Everyone clearly just wants some consistency and to know where the line is. Abdo did admit that there is inconsistency but failed to explain the way forward to gain consistency in his view. There is no doubt that the game has changed to make player safety a higher priority. However, taking the physicality out of the game by penalising players for aggressively defending with acceptable technique and intent, which may lead to accidental injury, and which in itself represents an acceptable risk of the game itself creates doubt and confusion.
Imagine if I was the person in charge of looking after aviation and never had the job of being a pilot. That’s how it is in the nrl. You have people in charge who has never played the game or even touched a footy.
The Panthers were crap when Gus was there and as soon as they gave him the boot the club turned it around. The problem with Gus is he micromanages every club he's at and it never turns out well (ask Trent Barrett) so the last thing he should be doing is run anything within the NRL, heck he shouldn't even be allowed to run a chook raffle.
@mreel3488 that's an even stupider comment. Stop digging holes for yourself. Gus was never employed within a club to fix an issue immediately. He's employed to create long-term positive changes through pathway programs. That's why Penrith began tearing up the nrl in 2019, a few years after he was employed, and that's why the bulldogs will be better in a few years. I'm not sure why you ever thought that he was meant to fix issues immediately. 🤣
Seems like the match review guy isn’t really in touch with the game and it just feels like he’s putting on an inconsistent front because he can’t admit that he’s gotten it wrong. He’s not fit for the job.
You can compare a origin game to a club game how many penalties and 6 to go’s are given to a club team that is favoured by the refs it’s easy to decide who makes the top 8 with rules like that just keep giving the team that is favoured to win six to go the defending team runs out of gas.
Well said by Abdo. The old farts are looking very dated in their opinions and are holding the game back from growing. Gus being sushed at the end says it all.
You are just a keyboard worrior whose similar to Abdo cause you both have never played league in your life to understand what Gus and Smith are talking about. Your mentality and understanding of the game is going to turn rugby league into a netball competition.
Bruh its people like you that have got actual nrl players milking penalties now in almost every fricken tackle. Players dont just play now, they look for those penalties to get ahead instead of actually just fricken playing footy. Frustrates the ish out of me!
Yes, let’s alienate our traditional fan base to appease people who will never follow rugby league or allow their kids play it. That should to lead to growth.
OP you're right. Finucane was out of control. He had no idea where he was going to make contact with Crighton. All the moaning about being soft is from morons who can't tell the difference between a big hit and a shot to the head.
You guys are hypocrites, Fanecans tackle was completely reckless , head injuries happen when players act this way, you all talk about protecting players welfare but you're happy to see Kamakazi play when it suits you.
Listening to Patten waffle through the Asofa Solomona ruling highlighted everything that is wrong with the match review panel. Total lack of common sense
All contact sports are having to take precautions to protect players well-being now and their futures. Union has gone extremely cautious, AFL dragging their feet but NRL seems to have a good balance with physicality and protection. Inconsistency gives the panels something to debate and moan about.
I was a rugby league tragic went to games watched most games on tv as well, with the rule changes ,mrc, bunker, obstruction, etc i now don't even watch it on tv let alone go to a game. the new administrators have destroyed the game
Nrl has to come up with digital ruling like soccer. Too many forward passes that goes unnoticed. The electronic line must be ruled like soccer to come with accurate ruling by officials.
There should be penalties for obvious and deliberate milking, bring back integrity and honest intentions. It's not a good look and it taints the intended player.
Abdo sounds out of touch with the reality of the game. Its wrong to dismiss Gus & Cam (two intelligent blokes) who represent the common sense of the players and coaches.
It’s this kind of admin sooky lala that’s killing the game!!! Put in players contracts that they can’t sue for injury and are playing at own risk. Pretty simple
When I was growing up my mates and I would always talk about the big hits and the fights that broke out over the weekend. I don't particularly care about "miraculous" wing tries that always need to be looked at by big brother to determine whether there's a Higgs boson between the grass and the players body, that isn't interesting to me. Player safety in full contact sports should be very simple, if you don't want serious injuries and life affecting ailments after retirement I suggest you play a different game. I prefer watching my local competition over the NRL, less stress and strain on all involved.
@@canwelook I mean, he called for a suspension for NAS (twice), Brandon Smith and Josh king on his pod and 3 instances that he said should receive suspension didn't.

Abdo sounded really virtuous and has a broad and diverse selection of buzz words, I have a question for Andrew Abdo, why did the NRL abandon the Northern Territory Aborigines, in their greatest hour of need?
As knowledgeable Gus is, he still likes to sit behind a media desk and run his opinions across the set without repercussion. With his standing in the game, and where the game is at, why doesn’t he put his money where his mouth is and actually go work for the nrl to fix what he sees as broken 🤷♂️
So Gus wants to see more people get injured and be out for whole seasons or several weeks rather than ensuring a safe playing field where players can play week in week out? No wonder no one takes this bloke seriously anymore. He's literally saying to make footy harder like it was 20 years ago when that would mean more concussions, more broken bones, more head knocks... This guys a lunatic!
If people have been watching league for a 100 years I'd say they were mostly happy with the game was played and run, so why the constant tinkering by administrators? They dont play the game, the players do and this smacks of administrators making changes for changes sake just to justify their jobs. There were already rules, no spear tackles, no head highs, no feet first tackles (yes I've seen these) etc. The angling towards a litigation proof game is quite obvious to me and it's not why we all played.
Cancelled my season membership after 18 years. The refereeing and judicial system is just too inconsistent with too many howlers each week. Worst adjudicated sport in the world.
Abdo is wrong when he says it's not up to the players. Cam was right they know what risks are involved. League matches are at its best in origin cause players are aggressive towards eachother. The gagai and Burton fight proves that.
Can we discuss getting rid of sponsorships from gambling companies sponsoring professional football teams?? It's kind of a conflict of interest for a gambling company to sponsor them imo
The main outcome should be to protect the head of players, this includes the neck. Head gear should be compulsory. Studies have proved that repeated head injuries has led to many suicides but no one is talking about this!
The game is run by big gambling companies. They always have and always will do anything to have a massive edge over the punters. Inconsistency and zero accountability for refereeing decisions that decide games is an easy win for them every time. They control all of the sport in this country now. It’s going to get way worse before it ever gets better.
First time seeing this often mentioned tackle from all the talking on radio programs, it’s reckless and the injury must be taken into concern, last time I looked, the ear is located on the head, slightly back and lower than the temple, 2weeks fair ,could of gone 3. Gus looks a bit goof headed here,
By Gould n Smith’s logic; Stay on for concision n allow the chicken wing n hip drop. Sorry but smith is the last person that should comment on player welfare. Gould a close second. Gould think suspension should vary if it’s a star of the game. Absolute imbecile.
These players propel their bodies like battering rams into each other for 80 minutes each week... Concern for their safety in events like this is like being concerned for someones safety walking in a minefield. If it is really that bad, don't let them do it. They get payed good money for this, and part of that is for the intensity and risk that is involved at this high level. They know what they are getting themselves into. Don't mother this game into obscurity!
This seems simple as of this tackle. Don't lead with your head and make contact with the other player's head causing an injury to that person head. Guilty!!!
Same game same rules, so how can a league game be officiated differently from origin? They've given themselves different standards so no wonder there's been inconsistencies. If they can't decide the best way to ref a game then how is anyone else? Is an lbw call different in test cricket than local club cricket? Is a low blow called differently in a world title fight than it is in non title fight? No of course not. Get a grip and make definitive decisions Peter, you're in charge so lead ffs
Gus talking about it as if they're just playing for fun and not in a proper organised competition. Of course you can still go hard, but the players are also at work. So there must be a level of safety at their workplace, or else why are they there? Yes they get payed well, so they should expect reasonable protection while staying inside the rules of the game. I didn't agree with that Cronulla tackle decision though.
This is why alot of people stopped watching the NRL because of the bulshit with the bunkers they get paid just as much of the players and still can't get it right 👎
Unintentional contact to the head should just be a regular penalty and carry on. I remember you had to coat-hanger a player to get the bin, now even an accident can get you sent off.

Aaaand at the end to sum it up
Gus: heermmm ?? 🤷♂️😂
The Panthers were crap when Gus was there and as soon as they gave him the boot the club turned it around. The problem with Gus is he micromanages every club he's at and it never turns out well (ask Trent Barrett) so the last thing he should be doing is run anything within the NRL, heck he shouldn't even be allowed to run a chook raffle.
spot. on.
Gee that's a dumb comment.
@TheShepdawg9 How are the Dogs going? I rest my case 🤣
I cannot work in 2024 how some players get put on report later and there was no penalty at the time .
So they don't even focus on Dale finucan head clash. They mention it and then let him off
Seems like the match review guy isn’t really in touch with the game and it just feels like he’s putting on an inconsistent front because he can’t admit that he’s gotten it wrong. He’s not fit for the job.
“We’re not setting road rules mate we’re playing football”.
You can compare a origin game to a club game how many penalties and 6 to go’s are given to a club team that is favoured by the refs it’s easy to decide who makes the top 8 with rules like that just keep giving the team that is favoured to win six to go the defending team runs out of gas.
Bloke did well under pressure👏🏽
Well said by Abdo!
Solution!!
Just play touch football now..
And rugby league will be a memory.
Yeah thanks andrew!!!
Welcome to the new age of , lets all be soft
Of course players are willing to take risks, but you have to protect them from themselves
Abdo is an accountant, what do you expect haha
It’s this kind of admin sooky lala that’s killing the game!!! Put in players contracts that they can’t sue for injury and are playing at own risk. Pretty simple
No mention of Dirty Storm player Nelson tackle. Hypocrites.
Cameron would be perfect for MRC
Perfect if you never want one of his Melbourne mates suspended.
@@canwelook I mean, he called for a suspension for NAS (twice), Brandon Smith and Josh king on his pod and 3 instances that he said should receive suspension didn't.
As soon as this guy opened his mouth BS just flows
Why is it nearly always the away team that has players sent to the bin?
It’s pretty simple. Don’t go for the head and play on.
mate if you think the NRL is inconsistent you should see union, guys getting red carded for defending and getting head butted in the process
God. Cameron Smith was such a grub.
If Gus takes over the match review committee, he would never lose a bet again. Can you imagine putting a shocking gambler in charge of officiating
Grow up Gus, always looking for something to say
get rid of the bunker. I couldn't give a damn about statistics; it's ruining the game. What was wrong with the way we played football for the last f*cken 60 years? Why do we need to make changes at all? That's the game we fell in love with! The brutal nature of the sport makes it exhilarating!
never heard of this Adbo until today, what an absolute dope! is he a politician or NRL CEO??
He didnt mention it also comes down to which club the NRL doesnt like, plus who pays money to get their Eoosters players off. And also the people that run the game SPORTSBET
I think the NRL Judiciary needs a Professional Mixed Martial Artist on the table when judging if a takle is determined unlawful to NRL rules . They would have better understanding then a pen pusher !!!
There shouldn't be an MRC, deal with it on the field and play on
Abdo sounded really virtuous and has a broad and diverse selection of buzz words, I have a question for Andrew Abdo, why did the NRL abandon the Northern Territory Aborigines, in their greatest hour of need?
That’s AFL territory
I'm sorry cam. Are swinging arms OK now?
As knowledgeable Gus is, he still likes to sit behind a media desk and run his opinions across the set without repercussion.
With his standing in the game, and where the game is at, why doesn’t he put his money where his mouth is and actually go work for the nrl to fix what he sees as broken 🤷♂️
That would be a disaster. The best thing he could do is go away
@@owenrees7544 exactly
Wouldn't suit Gus.
Can't be a whinger when you're the one making the decisions.
Weathet you like him or not, Cameron Smith hit the nail on the head and its still a concern in 2023.
I agree with Gus
As a fan you want toughness
No way was fanucane a illegal tackle
If they want touch footy say do
everyone forget the quinnsie (kylie felt) in the origin knee to'o (twosie) ;) in the head (intentially)
video ref should have one nrl retired or just a player beside him when there's a video refing is done just a thought.
It’s called Duty of Care Cameron….. obviously he’s not employed anyone of late.
This Andrew guy sounds like a politician,
Can we discuss getting rid of sponsorships from gambling companies sponsoring professional football teams?? It's kind of a conflict of interest for a gambling company to sponsor them imo
The main outcome should be to protect the head of players, this includes the neck. Head gear should be compulsory. Studies have proved that repeated head injuries has led to many suicides but no one is talking about this!
Good idea, I reckon they should make a rule saying no head high tackles too...oh wait
The game is run by big gambling companies. They always have and always will do anything to have a massive edge over the punters. Inconsistency and zero accountability for refereeing decisions that decide games is an easy win for them every time.
They control all of the sport in this country now. It’s going to get way worse before it ever gets better.
Is the game growing?
First time seeing this often mentioned tackle from all the talking on radio programs, it’s reckless and the injury must be taken into concern, last time I looked, the ear is located on the head, slightly back and lower than the temple, 2weeks fair ,could of gone 3. Gus looks a bit goof headed here,
By Gould n Smith’s logic; Stay on for concision n allow the chicken wing n hip drop. Sorry but smith is the last person that should comment on player welfare. Gould a close second. Gould think suspension should vary if it’s a star of the game. Absolute imbecile.
Gus is always right, just ask gus
1 year all players need to wear headgear, that would decrease concussions, no harm in trying
Studies have shown mouthguards provide more protection from concussion than headgear
What if Crighton Waa wearing headgear and didn't get injured as bad, no difference?! I doubt it.
Isn’t gus too busy running the panthers? Ohhh that’s right, they sacked him.
League is dying a slow death. And "administrators" are not helping the cause.
they are the cause
Gus talking about it as if they're just playing for fun and not in a proper organised competition. Of course you can still go hard, but the players are also at work. So there must be a level of safety at their workplace, or else why are they there? Yes they get payed well, so they should expect reasonable protection while staying inside the rules of the game.
I didn't agree with that Cronulla tackle decision though.
This is why alot of people stopped watching the NRL because of the bulshit with the bunkers they get paid just as much of the players and still can't get it right 👎
The Finucane call was correct - he ran in recklessly and hurt the player.
Unintentional contact to the head should just be a regular penalty and carry on. I remember you had to coat-hanger a player to get the bin, now even an accident can get you sent off.
@@followthesapper324 There's been unintentional head clashes almost every game for years, and no send-offs. But in this case Finucane was out of control. Completely different. He should've gotten four weeks, not two.
how do? i'ld really like the powers that be to defer cleary's suspension giving at least 1 week served into the finals, to be fair. taztez
