Hi Everyone! Thank you for watching and for all the great questions that are coming up here in the comments. To avoid repetition and my answers getting lost, I've started an FAQ section in the video description. I'll update it periodically, so do check back for more info. Cheers! - Dennis
I've tried Suminagashi a couple of times and struggled to find the right paper for the ink to stick, because I didn't know that I could prepare the paper myself! Could you share more details about how you mix and apply the alum? In any case, thanks for the wonderful video and the sincerity about your craft.
@wdavidgeorge I agree! I actually practice Ebru (marbling), and it has a definitive, lowering effect on one’s blood pressure. This video is great in its technical presentation and hints at the challenges of a fluid canvas; if you want to see some truly amazing art produced with the technique, check out videos by Garip Ay (Turkey) and Olga Kaurova (St Petersburg). Olga’s youthful style is enhanced by her musical choices, and Garip Ay is THE Ebru master of all masters (trained artist and well known on his continent).
When I was in first grade, we got to make our own books. We started with learning how to make paper. Then we got to marble the first and last page. We "Bound" all our paper in card, added our water marbled pages, and sewed it with yarn. Then we got to write our own story in it. The best thing about having to repeat first grade was I got to do it twice. I will always remember that as the best days of my school years. Your page helps me geek out about this kind of stuff and I really appreciate you. Thank you.
Yes please, a full tutorial on mixing the solutions for the size, the paper and the chemicals for the paint, the whole thing would be perfect, as well as more marbling sessions showing the different patterns you achieve - the more the merrier - I love this channel
I'd absolutely watch more marbling videos. The design you made for Dune is perfect- how you captured a pattern so evocative of rolling sand dunes in such a variable medium like this is truly impressive!
I got to do this once at a local craft show, except it was with a silk scarf. One of my former teachers purchased the scarf but couldn't stay around to do it, so she gave it to me. I decorated it like you showed and gave it to my mom :) The guy running the booth was a very good teacher.
Yes, please do a full tutorial on paper marbling. The designs are exquisite and I would like to try it myself. You are a true craftsman and it is a pleasure to watch you work.
The moment you pulled out this paper in the final episode of the Dune series, I was in love. It's perfect for that book, and I'm so glad you created a separate video on it!

I don't know how to even begin to thank you. Thanks to you, I completed my first gothic binding, following your video step by step and watching them over and again. I found some marbled paper from my friends to use as endpapers but I wish I knew how to make them as beautiful as you did. You are a great inspiration for this lovely community. I hope you will find it in your heart to continue producing such quality content with the same passion. I, for one, feel very lucky to be able to watch you work. Of course we would like to see more of your marbling process. As one of the comments pointed out, we would like to watch you prepare the paint, the size and the alum paper. Who knows, maybe I may be able to learn a thing or two and my next gothic binding may have in-house marbled endpapers at last :) P.S: A tutorial on springback binding would also be great! Thank you so much!
Very interesting. We also did this in third grade, but not with the professional products you have. Liquid starch can hold surface tension as well as oil. Thank you for inviting us to watch how it’s done with the excellent history.
Thank you, Denis. I’ve seen videos on marbling before, but you explain everything in such interesting detail. This one, for Dune, was perfect. And yes please, more marbling, more bookbinding ….more anything!
The process looks so therapeutic. The designs and finished product look amazing. Would love to see more about the way you create the different designs. Thank you.
I actually started marbling because of your tiger's eye video. I've created nothing as exquisite as yours, but I have made some nice prints, used for notebooks and lampshades, maybe endpapers one day
Loved watching this process from the start to finish. So lovely in the DUNE book you made. I watch your videos all the way through and am very happy to do so. Thank you for your efforts.
Back in grade school our teacher made marbled papers for our binders when we were studying the basics of space and planets. I recall the awe I felt over the colour and pattern meant to appear as the surface of Jupiter. It is a lovely technique with fantastic results. Thanks for the video!
I love the books and now marbling content. It's so amazing watching you keeping this art form alive and doing such amazing book bindings. I'm so glad I found your channel, it's something I listen to while prepping my stories for the next dnd sessions for my group.
Beautiful work - and I too would enjoy a deeper dive into this art! I read about medieval calligraphy at the beginning of this year, and I'm fascinated by the astonishing range of exotic sounding substances involved just to create ink and paint for illuminations. This is just as exotic to me!
this is perfect! just when I've been having such a hard time trying to gather info about marbling to start myself this video comes up. that detailed info in the description is priceless! not like those "just buy this suminagashi kit" I've heard so many times. thanks!
This video is fantastic, both inspiring and informative. I bought everything I needed to try paper marbling in January and am just waiting until it gets warm enough to work outside on my porch. I think your draining/washing board is very clever and will have to think about how to adapt something similar for my modest setup.
Your timing is perfect! Such crucial decisions require experience and guts! So beautifully done. I think I will be a book binding craftsman in my next life! I am currently pressing orchids for some collages I'm creating. Your channel is definitely inspiring. Thank you! Fabulous results!
I've watched a few dozen videos on marbling and just wanted to say yours is my favorite. So nicely done and everything is explained well. The final print was gorgeous.
I really like the inclusion of that vibrant blue, intense orange, and deep maroon color in amongst all of the sandy tones. It really makes the patterns pop and look more artistic than if you had taken a purely realistic approach to recreating the aesthetic of rolling sand dunes.
I would definitely love to see more about the process of marbling paper. By you, just to make that clear. I love your content. The slow pace, the calmness of the video style and your pleasant narration is balm for the soul :)
I tell you what i was NOT expecting that i will be honest i thought i was just going to see a simple paper dipped in water to make some random image. But this absolutely blew me away it was so beautiful and it's obvious you are passionate about this as it comes across in your video. This is what RUclips should be about folks like you sharing your passions with the world. Thanks for uploading this
More on marbling would be really good content! Your prints, as well as your work is amazing! Could you explain more about the size? I think it's basic to do yet I can't get it right. Thanks and amazing works!
I've just started getting into bookbinding. You're channel was a big inspiration in getting me into the craft. I'd really like to see more videos on paper marbeling. How do you get different patterns? I saw one in your drawer that looked like leaves. Is it a bunch of trial and error or are there books on the subject?
That's great, welcome to the craft! Many marbled paper patterns are traditional and repeatable, though the variations are limitless. There are quite a few good books on the subject; I have added a 'further reading' section to the FAQ in the video description, and I'll add more titles there as I am able. Thanks for watching!
Absolutely fascinating! THANK YOU for an AMAZING and STUNNING and INFORMATIVE demonstration! You are incredibly talented, not only in the book arts, but in your teaching and presenting. I truly appreciate your channel! THANK YOU!!!!

J'aimerai savoir ce que contient le bac , quelle type de peinture faut-il utiliser, et quel type de papier faut-il ?
Merci 🙏
I love watching things like this it is so beautiful. I've only seen it done on scarves. Had no idea it was done on paper, too.
That’s a really, really beautiful print! I enjoyed your filming work and voiceover, too. : )
I've tried Suminagashi a couple of times and struggled to find the right paper for the ink to stick, because I didn't know that I could prepare the paper myself! Could you share more details about how you mix and apply the alum? In any case, thanks for the wonderful video and the sincerity about your craft.
Beautiful! I would love to see more marbling videos from you.
I'd very much love more marbling content. It's mesmerizing to watch. I bet of lot of people will find it relaxing, as well as informative.
Definitely relaxing… 😌

The music is good too!
Absolutely would love to see more of this when you do it. Beautiful and interesting indeed.

Also because of your videos, I have now made my own handmade mini book. Complete with hand skived leather and hand sewn pages.
Yes please, a full tutorial on mixing the solutions for the size, the paper and the chemicals for the paint, the whole thing would be perfect, as well as more marbling sessions showing the different patterns you achieve - the more the merrier - I love this channel
Definitely interested in seeing more of your paper marbling!
More of this, please and thank you.
Absolutely gorgeous and would love to see more!
I'd absolutely watch more marbling videos. The design you made for Dune is perfect- how you captured a pattern so evocative of rolling sand dunes in such a variable medium like this is truly impressive!
Awesome, thank you!
Just because of this, i went out and bought a basic paper marbling kit. I will now add my own handmade marbled papers to my books. Thank you.
I love the other ones as well -- they remind me of Zion National Park in the US. Beautiful work.
I would love to see more videos on marbling paper. Thank you

I love this, Dennis! What vibrant colors you achieved!
Thank you!
We learnt to do this in our school library when I was 7 - I loved it and it still has wonderful memories 50 years later.
This whole Dune series has been fantastic!
That is an almost magical procedure, so beautiful. And those drawers full of marbled papers, sheer heaven for any paper lover 😊
This is the ACTUAL best Dune spinoff 😊
Yes, please do a full tutorial on paper marbling. The designs are exquisite and I would like to try it myself. You are a true craftsman and it is a pleasure to watch you work.

Thank you Dennis. Yes, please more. Tell whatever you would like to share with us neophytes.
Bless you .
Yes, absolutely would love more marbling content, whether it's tutorials, commentary free ASMR, whatever it may be!
One thing I love about my old books is this "simple" elaborate cover...... so precious
I remember the first time I saw marbling done. It's as fascinating as it is beautiful.
This is so beautiful! I would love to see more
Very interesting. We also did this in third grade, but not with the professional products you have. Liquid starch can hold surface tension as well as oil. Thank you for inviting us to watch how it’s done with the excellent history.

Wonderful! It takes practice, but I find it to be quite relaxing, and even the not-so-good prints can find a use, so win-win! Keep at it!
