    Nice review! The Spruce Green is the only CF from Zpacks that I have not owned/used.
    Small tip/recommendation... do not go straight from the head/foot panels down to a stake... use a stick off the ground. This will (a) actually give you more headroom - just pulling down does not - and (b) reduce (and can eliminate) that fabric stress "v" that was all too obvious the moment you tightened down the cordage, which will make it all the much better in your quest for a a more resilient fabric.

    • @RESTLESSOUTDOORS
      @RESTLESSOUTDOORS  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks so much for the tip John! I see what you mean as far as "stress" on the fabric pulling it straight down! I will try it the next time I'm out!!!

      Thats awesome Kev Ro! Agree on spending the extra dough for piece of mind! As a matter of fact, I stopped using a ground sheet all together! This stuff is pretty bomb proof... was in Dolly Sods this past weekend and set up on a patch of wet leaves... after the tent was up, I crawled in and realized I had set up on nasty roots... no issues whatsoever!!! Just had to adjust where I set my pad to avoid feeling them on my back! 😁 This tent has not let me down and I know you will love it!!!

    Thanks for the great review I found it really useful, and nice to see the wildlife behind you as well :-) I've been looking at LOTS of videos and written reviews of a few different tents for solo use (including Tarptent etc). Have pretty much decided on the Zpacks Duplex for all the reasons you've mentioned, but last decision was whether to go for the .74oz. I think the minimal extra 2oz weight (or 56g in Scotland where I live ;-)) is far outweighed by the privacy and durability factors. Really keen on the DCF fabric in that it doesn't sag and need readjusting the way silnylon does when wet. We don't get the regular torrential thunderstorms here I've experienced when hiking and camping around the Appalachians, but we sure do get some seriously high winds along with the rain in the Scottish Highlands and are very exposed due to lack of trees. I'm really interested to see how it performs in bad conditions, as would love to use it (3 season) hillwaking here in Scotland as well as during overseas travels. Thanks again thought you did a great job with this video :-)

      Thabks so much Debra! You will not be disappointed with the quality of this tent! Have taken it in the snow as well and have had no issues what so ever! I agree, the weight of the spruce is totally worth the extra privacy and stronger Cuban! Start uploading trips in Scotland! I bet it's unbelievably beautiful there! Thanks again! 😁

      Been a RUclips voyeur so far but considering getting a GoPro soon so maybe I'll get some Scottish hill-walking vids posted in the future instead of all the still photos I take :-) You are right, its an extraordinarily beautiful country, the light is something else. See you also got into kayaking - another past-time I love - its such a great way to explore and see things from a different perspective isn't it. Happy trails!

    yeah totally agree, love my Duplex, I have the natural .51 cuben, its an amazing tent, so light, easy to put up and lots of space for 2P or 1P, spend the $$ and you will never look back !! the .51 is a lot more opaque than many people think, my wife never has any privacy issues with it and its kinda nice with muted moonlight some nights. Strength wise the .51 is fine, super strong enough, same with the bath tube, no separate groundsheet is needed, done 1,000 miles so far and zero punctures or damage anywhere.............100% top stuff worth every cent !

They have the loops already attached right where the pockets for the treking poles go!!! Nice tent for summer hikes. I can't use this tent in Sweden in the early spring or late autumn if there was a risk for snow. The Hilleberg akto is the sweet spot for me. But the Cpac duplex seems to be a awesome tent for summer hiking.

    I'll be very interested in how you like the Duplex. It's reviews have been glowing and I don't think I've ever seen anyone say they were changing from the Duplex to something else. I have a couple Tarptents from HS. When hiking w/my dog I needed a tent that was rock solid and ended up going with the BA Foidel 2. Much heavier but pretty much bomb proof and made with a Dyneema and nylon. An interesting design, freestanding and for 3+ seasons (really 4 seasons except for the worst weather). Anyway, I noticed that 2 or 3 whitetails can been seen in the video between 50 seconds and 1 min. Look up the hill and over your right shoulder. Pretty cool. Another great video.

    Thanks man. You really covered every corner of this tent. In your opinion would you say that two 5’4”/140lbs women would fit in this tent? I’ve heard of this tent being more popular amongst soloist. That’s not exactly the case for me when backpacking.

    • @RESTLESSOUTDOORS
      @RESTLESSOUTDOORS  6 лет назад

      Hello Katherine!!!! I really appreciate it!!!! This would be a palace for two at your height!!!! My wife and I are 6 foot and we both fit perfectly side by side when you lower the trekking poles by a couple of inches... by lowering the tent poles, you lower the bathtub floor giving you more floor space!!! At 5'4", you can leave the height of the tent at 48", which is awesome headroom and still have room for each of your packs at your head or feet, or leave them in the vestibule like we do to sprawl out!!! If you really want a palace in the woods, Zpacks makes the Triplex, a 3 person version of this tent... but, I think that would be overkill for you honestly!!! The Duplex would be way more than sufficient!!!! Hope this helps!!!!

    One of the best reviews on this tent I've seen. I've searched long and hard for the right tent, trying not to spend this much, but I guess I have to accept good things sometimes come in expensive packages. What would you say is the smallest packed size for this tent, without poles of course?

    • @RESTLESSOUTDOORS
      @RESTLESSOUTDOORS  6 лет назад

      Thanks so much! Pack size is around 6 inches wide and 12 inches long... could compress smaller but not by much! Check out Gossamer Gears The Two... spitiing image of the Duplex... under 2 pounds and $200 less! The Duplex is pricey but it still is one of my favorite pieces of gear and worth every penny!

  • @HydeMyJekyll
    @HydeMyJekyll 6 лет назад

    How good does it do at keeping your sleeping bag dry? I'm trying to decide between this tent and the HLG Ultamid 2, and I'm really liking the idea of a built-in bathtub floor like this Duplex has. I do think the Ultamid is easier to set up and has more internal room, but their optional bug net + bathtub floor is an additional like 21 oz!!!

    • @RESTLESSOUTDOORS
      @RESTLESSOUTDOORS  6 лет назад

      Condensation can be an issue if you don't leave at least 2 doors open in the rain... but that's with any single walled tent! As far as the bathtub floor, it is VERY generous!!! By myself, I adjust the bathtub floor to @ 6-8 inches! I also never use a ground cloth to boot... the inside had always stayed nice a dry!!! Thanks for watching!

    Hey Restless Outdoors, the 70s called, they want their jacket back! Ahem. One thing I want to say about getting in, you could easily move the bottom of the pole away from you to exit or enter, and you would have an even easier time of it. It would have been nice to see you close the other flap so we could see how that works. Do the zippers work easily, does it even have zippers? I ask these things because I am absolutely fascinated by these cuben fiber products but know absolutely nothing about them, it is like I just arrived on the planet, or the tents did. Apparently you can't go to the store and touch one, and you are doing that for us. And I am glad you did!

    • @RESTLESSOUTDOORS
      @RESTLESSOUTDOORS  7 лет назад +1

      Hey hey hey.... leave my Mork and Mindy jacket alone! 🤣 The doors do not have zippers... just the mesh bug screen inside... the doors literally flap over one another creating an awesome seal! I must say, the CF tents are truley spectacular and I look forward every time I have an opportunity to use it! The weight is unbelievable!!!

    • @rideswithscissors
      @rideswithscissors 7 лет назад

      Glad you have a sense of humor! I want to get back into bike touring, and my bike is heavy duty, built for me, and I want to save as much weight as I can. I went to their website and read all about how it works, but you are the one that got me interested. I can't find any bad reviews about this tent, which somehow disturbs me. It could be that the expense of the tent weeds out casual users, who tend to complain about how cold a tent was, ha ha, and things like that. My last tent got me wet because the fly was one of those silicone jobs from REI, and a driving rain with a little hail drove water right through the fly and screen, I had to whip out the bivy sack. Nobody seems to say "we got soaked". I would also like to know if you can just cram it into the stuff sack, it looks like it can be, from the crumpled appearance of the fabric. I would also like to know the average size packed. Thanks again!

    Great video. It looks like the single person tent is a bit small to keep your pack inside and out of the rain.
    The two person tent looks like it provides plenty of room for your pack, however, I was curious if the two person adds enough weight to rule it out for a single through hiker on the AT?

    • @RESTLESSOUTDOORS
      @RESTLESSOUTDOORS  7 лет назад

      Thanks for the comment! Although I have never through hiked the AT... I personally would take this tent due to the room vs weight ratio... the way I look at at, if I'm spending months living in a tent, I would take the weight penalty and try to save weight in other areas like clothing, rain gear, etc... not that I would skimp on items like that but there are ways to easily lighten up for less money!

    • @jasonwish-
      @jasonwish- 7 лет назад

      I love setting up the hammock and drifting off to sleep but I seem to wake up often while trying to role onto my side, and because of how the hammock wraps around you slightly, things just seem to get bunched up a lot. I use the Hennessy Asym zip, regular size.....maybe I needed a slightly longer one since I'm 6'. A little more length would help i think. Not ready to give up yet, but I don't want to spend money on another one and have the same problem. How much was your tent by the way?

    • @RESTLESSOUTDOORS
      @RESTLESSOUTDOORS  7 лет назад

      Got it... a larger size could fix that! Want to make sure my wife doesn't read this or I might be living in my tent full time! Jason Wish. I had the Hennessy Safari Delux ( bottom entry ) which is a large hammock offering a lot of room. I have gone over to the Warbonnet Blackbird or the Clark Tropical which are my main two hammocks to use. I like the hammocks because of the Florida heat and humidity for the ventilation they offer. Plus I tend to camp in areas that really do not offer a lot of places for a tent. I have a good amount of gear from Zpacks and all of it is top quality , if they made a Hammock.

    Nice review. The weight and weather resistance of these tents sounds great. The thing I wonder about is resistance to high winds. I spend a lot of time summer camping in exposed, sub alpine or alpine areas in the Rockies and North Cascades. Wind speeds of 60-80 miles an hour are not that unusual. I wonder about the strength of a tent like this in conditions like that. If a lightweight tent like this could work in those conditions, that would be wonderful. I certainly don't need a 4 season tent capable of dealing with heavy snow loads but do need wind resistance.

    • @RESTLESSOUTDOORS
      @RESTLESSOUTDOORS  7 лет назад

      Thanks! Seeing that cuben fiber was originally used for sails on racing sail boats, I would venture to say that cuben would be pretty tolerable to strong winds... but 60 to 80? I don't know... sounds like a small tornado! 😀

    • @sl7293
      @sl7293 7 лет назад

      Average wind speeds on a number of summits, both in the east and the west, are well above 30 mph. When it actually gets windy at locations like that, including mountain passes and other areas above tree line, it can be be pretty intense. With the Zpacks duplex tent, I wonder about how aerodynamic the structure is in terms of dealing with high wind. It would be great to hear from people who have used the tent in conditions like that. I wonder what it is like trying to pitch the tent in 50+ mph winds or if there are special techniques for that.

    • @RESTLESSOUTDOORS
      @RESTLESSOUTDOORS  7 лет назад

      In wind speeds like that... I may look into the Hilleberg Tents... not saying that the CF would not work... I would just be more comfortable with multiple tie off points.

    Two words. Conden Sation. Last year I bought a very cheap single layer (too small) tent and said I would never ever go camping again. But this year I got a nice double layer tarp tent and love the thing. What a difference.
    So question is: Is this expensive Cuben fiber tent of yours any better? It is still single layer.

    • @RESTLESSOUTDOORS
      @RESTLESSOUTDOORS  7 лет назад

      Thanks drie wiel! ANY tent will get condensation.... with that said... it's all about ventilation. I owned the Sierra Designs Lightening 2 FL prior to the Duplex... same issues you were having... MISERABLE! Air flow was pretty much nonexistent! It also was a single wall design... I also owned the Eureka Sunriver 2... a double walled tent... that too had issues with condensation due to ventilation. Bottom line, a tent needs awesome airflow to curb down condensation. The Duplex has amazing airflow and is a single wallled design...this curbs down the condensation considerably! I have yet to create any condensation because I at least keep a door open, even in heavy rain. Still stay nice and dry! The Tarptents are an awesome tent! Congrats!!! 🖒🖒🖒Hope that answered your question and thanks so much for watching!

    Nice tent, but for 1/4 the price you can have a Desert Walker at the same weight.
    After using both, opted for the DW. The noise of rain made me go with the cheaper tent. Way quieter and seems more durable. Time will tell.

    • @yairroif5045
      @yairroif5045 5 лет назад

      Have you had problems of condensation with the DW? And I guess it sags in the rain like any other nylon shelter, correct? Im really on the fence about the duplex..

    • @boulder89984
      @boulder89984 5 лет назад

      It drains well. I was in 60 degree weather for 4 nights. It rained 3 nights, two of which were pouring. Other than what I considered light condensation it was great. Never leaked a drop.
      My main issue was I used a down 35 degree bag. If I had spent one more night, we would have needed to stop in the sun to dry stuff out.
      My $325 Shires Tarptent would have not been any better. The only thing I did not like was the fact it's around 46 inches tall. On a 15 degree morning I would definitely bump some ice off the inside while getting dressing in the morning and have a cold wake up call down my back.
      If the Z pack were as tall as my Double Rainbow tent it would be fabulous as its 23 compared to 34 ounces. But I find the 23 ounces of DW to be great for one person and a dog or two people if camper number 2 brings a ground sheet to lay on.
      But the cool factor of the Z Pack is hard to top. Let me know what you get.

    • @yairroif5045
      @yairroif5045 5 лет назад

      What I really like the zpacks for is the cuben fiber's no sag. I just hate the sagging of wet nylon. Have the wall gotten really close to your face while sleeping?
      If not the crazy import tax and shipping cost of the zpacks from the US I might've pulled the trigger on it already. I read that silpoly doesnt sag as much as silnylon and could rival the cuben fiber in that. Problem is its not a very common material even among the cottage companies. I think I'll either wait for a friend who goes for a trip in the states to get me the duplex or look for a silpoly tent.

      RESTLESS OUTDOORS Found it by accident on Amazon. 150 for yellow and 160 for camouflage. The camo pic shows is yellowish. Actually a greenish color. .

    Would the free standing option be useful on the AT considering the significant cost?

    • @RESTLESSOUTDOORS
      @RESTLESSOUTDOORS  6 лет назад +1

      I really don't think it's needed... most people who have completed the AT with their Duplex used just their trekking poles with no issues... although there may be more rocky terrain up north where it would be convenient, but not needed.

    • @tombock5472
      @tombock5472 6 лет назад

      Thanks. I was concerned because several reviews mentioned difficulty getting it setup properly on uneven ground and several times the stakes pulled up. I can imagine that severely compromises the integrity of the structure. Would hate to have an issue during a storm.

    • @RESTLESSOUTDOORS
      @RESTLESSOUTDOORS  6 лет назад +1

      Understand!!! That was a huge concern of mine as well... did not want to invest in such a pricey tent , especially one that is non-freestanding... the key is to use the right stakes... I use the MSR Groundhogs (regular size... not the mini)... these stakes bite in the ground and have never failed me! I have seen people use shepard hook stakes and have them pop out of the ground though so I stayed away from them. I have used this tent for almost a year and have been quit impressed by not only the weight, but it's space, durability, and function! There is a good reason you see a ton of the Duplex tents on the AT!

  • @surfandstreamfisher5749
    @surfandstreamfisher5749 6 лет назад

    Cuben fiber does absorb water, not as nylon but it still does. The a good thread about it on Whiteblaze.net. Liked the video! When I do the Duplex i'll go with the heavier material also.

    • @RESTLESSOUTDOORS
      @RESTLESSOUTDOORS  6 лет назад

      Thanks jerry d!!! I tried following the link and did not see the article... One thing that is true, CF does break down over time... that's why Zpacks puts a shelf life on these tents (I believe 1 thru-hike, although folks have used it far beyond that without any issues)... I have owned a ton of different style/material tents or the years... nylon does protect from water but if you have any contact inside the tent walls while inside, the water will seep through... I did not find that with CF... and after a rain, the tent could easily be wiped down without absorbing any water... at least with my experience... but true, CF does break down and I can see the fibers eventually trapping water in time... but for how often I use it, it should be years before I experience that... at least I hope!!!! 😁 Thanks so much for the like and for watching!!!!

      Thanks pgreenx! Will do a follow up video with the tent in 2018... but I can tell you this... that is not an issue!!!! There is ample room where you lay your head down on either end... plus, there are pull outs that when used in conjunction with the carbon fiber kick stands, nearly make the side walls vertical!!!

    Major Heath Warning!!! This tent will cause HYPOXIA. Lack of ventilation will give you a major headache. You must leave at least one vestibule open at all times, even in the freezing cold and rain. Condensation is also a major problem in cold weather camping. You will have ice and or water on everything inside including your sleeping bag.

    • @RESTLESSOUTDOORS
      @RESTLESSOUTDOORS  6 лет назад

      Don't know about Hypoxia.... I've slept in this tent MANY nights fully closed and had excellent air flow... Condensation is just part of owning any single wall tent... you are correct in wanting to leave at least one side open to combat it!!! Thanks for watching!
