Inter Milan are TERRIFYING & Arsenal stunned by FC Porto | UCL This Week

  • Arsenal looked like a side that had completely underestimated their opponent, as Arsenal fell 1 - 0 away to FC Porto. Sergio Conceição and his squad were incredible, limiting Arsenal to few attempts, and not a single attempt on target. Thanks to the late heroics from Galeno, Porto got a deserved win.
    Inter Milan should have beat Atletico Madrid by a far, far bigger margin. If it wasn’t for the misfiring Arnautovic up front for Inter, their match against Atletico would have been far more lopsided. Simone Inzaghi is emerging as one of the top coaches in Europe, and Inter look like a top three side!

    Inter - ATM in the Metropolitano is an unstoppable force meeting an unmovable object: Inter hasnt lost as visitor and even more so all the statistics are better as visitors that at home, all of them, for example most goals conceded have been at home. Arnautovic definitely wasted it for us and we should have finished this but i do think Inter still has the edge, Simeone is forced to risk and in those spaces Inter has become lethal.

    The Porto-Arsenal game was very poor but if there was to be a winner, it had to be Porto since we executed our plan very well. Arsenal were very conservative and passive from open play, and their play felt very nervy at times, especially in the middle of the 1st half and near the end. The amount of time they took with each set piece and the lack of assertiveness and cutting edge in possession, and the lack of subs Arsenal made was all... very strange. It's as if Arteta planned for a draw.
    Their players were also very uninspiring in attack. Apart from Rice, who even with a booking very early on was still pressing and making crucial tackles, the Arsenal team felt a bit flat. Whether it was the atmosphere within the stadium or the fleeting belief in a win setting in with each passing minute, or even a mix of both, I don't know. Martinelli will take the blame for that bad pass, but, again, the whole team was clearly feeling a bit nervous, especially by the end there. We did what I expected us to do: Be defensively solid and try to counter. We didn't just drop deep and park the bus like I've seen some say. There were moments of the game where we were heavily pressing Arsenal as they played from the back. But obviously, we only were pressing when needed and for some periods of time where we felt Arsenal's confidence dropping without sending too many players forward. Say what you want about Sérgio Conceição, and I have said A LOT about him (especially lately), but he set the team up perfectly. Even his substitutions were well thought, Ivan Jaime coming into the midfield in particular as a counter to Jorginho came on. Our defensive play in particular is what won us the game, because attacking wise we weren't that great either besides sporadic moments of brilliance from Pepê and Franscisco Conceição. As much hate Wendell usually gets from the Porto fanbase online (myself included), the lad gave everything he had until he literally couldn't anymore. João Mário was phenomenal as well. Reminder to those who do not know: This lad is converted winger, playing as a fullback. His evolution playing there has been amazing.
    Nico did well. Varela was IMMENSE and my choice for MVP, covering for Pepe (who was also better than his last few games) and Wendell and being legitimately everywhere... must have Duracell batteries on him. Shoutout to Otávio as well. He did better than expected for just his 2nd start ever for Porto and his Champions League debut. Galeno did score a worldy (even if Raya was maybe a step or two off-position or dived a bit early), even after having missed a sitter with that ball off the bar. The second one he had to quickly react to, so I can understand not getting it on target. Hell, he misplaced a pass 30 seconds before scoring THAT goal. Which, honestly, is just Porto in a nutshell this season.
    But, overall a very poor game. Even from the referee himself. 51% of actual play throughout the whole match. Way too many easy fouls given and that messed up the flow of the game a bit and that obviously played into our hands, but Arsenal didn't show any fight. Maybe they were too busy praying for Porto.
    Are we going to lose at the Emirates and not go through? Probably. The likes of Jesus and Zinchenko are out and Jorginho just came back from a knock. Arsenal will bounce back and be "their normal selves" come the 2nd leg. And we will be our normal selves as well, I expect our defense to crumble under Arsenal's pressure who'll want to make things right in their eyes. But this showed that Arsenal are not quite there at the elite level, at least in Europe.

    The thing with Atletico is that Simeone started change their tacticts based on Inzaghi style, but still he got outclassed, and once Inzaghi fixed the wrong formation choice (Darmian can't deliver as a right midfielder, plus with Dumfries and Buchanan available its even more baffling choosing him) from the start and played like they should, they got bodied from Inter, literally they had no idea of how to even get out their half, an easy 3-0 was a more truthfull result looking at the performance. So he really has his hands full trying to find something that could work against Inter, the home advantage could very well not be enough, especially choosing players that can keep up with Thuram and Dumfries speed as they were struggling massively with them in the field.

    • @lobachevscki
      @lobachevscki 3 месяца назад +2

      I agree Darmian didn't end up delivering in this match but he has been very consistent, Dumfries is coming from an injury and even tho he has played Inzaghi was thinking about if could resist the intensity of ATM, Buchanan has played once. Darmian wasn't a baffling choice it was the safest one which is not necessarily a good thing.

    A comment on Dzeko (that i think i already mentioned but just to hammer it a bit): it is on Lukaku. The board needed to make decision about salaries and the priority was set on Lukaku (for better or worse), so Dzeko was let go not because they thought was bad or something but because his salary would have paid for Lukaku's and Thuram was still coming for free. Lukaku then went to ruin everything, the board decided to (rightfully so) kick his ass but Dzeko was already gone.
    It was unfair as i would have retained Dzeko over Lukaku any day, most of us Interisti would have as you implied, I do think is a mistake from the board but on the other hand the board trusted Lukaku who gave us a Scudetto and final match aside he carried Inter to said final (credit were credit is due), i also understand why Lukaku was prioritized, and he ruined it for everybody. So honestly fuck Lukaku and this is a mistake the board should learn from, letting go somebody like Dzeko trusting a third party shouldnt happen again.

    I know Arsenal arent out but they needed a humbling after the "give us Real Madrid" energy on social media throughout the group stages lmao. They probably turn it around in the 2nd leg but they were for sure given a taste of what its like being back on a big UCL night where youre gonna have to be a lot more measured and tactical and make the most of your chances. Not as reckless and chaotic open defences that they were coming across in the PL.
    Absolutely loved Inter v Atléti, it was such a good tactical matchup. Basically a direct opposite of what we saw with Barça v Napoli. Will be very interesting to see how that one goes in the end coz i still think Inter progress overall but Atléti are very dangerous at home and Inter not getting a second goal may keep that one very much open for some chaos in the 2nd leg once Atléti have the Metropolitano behind them.

    I almost fully agree with your take on the PSV penalty. The one thing I disagree with is the at-least-look-at-it thing, I hear often. Was there ever a situation where the consensus was that most people disagreed with the Refs decision but they were not mad because he looked on the screen? I only care for the right or wrong decision not how often they looked at it to make the wrong one. Also I don’t want the Refs to be sent to the screen for every potentially somewhat controversial decision. This wasn’t controversial tho but plain wrong, so obviously it should have been overturned.
