Thanks Linus for finally doing it. I was torn between the new Macbook Pro and XPS 15 and I think I finally will buy XPS just for the sake for usability and occasional gaming. I am still wondering how fast the SSD is in XPS compared to Macbook Pro.
Hey, Linus, 1 question. Does this include a built in rectifier, i.e. can you run this directly off the wall by removing the battery? This used to be possible on older models, but I haven't seen it as of late. It's a necessity for a desktop replacement that's only going to be lugged around occasionally for presentations et al, because of the battery is needed to run, then it means all your power comes through the battery, resulting in the last cell using up its charge-discharge cycles very quickly, and before you know it you only have 70% of the battery capacity that you used to have a few months ago.

this is the updated version of the pc build thx for all the help! if there are any more adjustment i should make, dont be afraid to tell me! pcpartpicker.com/list/hyDHKZ
Shave a couple dollars off your power supply by choosing a budget power supply from a reputable brand like EVGA or Corsair. It'll allow you to buy a better graphics card, because the one you selected is over 2 generations old but was also a low-budget card even then.
Get a Ryzen R5 1500X or R5 1600. Don't buy Ryzen R5 1400. Get a good B350 motherboard. Get a GTX 1050 Ti or a RX 470 or wait for RX 570. If you game a lot, get 16 GB or DDR4 3200Mhz RAM. Get an SSD (250GB is good but at least get 125 GB). Get an IPS display monitor like this one: www.amazon.com/Asus-VS239H-P-23-Inch-1920x1080-Back-lit/dp/B008DWITHI/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=thtebusgu-20&linkCode=w00&linkId=3E3V7X2CJFCUJ5DR&creativeASIN=B008DWITHI
You didn't seem to talk much about performance tho. It would be beneficial if you could say what applications have you tested on this machine and how the laptop handled. How did you handle multitasking heavy applications like Photoshop and video editing? or something like that.
Look, I get the whole portability piece, but come on: for $2000 you could spend $600 on a laptop with good battery life and a fast SSD, and then take the remaining $1400 and build a decent gaming PC and get a good 4k monitor to go with it. $1000+ laptops don't make sense unless you're rich, imo.
Thuazabi - That's true. You can get and Inspiron 2-in-1 with similar specs for a lot less. I'm upgrading and have upgraded a couple of my laptops for a lot less cause I like to tinker a bit. However... I've tested the Inspiron and XPS 15 side by side and the user experience on the XPS 15 is a much, much better. It just makes you want to use it and that's what you pay extra for. Yes, it's too pricey for me so I'm just waiting for the price to come down or wait for a refurbished one to become available. I told a friend of mine that if I ever win lotto I'll just get one of each, but I have to buy a ticket first. lol
More expensive ones will last longer (hopefully). I bought a $600 for my brother for his birthday and it turned out to be the biggest piece of crap I ever bought
Dear Linus, I love watching your videos. And the fact that you include your wife and kids is very endearing brother. I will always watch your videos man. Thanks for being a tech guy and also showing that as technical men we can also have our priorities in the right place. You are super cool bro. God bless you.
I purchased my XPS 15 9560 about 2 weeks ago. Its the same as your reveiw unit but has the fingerprint reader. Unfortunately for me, the 97Whr battery became unservicable after a bios update. The experiance with Dell customer service and the lack of parts avalible for the laptop have ment that i can not use my laptop for 2 weeks as i wait for parts. Happy with the machine when it is working. Just dissapointed its been broken almost as long as its been working ;(
Honest owners opinion: do not buy the xps 15. I do not know why so many reviewers give such positive reviews to this laptop. It's full of problems and not at all worth the amount of money that it costs. What I think it boils down to is poor quality control on these laptops. Sure they look good with their semi aluminum bodies but they come with loads of issues. Lemme just list the ones that mine has: half the touchscreen stops working randomly and forces a restart. Creeky and crackly opening of the lid, worst and buggiest BIOS that I've ever seen, the resolution is fine but with scaling so many programs and software don't support it and are therefore illegible. Trackpad is not flush with the surface of the laptop it's crooked, gesture controls and palm rejection are extremely buggy and therefore more of a pain than helpful. However the battery is increadibly long I'll say that. All in all if you really want to spend the money on that kind of laptop just get a mac and boot it with windows oem. Or just buy a different laptop.
Anecdote after anecdote after anecdote. I have an XPS 15 and it works great. A couple of bugs, but the next best thing is a MacBook that costs 1k more and doesn't have the software I need. Dell do need to up their quality control, but the reality is that most people who buy these laptops wont face these problems. And due to there being no real alternatives, the XPS 15 is still the best all round laptop around.
I purchased my XPS 15 3560 Signature Edition 4 weeks ago at the Microsoft Store in Atlanta. It's fully loaded with Windows 10 Pro, 32 GB Memory, 1 Terabyte SSD, and of course that incredible Infinity Edge 4K 3840 x 2160 screen. I use it for Microsoft Windows software development using Visual Studio 2017, photography using Adobe Photoshop/Lightroom CC, and 4K video editing with DaVinci Resolve Studio. It's my daily driver and I think I would qualify as a heavy user. I've had no problems of any kind and my honest opinion is that it's the best laptop I've ever owned.
GetDookied, I've purchased my last 5 computers at the Microsoft Store and I always add the Microsoft Complete warranty. For my XPS 15 9560 I added 4 years of Microsoft Complete for an additional $249. I'm covered for "anything" that could go wrong including accidental damage! If you add Microsoft Complete, the Microsoft Store will immediately swap out machines from store inventory on-the-spot. I'm completely covered.
Mark im not talking about resolution but color and contrast ratio, which is essential of the graphics works I do. And so 4K isn't a fucking branding? Especially when windows sucks at scaling at this nonsense resolution for a laptop. Get your shit together
how does it compare to the razer blade? dimensions are virtually the same (xps only very slightly longer). the XPS has the larger screen while the rb has the better gpu.
It isn't for gaming... That money is going into a stellar warranty, frame, build quality, screen, ect. The 1050 isn't there for the gamer, it is there for the creative professional, who the XPS series is made for.
if ur looking for a good cheap gaming laptop get the dell inspiron 15 7567 gaming, it’s really good for the price $850 for a gtx1050ti and an i5-7300 2.5ghz (3.5ghz superclock) and 8gb ram and a 256gb ssd
mo101epic pure idiots buy this laptop for strict gaming. If they feel this way because of this desire for ultimate performance, then a gaming laptop from gigabyte or Razer is a perfect substitute.
If I remember right, the thunderbolt 3 port only has 2 PCIE lanes, so there will be a larger performance penalty for eGPU's compared to other laptops with 4 PCIE lanes backing the port. I also kinda prefer numpad less keyboards so they are centred in the body and not forcing you to lean left.
Well, this review officially made up my mind. I've been looking for a replacement for my aging MacBook Air and I had it narrowed down to the 4k version of this and the Surface Book with performance base but this video has led me to choose the XPS 15.

3:38 678 fps in gta v wtf lmfao
67.8 i guess? then again why would you add 0.8 to your fps still im guessing its 67.8 since the bar goes up to 70
stop stroking the laptop please, it isn't a sex toy!
joost van den Berg well it has a screen lol ;)
Can it run cs go?
yes
no the screen response is too slow.
what a troll hahaha
This laptop throttles like crazy. Look for 7590 with full VRM heatsink cover on the GPU.
What was the external graphics card device you showed in the beginning, is it Razor?
I own it. only issue is the speakers are absolutely horrendous. constant crackling
i read if you go into the speaker driver software you can adjust the settings and it sounds incredibly better. Im getting mine tommorow, if this is true ill tell you :)
well...?
lol
"if this is true ill tell you". since he hasnt told him anything ill assume the whatever he read was wrong
How is the fan noise on your laptop? My fan seems like it's always running, even when the computer isn't connected to the internet or running any programs. The computer is rarely even quiet, and if I run any application whatsoever, the fan turns on
Should've compared it to the Macbook Pro.
The MalWare what _can't_ beat a Macbookpro tbh xd
mac using last years hardware, so something 2 years old
+The Barbaric Broneh lol exactly, its not even a joke now how much apple's macs have fallen behind
BRYAN SIV I bought the Mac because back then the Mac had cost 1799 for the top of the line model and OSX was superior to windows 7. NOW the same machine cost 2700! and windows 10 is really good! and Macs don't have better build quailty. its the same now if not worst.
this is the updated version of the pc build thx for all the help! if there are any more adjustment i should make, dont be afraid to tell me! pcpartpicker.com/list/hyDHKZ
I don't know honestly. Leave that up the pros!
Why no Kaby lake or Ryzen 5?
Get an IPS display monitor like this one: www.amazon.com/Asus-VS239H-P-23-Inch-1920x1080-Back-lit/dp/B008DWITHI/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=thtebusgu-20&linkCode=w00&linkId=3E3V7X2CJFCUJ5DR&creativeASIN=B008DWITHI
do not pay 100+ bucks for windows. you can buy a key for 20-30 bucks online. Also ips monitor if you stick to 60hz
You didn't seem to talk much about performance tho. It would be beneficial if you could say what applications have you tested on this machine and how the laptop handled. How did you handle multitasking heavy applications like Photoshop and video editing? or something like that.
You didn't mention about the TB3 port being only 2 lanes instead of 4 lanes. Is it really compatible with the Razer Core (or any external GPU)?
Now leave it out in the rain
Look, I get the whole portability piece, but come on: for $2000 you could spend $600 on a laptop with good battery life and a fast SSD, and then take the remaining $1400 and build a decent gaming PC and get a good 4k monitor to go with it. $1000+ laptops don't make sense unless you're rich, imo.
Thuazabi True, but I go traveling a lot and a pc where I can edit videos and play games on is really convenient. :)
I told a friend of mine that if I ever win lotto I'll just get one of each, but I have to buy a ticket first. lol
I already have a good desktop, why would I get a cheap laptop if I can afford a better one?
More expensive ones will last longer (hopefully). I bought a $600 for my brother for his birthday and it turned out to be the biggest piece of crap I ever bought
Only 4.5 hours so ?
Gary Coombs idk quality control seems to be pretty bad maybe you got lucky or haven’t owned it for very long yet
GetDookied,
I've purchased my last 5 computers at the Microsoft Store and I always add the Microsoft Complete warranty.
Kalcifer
678 FPS in GTA V lol
normal right?
No it's not look at the bottom it shows around 60-70 a very bad typo
efe bayrakceken 67.8
schenkov oo it's right on the line
+efe bayrakceken naaaahhhh, 1050 should easly get 678 fps amaright?
2x the price = "little bit more"
k
Ibra M Not understanding sarcasm.

Great video. With the size of the screen is there really much difference between 4k and 1080p?
I have one, but with a 1080p screen. It's nice but I find the screen has some motion blur when gaming, which isn't so pleasant.
Op, plz nerf
the Dell XPS 15 is the best laptop unless you want to get a macbook pro and use apple's own professional software.
MythicalReaper wrong
Mark the MacBook pro may be the priciest but no other laptop can beat it. if you want a desktop, build one
No other laptop can beat it? Do you want this comment thread to be filled with a list?
If he means by the build quality, then he is mostly right. Performance-wise, obviously not. But build quality is a big deal. Great second hand laptop.
well the outdated specs of the 2016 are a little bit of a joke along with the buggy touchbar and dissapointing battery.
2000$ and same specs as the 2016 15' MacBook Pro. But macs are overpriced... right?
SweBass You pay for the screen and form factor of a 13ish inch laptop.
The XPS has a significantly better GPU compared to the MacBook
they are both 15inches and the macbook pro has one of the best screens on the market.
SweBass it has better specs then the most expensive mac in every way. There's literally no comparison to the mac...
Super choppy 4k playback @ 1:58 ?
$2000 for a laptop with a GTX 1050? Fucking Garbage.
It isn't for gaming... That money is going into a stellar warranty, frame, build quality, screen, ect. The 1050 isn't there for the gamer, it is there for the creative professional, who the XPS series is made for.
you are as bad as those people who buy a xeon or mac for gaming.
if ur looking for a good cheap gaming laptop get the dell inspiron 15 7567 gaming, it’s really good for the price $850 for a gtx1050ti and an i5-7300 2.5ghz (3.5ghz superclock) and 8gb ram and a 256gb ssd
At least it's better than the garbage Radeon 455 (2500$) or the 460 (3000$) in the more garbage Macbooks.
mo101epic pure idiots buy this laptop for strict gaming. If they feel this way because of this desire for ultimate performance, then a gaming laptop from gigabyte or Razer is a perfect substitute.
I have the XPS L502X. Bought it in 2011! Still works like a charm and even runs most of today's games on medium graphics!
Can I downscale 4k to 1080p in windows? will it improve battery life?
If I remember right, the thunderbolt 3 port only has 2 PCIE lanes, so there will be a larger performance penalty for eGPU's compared to other laptops with 4 PCIE lanes backing the port.
I also kinda prefer numpad less keyboards so they are centred in the body and not forcing you to lean left.
Well, this review officially made up my mind.
I've been looking for a replacement for my aging MacBook Air and I had it narrowed down to the 4k version of this and the Surface Book with performance base but this video has led me to choose the XPS 15.
What about the Lenovo Yoga 710 or upcoming 720?
Linus, how has the dell been doing? Any problems? I’ve been hearing that there’s a lot of quality issues with these laptops. Mine, ( 9550) won’t even post! I even did the battery work around to see if it was the battery but it’s DED!
the keyboard key made with low quality I've been replacing few keys so far, the key get cracked into half. the battery swelling and pull up slightly the touchpad. using xps 9550 for a year now.
I bought it last week in a Microsoft Store. Audio improves enabling an option in the Maxx Audio app
Can the 1080p version handle having a 4k resolution extra display attached to it? Or does this not work?
It seems like the GTX 1050 has a hard time running the 4k display. Would lowering the resolution make things run smoother?
Audio quality on headphones? How does it compare to MacBook Pro?
What if you turn off the touchscreen, how much power does it save then?
It's great to have a tech channel out here that does detailed review and takes itself seriously enough to care, but still makes a joke every now and then, no matter how cheesy! (2:00) It's also great that you justify everything you comment on. Keep up the good work guys!
What windows service did you disable to help with the WiFi issues if you don't mind me asking?
does the Dell XPS 15 ac adapter from USA work in Europe? Is it 130-240w?
which Windows service did you disable for the wifi problem? I'm having this issue with my Lenovo.
That Bezel less Screen WOW!! Playing games with that screen is a dream come true
The Dbrand affiliate link isn't working..
Do the 1080p version also have a touch display?
