I liked being part of the band but I thought that if I missed this chance now, it would just become even more delayed. So I started preparing and in 2014, I recorded everything and released my album. BYG: I see it as a big challenge that you took because you were comfortable playing the guitar, but being a vocalist wasn’t as familiar to you. I’m sure you had to put in a lot of effort. But because of that effort, such hit songs were able to be released.

I had already made up my mind to pursue music but school was getting in the way. So I dropped out, got my GED, and applied to college and by luck, managed to get accepted early. BYG: You went in a year earlier? JJ: In 2006, I was a freshman and when I first arrived on campus, it was exactly what I had pictured. My peers were just as bright-eyed. We moved from class to class to the different lectures by my professors and stayed up all night in the practice room. Thinking back, everything made me so happy. Granted, as a student, I was still being thrown left and right by the schedule and overwhelmed by it all, so it was still hard but when I look back, that was the time when I was able to overcome everything by the sheer love I had for music. I thought to myself that there wasn’t a more innocent time that I was just happy to be playing. That’s where I came up with this song. With my earphones plugged in, replaying them over and over, not wanting to go to sleep just yet. BYG: That night feels like a dream. JJ: I’m much more familiar with matching myself to others so that’s what I try to do the best I can. But there are definitely times when as a person, you can’t match yourself to the other all the time.
BYG: As a man, Jung Jaewon, what is the meaning of love?
JJ: It’s not as hard as you would think. I think of it like this. For example, you know how we have the “hard” words, like happiness. If you use happiness as a heavy word, it gets infinitely heavier but just like there’s also that trend of small, simple happiness, I think me along with a lot of people find that happiness is much closer than we think. Up until a couple of years ago, love was like that for me and I was worrying about these things. Am I really in love? Do I really love this person? Am I receiving love? But if you think about it, just like happiness, in simpler terms, you can give and take lightly and still think of that as love.
BYG: Divorce, too… It’s not something that you have to be so serious about. You meet people, you leave people. It can happen to anyone. It’s something that can happen to me. These days, they even have programs about it. ‘Divorced Singles’ or something like that.
JGY: No, those people are,,, are old.
BYG: Their shoulders are so down.
JJ: Marriage and divorce are simple…are they simpler than we think?
BYG: When it really matters, you have to listen to the woman. If you try to win, absolute catastrophe.
JJ: I’ll keep that in mind.

JJ: Other than that, every day is the same. Still skipping breakfast, I start my day stopping by a coffee shop. It’s strange these days, I’ve got a lot on my mind. People say I’ve gotten too sensitive. Love is still too hard. I’m spending the day on my phone, looking at all the old pictures. It makes even less sense because I know myself; I’m finding myself looking back several times a day. Seeing myself like this, I think I finally understand I’m still back in that place, still back where I used to be.
