it's a virtual band because it's not a real band. Damon Albarn works with different folks on each album and usually guest folks on each single. The touring lineup has changed considerably too. The cartoon band is what gives the project continuity.
imo Albarn's songwriting is a bit hit and miss at times, but the production of the the Gorillaz music and albums is consistently superb.
I really liked your reactions to this one. It's one of my personal favorite albums. It's just so well crafted and never gets old. Damon really put a lot of hard work into it.
Thank you ❤️🤟🙏🤟❤️
34:05 Damon Albarn is 1/2 of Gorillaz, and the sole constant in musical contribution. He was the frontman of Blur yes, a Britpop band. Gorillaz is an attempt to free himself of the Brit boy band restrictions- more specifically when Damon and Jamie were watching MTV. Jamie said "If you watch MTV for too long, it's a bit like hell- there's nothing of substance there. So we got an idea for a virtual band, something that would comment on that".
The other half is this Jamie Hewlett, a comic artist who was the flatmate of Damon and handled the visuals from character design to a lot of the MV work. So it functions as a virtual band, Jamie and (especially) Damon wanting to present the music as the characters' doing and not necessarily their own.
The fictional world of the group is fascinating, going through 6 'phases' with character changes. As a young(er) teenager this is the aspect that drawn me into Gorillaz - cheeky bastards, that's exactly what Damon and Jamie wanted. Demon Days was an album about kids, not necessarily for kids, but Damon's spoke of it as being really cool to not have to associate his previous works and a monolithic celebrity to Gorillaz . Kids tend to buy into the fiction and not care about the creators, therefore when someone was slagging off Gorillaz saying it's a 'f-in kid's band' he found it pretty cool someone would say that.
Feel Good Inc really hones into that hatred for manufactured music. Gorillaz (and by extension its creators) have displayed just how crap they think celebrities, TV music talent shows, manufactured pop, and brain-dumbing media is. On the rest of Demon Days there's the ideas of desensitising kids to violence, the Iraq war, ecological damage... Heck, the characters in one 'phase' live in a building surrounded by brain dead zombies and during the album 'plastic beach' they live on an island of plastic.
Most of the time now I'm just here to enjoy the music. But the world these creators have created is so interesting and close to our own and dedicated fans can get a glimpse of it with animated MVs, interviews of Gorillaz on talk shows and radios which are often the characters instead if the creators, Twitter DMs with the characters... Of course, the creators use the fiction to reinstate their values. Back when Demon Days was booming worldwide in '05 ish (espec. nationally in good ol UK) the characters spread the message of 'Reject False Icons' and encouraged fans to spread the word with graffiti.
Thank you for this reaction. A real nostalgia trip - a universally critically acclaimed album and one of my favourites.
Wow that was long 😅
I'd love a Gorillaz self titled album reaction, though I realise your time might be limited! Was their first album and not as solid imo as their more recent stuff (Demon Days is the ultimate album though) but very interesting regardless. Checking the MVs might be good for your free time if you'd like a cool visual . On DDs Dirty Harry, Feel Good Inc, El Manana and Dare have animated MVs.
Ty for watching and that amazing info
the translation of "El Mañana" would be "The future" or "tomorrow"
LA mañana = the morning
EL mañana = the future
futuro is future
Tomorrow would be a better translation!
“Kids with Guns”
“They’re my favorite kind…”
Lol that made me laugh 😭🤣
😄
@@WelpHereWeAreOnRUclips This was a great video. Definitely had to subscribe! I see most comments are opting for you guys to listen to the plastic beach album by Gorillaz and I have to agree!
Ty❤️❤️
The way don’t get lost in heaven perfectly flows into demon days gives me chills every time.
Wow full album reaction. I'm intrigued
great reaction guys. You should really watch the music videos for these and maybe do a reaction. can you guys react to their 3rd studio album called plastic beach? I think you guys will find it SUPER interesting and that album has two of my favorite songs of ALL time on there even though demon days is my favorite.
Great vid, would love to see a reaction to Gorillaz Plastic Beach - widely considered to be a better follow-up.

You guys should react to the Self title album!
Nice sample in the intro
Dicen que este álbum contiene en cada canción las armas para luchar contra 13 demonios por eso en los títulos se puede ver que se refiere a cosas específicas. Es algo descabellado es una teoría de la comunidad
What is that canadian musician "chaos" that he mentions? Anyone know?
k-os
Gorrilaz is my favorite band, ive decided to dress something like them
The album was from 2005... come on.. that's not a boomer thing. You just weren't exposed to it (maybe too young even to have appreciated it, not sure about your ages 17 years ago) . PS: Watch the video for Feel Good after on their channel.
Would’ve been cool to see their reaction to realizing it’s Damon albarn
👍🏻
Damon Albarn (of Blur-fame) is one of the leading figures behind this. I have to admit though, I've never really warmed up to Gorillaz.
gasses running through shoals and rocks for millions of years where they were put open them and frack and mine the gasses for our own personal use that's not gonna come back and bite us in the ass 🤪

Music is probably the art that has the most misconceptions in terms of the consumers, my personal favorite is the idea of being born talented, like no talent is passion applied. Years and years of practice, trial and error, finding out years down the line that you learned a whole lot of bad habits, having to relearn things and finding out that things that seemed impossible before is actually not as difficult now.
Any creative process is learned, the problem is that most people give up before they spend a decade drawing lines and circles, or sat alone in their room with a DAW, or an instrument, or annoyed the shit out of everyone around them by belting and sounding less than great. The whole "real instruments vs. synths" is a lot like the arguement between pizzicato (fingerstyle) vs. pick on bass, and the answer is the same, different strokes for different folks, or rather different strokes for different genres.
Also, Gorillaz did something like 50/50 real instrumentation and synth/production, drums with triggers were also used. A lot of the real instrumentation was recorded by members from Blur, and guesting musicians.
I like the saying "A master has failed more times than a beginner has tried."
Every Gorillaz album is a concept album
Even Song Machine? It felt like a bunch of great singles but not much cohesion. Also feel kinda the same with Cracker Island
That style of beat you’re trying to think of in “All Alone” is drum & bass/jungle
You should react to their self titled album or plastic beach!
dare is a great song, it’s a terrible song sang live lmao
I have flashbacks to that performance
@@agguwaggu at least shaun was having a fun time lmao
@@cranid98 yeah he seemed happy
damon albarn is a very musical person, he has gorillaz, blur, the good the bad & the queen, and he does solo work too
Yall gotta peep MF DOOM if you haven't yet. He is known as your favorite rappers favorite rapper for a reason. His skill is unmatched. Only Aesop Rock can come close imo.
This album is a masterpiece
Demon Days is the 2000’s dark side of the moon
The arpeggio on kids with guns is the best ive ever heard
