Fratello Talks: Cut The Excuses And Just Enjoy Watches

  • Excuses, excuses, excuses... Letting them get in the way of a good thing is a shame. So it's time to cut them out and enjoy watches. This is this week's topic of discussion, which Nacho, Lex, and RJ explore in detail. It's an interesting phenomenon that we've observed lately. A new watch is announced, and out pour the single-phrase comments providing personal justification for a lack of intention to purchase. It all results in a rather dull, nasty, and repetitive rabbit hole of cynicism. But why does this happen? Is it a FOMO-induced face-saving reaction? Does it have more to do with how information is shared online? Or is it just the nature of online comments? And can't we just cut it out and enjoy watches regardless?

Many thanks for the beautiful therapy episode.
I love observing beautiful watches and other beautiful creations. I don't feel the passion to buy it . The desire to buy one day is doing it for me . I am so happy with my existing collection, which covers all kinds of beauty.
    With great appreciation

Today, Lex & R J are sporting the Fratello standard issue stone sweatshirt ( although RJ is pulling rank with Stone Island ) & Nacho has gone rogue - it's crazy.

Interesting viewpoint… but in all fairness with the steep price rises I think it’s fair that consumers expect more from their purchases since these are luxury items.

Agree. Like it or not there is a watch brand hierarchy. That coupled with the outrageous prices in the last few yrs you pt out (IWC and the Ingenieur, looking at you) no one should be shocked that many reject otherwise solid watches.

I think a lot of excuses stem from the desire to find the “perfect” watch, we we all know doesn’t exist. So we make excuses so that we don’t feed the desire to buy the latest and greatest hype watch. A lot of this is driven by social media, but also the brands themselves, who spend millions on advertising in order to make money, which proves that it’s successful when we buy, flip, sell these hype watches. Like RJ, I too “sowed my horological oats” (as Nacho puts it) as I learned about watches and my styles, finally settling on one great piece (Moonwatch). And while I’ll admit it’s near perfect “for me” (as YoureTerrific puts it), there are many more watches I’d like to experience in the decades to come. Price being the most difficult obstacle being a military family man. I agree with all your points! Cheers gents and thank you!

"Hard Pass" is such a trite comment. And so often it's about specs & a write-up. OK, maybe you hate date windows. But what if the watch is so great on your wrist that you don't care? Your discussion towards the end about staying positive is spot on. It makes me happy if a watch I dislike or can't pull off looks great on someone else & brings them joy. For that watch, my fun comes from appreciating their enthusiasm.

I have to agree about the white dial Speedy over the Snoopy Speedy. I'd take the former for sure.

I was one of those guys who thought anything under 42mm was too small. I have larger, 7.5” wrists but recently discovered 40 and 41mm watches fit well. I have a couple of 50mm watches as well. My most recent purchase is the 41mm Aqua terra and I love it (my 60th b’day gift to myself)

My biggest pet pieve is when people say a watch is overpriced or it doesn't have micro adjustment. As far as the micro adjustment that would rule out almost every watch made before 2000 so it's like calling all those watches bad. A brand decides what they think their product is worth not the consumer. Just look at another watch and don't act like the company has to bribe you to buy something.

I got the snoopy discontinued email. Glad to hear it’s not discontinued. I have one already (from a boutique two years ago). The Craig white is less cartoonish (literally) so it is better in a business setting. I just got my Craig White, they’ll make more of it so just be patient (don’t feed the scalpers asking $12k for it).

The QUOTE from TIM VAUX, is just a chapter from the most wide extended QUOTE which is applied in all areas of live "Perfection is the enemy of Good". Try to make it perfect and you will never enjoy Good things.

I really appreciate this episode. I would think that as people get older they also get wiser. I was one to have some strong opinions on watches that didn’t appeal to me, but then I realized all tastes are subjective and who was I to judge. I still prefer watches that are thinner and more minimal, but can absolutely appreciate (and welcome) a novel design that takes a risk.

Great dialogue. Spec snobs are one of the few sad parts of our hobby.
You’re ‘go try it on, you might be surprised’ is true - but you gentlemen have easier access to watches we non-industry people don’t. But that does bring up a potential new idea for a video: the watch you wanted to love but when you did try it on, realized it just wasn’t made for your wrist.

Thank you for the reminder! Yes, I absolutely agree that we can - and should - discover and experience a (new) watch without having to first consider the price. I dare say that even if I had loads of money, it would only dampen my appreciation and my enthusiasm for a watch. Keep up the good work 🙋🏻‍♂️

Yes but sometimes a pet peeve is justified. For example, I don’t like chronographs that combine complications in a sub register. Too often, the two hands are too similar and when it’s in a small sub register telling them apart is annoying. The older you get, the more annoying poor legibility gets.

There is definitely a problem with watch snobbery and indeed brand snobbery. Well, all product purchasing is down to individual taste regardless of the product. If it doesn’t resonate, then don’t buy it. Simple really.

Great episode. You could generalise your criticisms to the BTL comments under articles on pretty much any topic.

I don’t really get this topic. Are we gatekeeping opinions? There is so much projection, speculation, and reaching here particularly with who the commenters are in the watch community.
There are trolls everywhere (topic, platform), and there is normal discourse from the masses. This topic is quite silly, or maybe you guys need to spend more time in places where better conversations around watches are taking place.

If you like a watch, try the watch (regardless of size, jug length etc) and you just might find that you would like it. Then if you can justify the price then consider a purchase. You should not care what other (anti) social media posters think about it as it's you who will be wearing the watch. And let's face it the vast majority of people won't even notice it. Many thanks for sharing.

I wonder if some of the pressure around feeling like you have to have an excuse comes more on the ADs when you go and check stuff out!
How many times have you made to feel like you’re wasting a salesperson’s time when you’re checking out a few models in an empty boutique with no other customers there?
They have targets, I get it but I do think that always having to have a reason to say no comes into it
