Glad I just found this channel. I'm a huge The The fan, having seen them 6 times since 89. I'm also a huge Marr fan, having seen Johnny with The The, The Healers, The Cribs, Modes Mouse several times, and with his current band about 8 times. This record is a nice surprise, but my favorite is still Mind Bomb.
Probably the best album since Radiohead's OK Computer. I consider Dusk a rare perfect album... (like Abby road, Hunky Dory, Tapestry are from a-z) the more I listen to C.D. ... the more I think he's outdone it. Wrought from the crazing politically plandemic times... it's genius pop song writing.
Have all The The's early albums on LP (and CD) but missed Naked Self....then kept up with all his soundtrack work after subscribing to Matt's The The website....but didn't buy any, basically it isn't The The. Ensoulment LP arrived this week......looking forward to playing it.
Overall i like the music quite a lot but i feel like lyrically it's just really hamfisted, like even though i generally agree with some of the points he's making they're so unsubtly presented that it makes me cringe. 6/10 overall for me
Interesting. I find it quite economically written going for the most powerful ideas with the simplest verbiage. I think Matt has studied Hank Williams who is a master of this. To me that's the opposite of "ham fisted"
Matt Johnson is criminally underrated. He is a maestro indeed.
Agreed. This record is such a treat.
Saw the Band play in Manchester (UK) on Monday. It was amazing!! Cathartic! He’s on his way over to the states in the next few days
That’s awesome. Hope you enjoyed the hell out of that show.
One of the best lps of 2024
I agree. I can’t get enough of it.

This record is one of the better surprises this year. Thanks for checking out the channel.
Watching this prior to seeing four shows in the uk in the next two weeks
That’s excellent!! Enjoy yourself!

Damn, that’s a bold statement but we love those kind of opinions on this channel. Stoked to hear you’re enjoying it so much.
Saw him in concert last tuesday in Toronto...he played 27 tunes including the whole ensoulment lp
That’s fucking sick!!! Must have been so epic.

Right on! I agree with you about the soundtrack work. It’s brilliant but just doesn’t fall into that classic catalog.

Round it off to an 8.
I am biased though.
Heard that!
@@thebeatsessions8294 I work for Matt, it's a 8.5 for me. ;-)
@@testvideo44, that's incredible. He seems like an amazing dude!
Yeah, Morrisey doesn't suck.
He’s the weakest link of The Smiths. I’ll die on that mole hill
Morrissey sucks BIG TIME.

I can definitely see what you’re saying about the lack of lyrical subtlety. Music is superb though, as you pointed out.
One could say the same about the hamfisted politics that we all experienced that he is writing about in certain tracks.
