356  4 года назад +2

      Hi Brian - on a gig I use the Fishman Full Circle pickup always, and almost never use a mic unless there is a FOH system and the sound person wants to throw up a mic in front of the bass to mix with the direct signal. When they do that, it's usually an SM57 or something similar.

    Great video! I have a noble I didn't get the chance to use it live yet.
    I was also wondering, what's your philosophy about playing live with a bow? Do you have a preference when dealing with the volume difference of the bow and fingers? I personally use a reverb pedal (to add some acoustic feel since I'm usually playing direct only) with an eq to tame the ''razorblade sound'' of an amplified bow sound! That would make a great video! ;)

    • @chrisfitzgerald8356
      @chrisfitzgerald8356  4 года назад

      So sorry I missed this question! I am a very poor player with the bow, so i am probably not the best person to ask this question. In my experience, if i were switching back and forth and wanted to sound good doing it, i would have a separate channel for that where the levels and EQ were set to best produce that sound and switch channels whenever i switched techniques.

      I find that a small rubber mute on the bridge makes my arco playing sound a little quieter and forgiving without affecting my pizz sound if at all. I believe it's a tourte performance mute ($10). If I attempt an arco solo using the mute I am not afraid to dig in a little more and go for it.

    like always: the most inspiring and informative channel on the internet.
    In the corresponding Article in Bass Gear Mag you show a photo with HPF, Cali Comp and Noble. Is this your complete live setup? How do you use the comp?

    • @chrisfitzgerald8356
      @chrisfitzgerald8356  4 года назад +1

      Hi Uli - that photo was added by my editor, Tom Bowlus. I suspect that pedal chain is his for his electric rig. For me on the upright, the Noble with the HPF switch in the on position is all I use; straight into the FX return of a Phil Jones Super Flightcase 99.99% of the time. Thanks!

    great review...thank you very much..may I ask what kind of pickup you´re using? Cheers

    • @chrisfitzgerald8356
      @chrisfitzgerald8356  3 года назад

      Hi Frank - the pickup is a Fishman Full Circle, which is built into the adjuster wheel. I've been using this pickup for over 15 years now. Pickups are always a compromise, but I've made my peace with this one.

    ive been researching forever for someone to compare it as a DI for electric guitar but couldnt find anything.
    is it any good for electric guitar?

    • @chrisfitzgerald8356
      @chrisfitzgerald8356  3 года назад +1

      I haven't been a professional guitarist for decades, but i have used it for electric guitar at home and i think it sounds great! it will not produce overdrive under any circumstances, but as a clean channel it adds a nice dimensionality to the sound.

    Same concerns as I am often sacrificing my tone to fill the room with "bass" sound. My nice wood tone is lost to fulfill a certain bass requirement so I have use Acoustic Image amps to get a mono bass source out into the room and hopefully get that inspired mid-range out to the audience. I recently started using a Yamaha array system to project that mid-range out further...check out my review ruclips.net/video/N7p9WUSJxiU/видео.html
