  • Legendary British Author John le Carré on Why He Won't Be Reading Tony Blair's Iraq War-Defending Memoir
David Cornwell, the legendary British novelist who writes under the name John le Carré, joins us in London. A former British spy, his books include The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and The Constant Gardener. On the heels of the publication of British Prime Minister Tony Blair's Iraq war-defending memoir A Journey, le Carré explains why he refused to interview Blair and why he won't be reading his memoir.

Quite simply David Cornwell is the only man worth listening with his views on the world.

If anyone knows foreign affairs and the ins and outs of diplomacy it's Le Carre. Brilliant. Thanks for posting Start. Europeans have learned from their history...judging from the Tea Bagger movement many in the US have learned nothing from theirs.

What an incredibly intelligent and perceptive person. I have the utmost respect for him. I couldn’t help but notice how he refers to himself as a European

"A leader who does take his country to war under false pretences is quite simply not an acceptable person ... It seems to me quite simply wrong." - David Cornwell on Tony Blair's conduct in taking the UK into the Iraq war.

2019 and these events are of historical interest but I don't see anything getting better; Obama took the brunt of the huge recession created largely by the Bush administration policy based on Milton Friedman's school of economics which is an unmitigated disaster with repercussions reaching to the present moment. David Cornwell and his literary predecessor Graham Greene must be profoundly respected for their ability to portray humanity with so much empathy -- one example is Jim Prideoux (sp) in Tinker Tailor etc., a victim of betrayal who does in my view has the right to exert his own justice … goes on and on. Excellent interview, very grateful for this video!

I've read and loved everything that both Cornwell and Graham Greene have written. Incidentally, when The Spy Who Came In From The Cold was first published Greene, a renowned writer of spy novels and other classic fiction, reviewed Cornwell's novel. What did he say about it? He called it "The finest espionage novel I have ever read." One can only assume that, like Cornwell, he had no patience whatsoever for the silly fantasy hero spy stuff of the likes of the James Bond novels. Greene's novels of that sort, as well as David Cornwell's are far darker, more grim, and above all realistic. For Cornwell's part, when asked why he started writing when he did, he said part of the motivation was his own disgust over the ridiculous portrayal of the spy business in Ian Fleming's popular but very stupid novels. And Fleming, like Cornwell and Greene, a veteran of real spy work, should have known better. When grim and terrible things were happening between people on both sides of the Cold War every single day, things that most of the public didn't have an inkling of, what did Ian Fleming give the reading public? "James Bond on a plastic plate." said a disgusted Cornwell.

As much as i like and respect David Cornwell, he is fundamentally incorrect on thecwar in iraq. To begin with he fails to assess or evenn mention the last European war involving the UK and the US that being Yugoslavia. The outcome is there for all to see de facto, peace and prosperity and EU membership for all regions except the major aggressor Serbia. Takinng that ethos into a similar regional conflict was the entire basis of Iraq pt 2.

Le Carre's earlier works were great. It is unfortunate what happened to his later works.
