When you have WTF behavior like this, there's a lot of chance it's about hardware defect. I had similar non-sense issues with my GPU, it just died after 2 days ... It was under warranty so vendor instantly replaced it. The best way to diagnose is testing hardware parts one by one, try another GPU from a friend and use your machine for 1 or 2 days, you 'll be sure then. My advice, always buy from well-known vendors where you can easily return products, there's a lot of fake cards on the internet beware ... GL bro

Ive been building computers for 20 some years now though I am a software developer not a hardware engineer. Anyhow, as you eventually found out; it was indeed likely a problem with the GPU. I can tell you that the wrong bios thing probably didn't cause the issue; the most likely problem was that the card has a manufacturing flaw. Having just done a quick Google search on this card, there are a few people who found that the 1080 ti SC had the different bios. My guess is that it was an intentional choice or a mistake that effected a batch of cards. Either way, it just wouldn't have a large impact and it wouldn't give you this kind of delayed failure (normally a card will crash out of the gate with the wrong bios).
The most frustrating thing about computers is the fact that it's really hard to figure out an exact problem due to the nature of the software and the hardware. Two people with indentical setups can have the same error code and it can be the result of something completely different. You did the right thing looking at both the PSU and the GPU, the other potential problem could have been the ssd given the initial symptoms. As far as your PSU goes, never open that thing to clean it. Power supplies can hold a charge even if you don't have them plugged in and it's very dangerous to open them up. It's better to just spray some condensed air into the vent and shake the dust out.
You probably shouldn't sell the other gpu if it comes back fixed. You may want to keep it as a back up just in case something like this happens again. Anyhow, glad you found your solution.

i've got 2 PSU both like 8-9 years old and never failed, it's really hard for the PSU to fail and if it does your PC won't even start.
Same for CPU, memory , the PC won't start if they aren't working properly(i've had 2x memory sticks fail), the memory won't show correctly in (pc properties) for example 8gb instead of 16gb if there's a problem
If there's cooling problem with your CPU , you can notice in the motherboard temperature (like i would hit max temperature) , placing fans in a proper order in Chase can fix it (going down like 10-15 *C).
For the gpu (in case you don't have a igpu) : overheating can cause crashing , if you don't have the power cable inserted it can also crash, if it doesn't perform as good it could be a driver or a gpu problem .. etc
You need to do a DDU to clear any remains of Gpu driver , also for older gpus some times older drivers work better.
      .............
My dad pc would also crash every time something intensive would start, after a few months we decided to move to the pc to another room i noticed that the cable wasn't pugled in fully, since then it has 0 crashes.
I suggest people to buy hardware from Amazon cause it's easiest to return, if there's a problem just return it as soon as possible

@@theroofwithoutahome2352 a PSU can short out in strange ways where your computer can still boot but a piece of hardware; typically the GPU, doesn't get enough power. I've seen this happen via bad cables and shorts in the actual box. And when a PSU fails like this it will also throw other symptoms out if you've got a power hungry setup. You may see memory issues, cpu issues and fan problems. Luckily you are right in thinking that PSUs are fairly durable but people buy cheap ones sometimes.

    • @jacobbrown739

It's also a good idea to buy a PSU that has the capability to deliver about 20% more power than your pc needs under load. I ran into some issues using a 1200W PSU on a system that had an upper limit around 1100W. After weeks of trouble shooting and testing two separate 1200W power supplies(not cheap ones either) with both stock and custom cables that I had built specifically for that system, I put a 1500W PSU in it and it ran almost flawlessly ever since.
I really enjoy building pc's and have been doing it for nearly two decades but the only time I don't like working on a PC is when I don't have another one that works.

My first instinct is your harddisk is bugging out. I'd quickly go buy a new ssd, clone your drive to it and go from there. Definitely could be your graphics card as well after watching further, I think it's between those two items in my professional IT opinion and from when I was a professional computer builder/tester back in the day.
edit: Ah cool, so it was the graphic card. I know how frustrating it can be. I'd recommend always having a spare card around since this is your livelihood. Or even have 2 rigs lol. I have a gaming rig, and a video editing/encoding rig.

I used to do diagnostics myself and spend way too much time on it like you. These days when my PC has an obvious issues I usually just take it to a trustworthy PC repair shop and explain my issues. For like 35 Euros they will do a full diagnostics run and tell you what is wrong the next day. They will usually tell you what they would do to fix it but most of the time it is cheaper for me to replace the part myself.
As they have all sorts of hardware lying around and lots more experience and diagnostic tools at a good shop, they usually find out what is wrong pretty easily and accurately and save me sooooooooooooo much time it is easily worth the money.

There was a period of time where i too was running into the NVLDDMKM error with my MSI 1070ti. It was frustrating because periodically my monitors would lose signal from my computer. What ended up being my problem was an unstable GPU overclock. Try lowering your GPU clock speed and memory speed (probably separately to try and narrow down which is causing the problem for you) hope that this can help you
edit: even if you or the person you bought the card from didn't mess with any over-clock settings, it is very common for reference GPU cards to be over-clocked out of the box from the manufacture.

First of all, thank you for sharing this story. At some point in your story I thought that your harddisk or SSD could also be broken. My brother had with his old PC a similiar issue, but that was related to a broken harddisk and a broken motherboard. At the end the constant crashes also broke the Graphic card.

    • @draakisback
      @draakisback 5 лет назад

Failures due to windows updates are almost always software problems. The reason this can happen is because of the "state" of your machine when the update is applied. State on a computer is not predictable and even if an update applies properly, your machine might have some weird state that causes an issue. This is why refreshing windows or reinstalling windows typically fixes those problems. It resets the operating system and also resets the complicated state on your machine.

First, I'm sorry to hear about this, my sympathies for your PSU and the computer at large. I don't play PoE anymore because my old system just can't handle it any longer, but I still appreciate you as a youtuber. Second, the used card being refurbished situation seems plausible. I honestly think its simply the GPU dying out, over worked or over stressed based off of all the tests you have done.
Reason being the unintended voltage differences wearing on the GPU over time, it wouldn't take a lot before this caught up with the part. Aside from this, I would highly recommend you make sure your storage drive is functioning normally (transfer rates) just to be sure. I hope you get up and running soon, someday I hope I will play again too, but until then I'll check out your videos every now and then. Thank you for your content.

My PC had kind of similar symptoms a few years ago, it turned out to be an audio interface I had used for both recording and communications microphones. It was crashing my computer overnight or anytime I left the PC running unattended, and causing my computer to become extremely slow and stutter real bad during use. My memory would slowly climb up to 100% use, and the only way to clear it, was a hard restart. Unplugging the audio interface did not work. It actually made it impossible to run certain games with the device plugged in. My fix at first was to use the 1/8" line out instead of USB for comms but it wasn't ideal for my recording. Eventually I purchased a USB microphone for comms, and a new audio interface for recording (that works much better in general) and I no longer have these issues.
A shame the device is basically a paper weight, as it's discontinued, with no software updates or fixes, but at least the new one cost less than the first audio interface and works much better.

No idea about the technical side, but considering how working on your computer is kind of your job a backup system (can be somewhat older) almost seems mandatory. • @Wyltsi
    @Wyltsi 5 лет назад +5

Could be your power supply. You can run the tests because they stress only one part of your computer and it does not stress PSU too much. But when running more stressful stuff like games and your GPU you simply run out of power -> computer freezes. Also the discord freeze would support this theory if you are using the ingame layout for discord cos that shit is SUPER heavy.
I feel your pain man. Just ordered a new mobo + cpu myself, spent 3 days trying to get my computer working after installing them just to realize the new cpu was dead on arrival...
EDIT: Sorry, did not watch till the end before commenting. But now I feel your pain even more because I bought EXACTLY THE SAME PSU as you did to support my new motherboards extra 4pin 12V cable requirement just to realize it was not my old PSUs fault :'(

There is no way it's a power supply issue. You can see he's got a 750 in there which is far more than his system needs, even with a custom cooler. Additionally PSU problems wouldn't cause stutter frame rates and high CPU usage; what you see more often with PSU faults is your videocard or other high draw components periodically stop responding for a second because power is being spread too thin or not received correctly. This is very likely a RAM issue, in particular if he just swapped in new RAM before this started he may have accidently damaged his DIMM slots.

@@Ashtarte3D Ye man. You probably missed my edit because it is hidden under show more but I agree. Not the PSU. I'd suggest a solid/modest second working pc to swap individual parts to find out if problems repeat. Try leaving PoE running in one instance, such as HO to see if the problem replicates with new zones or just over time.
Try playing or leaving PoE open for a while with the GPU unplugged, see if the problem replicates.
Also would try unplugged half your ram, seeing if that changes, if not unplugging the other half instead, see if that is the issue.

Then, go to MSI afterburner and check your gpu temperature and load (if your gpu was working in a dusty rig I'm critical temperatures, it may cause damage). Sometimes it's worth adjusting the fans speed. If nothing fishy was found, check your cpu temperature, you may use Aida 64. For this purpose.

Unless you bought a used, refurbished or ex-display card, you shouldn't have got a video card that anyone has touched, it is unlikely the manufacturer loaded the wrong bios. You should take it up with the place you purchased your video card from.
My i9-9900K puts out a lot of heat and even though the Noctua is a good cooler, unless your case has amazing airflow it tends to radiate a lot of heat back into the case. The heat sinks on it also sit too close to the GPU for my liking, they could be radiating a lot of heat onto parts of the GPU circuit board which doesn't have a thermal monitor, the heat from overclocking could be compounded by additional heat from the CPU and perhaps caused some capacitors on the card to be damaged due to the heat which causes the card and system to malfunction under load.
I run a waterblock on both my cpu and gpu now, I think water is just a more efficient mechanism for moving heat around, even under heavy load the water doesn't significantly rise in temperature, you can handle the tubing, and it pushes the heat to the radiator(s) which are on edge of the case, a lot further away from the motherboard and other components.
I think if you are going to use a high end cpu and/or GPU and you plan to run it under load for long periods at a time you should consider heat management.

    8. The user
    7. Application (a program, game etc.)
    6. Presentation (formatting of the data to "computer language")
    5. Session (maintains connections between computers)
    4. Transport (assembly/disassembly of sent(received data)
    3. Network (router, switches (only if it's a layer 3 switch), and access points)
    2. Data link (Switches, MAC addresses)
    1. Physical (Cables, hubs etc)
In your case, swapping parts would've been in layer 1 since you "just" needed a different GPU. What the exact reason might be since it was malfunctioning is hard to tell. The BIOS could've been the issue, but I personally don't think it should've been a different that would've made that much impact on your fps.
I was thinking while I was watching the video, that it could've been the motherboard as well, since it is old (my personal one as well), so it could've just been worn up. A car don't run forever either. You can repair it, but the parts will still get worn up at some point.
Anyway, I'm a dane too. So in case you need help another time, just post it on Discord, and I'll happily volunteer to give some feedback to help you out.
I'm glad you're back, even though I don't have time to watch everything you're doing.

IT student here, with over 15 years of personal troubleshooting experience 1. 90C on CPU is WAY...WAY too high, 90F is pushing so 90C is a big NO. You want to target at most 80F to 85F degrees on a CPU, this can result in the CPU throttling (lowering the speed of the CPU to protect its self). 2. the cable management (where there is non) in such a compacted cased could be restricting airflow. 3. a five year old CPU that is overclocked could be dying. I suspect that the CPU is throttling by overheating CPU is the problem. I would also run task manager in the background to see if the CPU usage is at 100% (this is not usually reflective of CPU overheating, but still good to see if CPU usage while playing/testing). If you think that it is the GPU, you can take the GPU out, and build a baseline for the performance with the graphics on your motherboard, then if it becomes more laggy and then goes back to normal, while you are playing or have discord open, then that shows that it most likely is the CPU throttling. It is not the power supply, it is good to clean it, but never open up a power supply, it is vary dangerous, and they do use glue usually to keep thinks in place for power supplies because it is non conductive so that is normal.

Sometimes ...it's a short. You should never handle hardware if your on carpet or any kind of static potential. Event stuff you can't feel can really do damage to your pc. I use a rubber insulator under my PC. And make sure your properly grounded your power supply. Did you unplug and re-plug everything. Check your power cords as well. :) Just a thought.

I completely respect your drive and persistence to solve your problem. The same “psychosis” works for me and usually I find the solution. In your case however, I think you were subconsciously in denial of a hardware GPU issue haha. Whatever can be replaced quickly (like NOT the PSU) is the first way to go. So, RAM, GPU and maybe CPU all of which you can borrow from a friend or keep in the “graveyard” at your place.

I have had the same issues with i7-4790K, MSI Gaming 7 board & 2x 1080 in SLI. Never found out what the issue was but it solved it self after several Windows reinstalls, mobo flashes, gfx card flashes.. nothing worked until it did. I suspect the board being semi malfunctioning as I have only had trouble with MSI products (2x970 cards, mobo, mouse) .. Although at that point I have had everything out of the case and reinstalled EVERYTHING. It is still alive and working now but I don't use that machine anymore as I upgraded everything (now on Ryzen which is another headache).

    • @Keshro

      Just remembered!
It was driver issues with the board. Windows 10 builds after 1803 or something like that always malfunctioned while previous Windows 10 builds worked just fine. How I fixed it I cannot remember. It has been some years. And ofc MSI doesn't update anything because it is an way outdated board.

Wow. Great story. I'm a bit surprised trying a video card swap out wasn't higher on your trouble shooting list. It is a reasonably simple operation, a hell of a lot easier than trying a new PSU. And I would have thought someone who makes a living as you do would have a spare, old, or extra card available to do that with. Alas, live and learn I guess. I think it would be pretty impossible for any of us to accurately deduce what the actual problem was, but I'd be willing to put my bet on a failing GPU, even if was only six months old.

First mistake is not having spare parts to swap in and out of your PC to check individual parts for issues. I have a slew of older PSU's, HDD's, GPU's, RAM, etc. I would suggest downloading a 2D platformer and seeing if the problem persists. If it does, try removing your GPU and running off of onboard graphics. Because it sounds like your GPU is malfunctioning. Were it your PSU, you would likely get some sort physical indication, i.e, smoke ,sparks and even the damn things explodes - had it happen once.

  • @dudepool458

Dude your card is not new. You card propably was give back to shop as fault unit. And they put new bios and "baked" your card in oven (this can make dying card with cold solder joint to give 6 months or more to live) - and sold as new. I know, it's 1080ti, so it's 2yo card. However - it was really popular for crypto currency mining! So I could work 24/7 for months without proper coolers and with dust - and it may cause damagin your GPU. So, first check series number from card sticked to box. If it matchs - register your card on evega. Then go to shop you bought and and ask for full refund. Even if you made reflash with correct bios - you still may have solder joint issue - so that's the reason of lack of preformance and card trying chase it by taking more power.
Card never should hit critical power usage when is healthy! Your card is refurbish card, and propably it killed your psu aswell. If I you have option go and borrow some card and run all benchmakrs and games on borrowred card (don't have to be so powerfull as gtx1080ti, just powerfull enough to run poe and other games). If you don't have frame drops - its your "new" card.
However your discord issue bothers me, so I would check borrowed GPU on old and new ram. But i don't think it ram fault, usally when ram is damaged or you run out of ram - games don't drop frames like that, you will get 1-5 secound freeze.
Ps. If possible give full specifisation on your system - and I you would like to, e-mail me. I can try help you out by e-mails or discord :)

GPU is easy to test, as most modern processors come with a built-in GFX-card. So if it works with that, but not with your "real" GFX-card, then you have your answer. That happened to me, one week before Blight release. In my case though, I had a completely black screen and a GFX-card which smelled like BBQ, which was kind of a strong hint.

    • @Tomminocka
      @Tomminocka 5 лет назад +1

just to enhance this topic (i'm from germany, so no native english, sorry): Discord nowadays has the option to "go live", in fact to stream. It maybe the root cause. Discord will reserve some of your hardware "ressources" in case you want to stream (fps cap at 85). Maybe you can check, if it is possible to disable the "stream functionality" from discord. Otherwise replace your grafic card. I had a similar issue with one of my former gpu's from nvidia. any time i started a game, i got a black screen and my pc crashed. it was due to my new gpu. i sent it back to the seller and they repaired it. After it came back, it occured again. So it went back again and they again repaired it. That time the gpu finally worked.

I started running into weird graphics hang ups, getting black screens, etc. Figured it was my card shitting out (Sapphire Nitro r9 390) so I bought a new card which was failing to even post. Figured I might not be having hardware but it was driver issues. Did a system reinstall of the OS and reinstalled the drivers manually. This fixed the issue and the new card posted.
Your adventures make me feel for you, it's so frustrating.
Sounds like you're getting some kind of fucky driver issue.
Edit: the no signal problem with the monitor was also a symptom of my issues so you're almost certainly hitting driver problems. see if you can clean everything and reinstall some older versions of drivers. also, I reapplied my cpu thermal paste, which has given me issues before (probably not in your case since you don't get temperature spikes).

i am probably a bit late but here is my 2 cents. Nvidia manufactures only one chip that goes into all the gforce cards, the only difference is that if it has defective parts they cut that part off litteraly at the atomic level ( there are videos about how they do it) and just sell the gpu as a lower serie one as the chip is now less powerfull so it fits for a less powerfull and less expensive card yet they dont have to discard the entire chip since even only half of it can do for a good 1060 for example. with that in mind i dont think the gpu bios was "wrong" expecially cuz it ran for 6 months, it was just installed to give a better preset to the gpu as the example you proposed for overclocking.
my best guess would be that as you said shit happens and thats why we have warranties on items such as pc parts, and i think the gpu just broke. but as the rule goes, if nothing happens in the first 3 monts, anything should happen for 3 years. at the beginning of my IT studies i thought that was bs but i can now confirm there is some truth XD only difference is that if nothing happens after 3 years it just last forever, as an old 280 i still have around can confirm lol.
my second best guess is that the shitty glue you found fused on cables it didnt look to be supposed to be there actually caused (or was caused) but a short that then fried something in the gpu at least partially.
my general advice tho is that if you have spare parts and you are not struggling to the end of the month, keep them instead of making 100$ more. i mean, if you have a card that is worth 500$ ofc sell it, but if you have rather cheap parts that will cost you a day or two to arrange the meeting, drive to a place and have to deal with a cheap dude trying to skim off 20$ on a 1$ purchase just avoid doing so and keep the part that you know works but you may just be replacing for the sole reason of upgrading. that will allow you to build up a good collecion of working parts that will help you figure out what is going wrong in your pc, as in your case an old but still working gpu would have allowed you to just swap it in and see if that was the issue or not, and maybe carrying you through the time it takes to get the new one checked in and returned to you.
wish you good luck and let us know =)

Most common is harddrive/ssd issues but it can be difficult finding what is causing the problem. Some programs I use to monitor that everything is ok:
CrystalDiskInfo for harddrive/ssd info. Intuitive and tells you emmidietly if something is corrupt or broken. Found out my old harddrive was broken this way after experiencing ever decreasing performance. Bought a new one and everything was fine again.
HWMonitor or HWInfo gives you alot of info about basically everything, temps, fan speed, memory, voltages etc.
RealTemp shows gpu and cpu temperatures, can have it always visible in taskbar.

Should have brought it to a PC store. The first thing we do is replace each hardware piece and test the performance. Would have discovered it was your video card much sooner and definitively. But there is value in the learning experience and trying it for yourself. As for the fault in the video card, it's hard to say but having a different bios is a bit weird and suspect. You should write down some of the numbers on the card and chips and punch it in to google. May give you more info to verify the authenticity of the card.
