Lamborghini V12 engine rebuild. Part 2, stripping the engine

- The engine in my Lamborghini Espada isn't well, it started losing cooling water when we were on the Lamborghini Espada 50th tour last September and it's time for an engine rebuild. That's why I took it up to Iain Tyrell's mega workshop www.iaintyrrel... near Chester a few weeks ago and here, he starts stripping the engine.

It's quite amazing how 21 minutes feel like 5 without resorting to stupid stunts, loud voices, flashy cars and women. Huge fan of Harry since the EVO days, even bigger fan now.
Indeed.
And all without starting it off with 'What is up guys'. Actually, I wouldn't have watched it if it had.
true, bar none my favorite car channel.
No gimmicks, just quality content. I quite agree. (Said with a British accent of course)
No straight bill hats and cans of redbull or monster everywhere. No cursing trying to be funny when taking the heads off. Just classic work. This reminds me when I went on a Porsche factory tour and you seen guys having a beer while working.
Extreeeeemly interesting. And again, the mechanic talks like a doctor. Great!
He's getting paid like one.
He is a doctor, an engine doctor. Imagine Average Joe working on such an engine...
@@aserta Nothing wrong with average Joe, some of them are very resourceful.
He speaks like a doctor not talk's like a doctor's. Slight grammatical error infoaddict
I've got a guy that services my Defender that's just like that. Really knows his stuff. I know if he needs to do something to my car it actually needs to be done.
Amazing to see the inside of an Italian masterpiece of engineering. Can't wait to see the next update. Thanks Harry
What strikes me about this vid--beyond its excellence--is that mechanics like these must be a dying breed. Hard to imagine that there will be that many like him in 20 years that tear down and rebuild an old-school V-12.
Watching a couple of English gentlemen stripping a Lamborghini V12 is my new favourite thing. My only complaint is the video doesn't last for hours.
A Webcam installed above the car with livestream :-)
Yes very enjoyable all the secrets of the old V12
Confirmed .
It's only problem is that it ends.
Seemed a very quick 21 minutes!
Two incredibly well spoken English gentlemen at that. Shortest 21 minutes ever.
Being a 60 year old self taught petrolhead from the states, I can't tell you how much I enjoy this type of content. Simply brilliant Harry. Thanks
Being a 61year old self taught petrolhead from England, I can tell you how much i enjoyed this too!
Heart warming to know this level of skill and attention to detail still exists, a joy to watch.
10 out of 10. Great video. The Garage Guys are fabulous. Nice stuff, Harry. Love the little humorous asides.
That engine is a work of art
I was absolutely mesmerised with this video
Never thought I see a tear down of a lambo v12 !👍🏻👍🏻
Perfect commentary: 6:13
Harry: "And we wear nice watches 'cause we want to know what time it is. Don't we?"
Iain: (Looks at watch) "We do, yes!"
"You lead a charmed life, Mr Metcalfe"
This video was really good, Harry. I didn't think I'd ever see a 60s Lamborghini engine being torn down and rebuilt, much less an in depth view into how it's aged and worn. Thank you.
You can certainly see why these cars were so expensive. What a piece of engineering. As you say Harry, the sump is a piece of art. As usual, brilliant to watch. Thanks so much Harry.
Hooked at every moment. I love hearing the history behind the engines development and consideration given during design and disassembly, fantastic. Wish I was part of this world!
Amazing video, thank you Harry!
I’m guessing I can’t afford the hourly rate for these guys, but it’s a pleasure to watch them work so methodically.
I was holding my breath the whole time! I've pulled heads off and pistons out and found horror shows. To quote Monty Python,"You lucky, lucky bastard!".
Great to watch Harry. Reminds me of doing exactly the same 25 years ago when I stripped down my Stag V8 that was using too much water. Found a partial blown gasket between a waterway and bore. Cleaned everything up, renewed the head gaskets and the engine ran beautifully for the remaining 6 years I owned it. Still loving all your content.
Rob Ingleby oh my, I love the Stag, grew up in Devon and they were a popular drive for the country set there, such an elegant car with an amazing engine. Congratulations on owning such a fine car.
Just think about it people.... Most Automotive RUclipsrs are uploading pure garbage ( in terms of content ) , where Harry is giving us pure petrolhead classics... Engine rebuild on a old school Lambo.... Let that sink in for a while.... #truemaster #petrolhead #cars #review #pov #harrysgarage
Sturgeon's Law. That established there are some wonderful restoration workers here on RUclips, better vids than this (though I love Harry). Here's a suggestion if you like English engines: Richard Michael Owen channel in general, and in particular his "My junk e-type restoration" series of about 8 vids. Just a joy to watch, all the insider knowledge from a Father & Son jag specialist.
@@johnsmith1474 don't get me wrong , I know this video or Harry in particular is not the top or best youtuber ( that title does not exists anyway ) , but the content on this channel is just pure , and nice to watch and easy to understand .....
@@mishview It's the same with Richard Michael Owen
Hit the nail on the head mate, worked on these engines in the late 60s and 70s. Was good to see again .
Mish View agreed! I am loving these videos.
Amazing footage Harry, thank you so much for sharing. Bizzarrini man, was such a great engineer. Going on 94 years old, now.
Fascinating stuff Harry, thank you. Love the comments about 'watch product placement' too after Part 1!
Has to be the best car related channel on RUclips. No BS. Just decent, honest reviews by a guy who really knows what he is talking about. Great work Harry.
Harry.... more videos like this Sir!! A magic look inside an Italian stallion by a couple of master mechanics with a knowledgeable owner.... this is impossible to find anywhere else. Bravo mate... keep up the quality content.
I'm not a gearhead but I really enjoy watching someone talk about an old Lamborghini engine. I find these segments really interesting. Great job filming the conversations.
Stripping engines normally isn’t my thing but this was thoroughly enjoyable.
In this era, when everything is made with the use of computers, it is hard to imagine how the old masters designed and built engines like this - very fascinating stuff!
I could watch this for hours. Two gentlemen in their best age, and a Lamborghini engine. Love the calm voice of the mechanic, and the slow pace. And when your engine guy wears a Submariner, he must be doing it right. Great content Harry!
love the calmness and laid back attitude of this. They're just using their knowledge and skills to do the job and nobody is panicking or rushing about making an arse of it! great to watch them having a laugh and clearly enjoying the job!
This is officially the best content you can get on RUclips these days!
A superbly absorbing and addictive video. Far better than some superficial supercar review so prolific on RUclips. More like this please.
You cannot buy experience it is learned and earned.
To listen to a man who knows his trade and has honesty and integrity is a very rare thing.
What a garage. Iain is a gentleman and a craftsman. More videos like this please Harry.
I know nothing about cars but watching people who have passion for their craft is wonderful. Every bit as genius as Mozart.
Such cool engines and so cool to see an old school extremely knowledgeable AND friendly mechanic sharing his experience with us. Very very cool.
Takes me back to my childhood watching my father and grandfather stripping down engines of all sorts of manufacturers.. brilliant, just brilliant to see.
Brilliant 👏👏Really enjoy these technical videos Harry👍🇦🇺
It is so fantastic to hear that the man from the workshop is speaking such a nice and good understandable English, so that even I can understand nearly everything! Really appreciate that!
I love that kind of videos from the workshop, it makes me remember the good old days when I also used to screw my engines apart :-)
Being a musician here on YT I have to say it's a real treat when you find such an intelligently made video without annoying music. I'm a great fan of this channel impatiently waiting for the next episode. All best wishes, Andreas Martin, lute player
By far my favourite automotive RUclipsr. I find myself watching Shmee’s videos only occasionally these days. Although he was the one who first got me into watching these types of videos, his content is becoming less and less satisfying to me.
Brilliant to see first-class content as always
The depth of knowledge that Iain has is just amazing.
This is about as good as it gets for sheer enjoyment, watching a youtube video, beats watching a car get wrapped or having a big exhaust fitted! Really looking forward to the next instalment.
Thanks Ian Marcus and you Harry another nerdy brilliant video. So chilled professional and unhurried. Is Ian Tyrrell related to the late great Ken?
This is fascinating and satisfying to watch. I love seeing similarities and comparing this 1970s practically race engine to a modernish (1990s-2000s) performance engine. So cool!
It is just so enjoyable to watch master mechanics lovingly dealing with classic equipment. The whole video overseen by a man who knows exactly what he is talking about. My only worry is what happens when these marvellous and knowledgeable guys are retired...I do hope somewhere in the background there is an apprentice learning this invaluable knowledge. Thanks for another fascining video Harry. Cheers, Bob
Enjoyed every minute of it, by all means thank you Harry's garage (!)
It's always nice to see a Lamborghini engine broken down by a pro and gone through with explanations for any discrepancies noted. Thank you!
Typical ' Harry ' production, cool, calm and thoroughly interesting and watching gentleman Iain expertly explaining every stage of discovery on a truly beautiful piece of engineering sculpture.Very much look forward to subsequent episodes.5 stars.
Usually you tube is pure dross useful for 5 minutes entertainment. Its disposable, but when it comes to genuine skill and knowledge shown here I cannot wait for the next installment !!
Absolutely loved that, thanks Harry. Really engaging and Iain obviously knows his onions. What a joy to watch. More please!
What we see here is knowledge, the ability to take your time when pulling the engine down. Not rushed. This type of professional approach is very rare and expensive. I watched my mechanic work on my race car with the same attitude, careful, slow and comprehensive.
I wish I could subscribe twice.
I'm interested in cars although not particularly in Lamborghini Espadas, but this was still fascinating. You hit the nail on the head every time. I love the complete lack of sensationalism or poor taste in all your videos as much as I love how intelligent and informative they are.
Plenty of rebuild videos on youtube. But there can't be many that cover a deep dive into an engine like this - and do it right. Thanks, Harry - and kudos to the garage for letting us watch. Bravo!
Yeah, that'll fit my Astra ;) Gorgeous engine, nice punchy little piston rods on a giant head, beautiful racing pedigree. Thank you for restoring this historical piece of engineering art.
You hope I've enjoyed this video? It's fantastic, Harry! What a relief when all the theories are proved during the disassembly. I can't wait for part 3.
Now this is what I call quality automotive video. Stripping down a Lambo engine with witty and prescient English commentary. Greetings from just south of Birmingham (Alabama)
When your mechanic uses words like 'consequently'.
And wears a Rolex while disassembling an engine...
Then you know he is not a two bit hack only working on old Cavaliers.
Just because you're a mechanic, does it not mean you have to seek lowest common denominator. A shame so many working class buffoons do that instead of conducting themselves with a bit of class.
@@AB-80X Old Cavaliers are fetching quite reasonable money of late!
@@AB-80X You get called a snob or posh nowadays if you don't talk and act like a footballer on a stag night 24/7
You pay!!
Thank you very much for these videos that you make mr Harry, its a fresh breathe of air to see all the things you post.
My favourite RUclips channel just gets better and better. Thanks for sharing this with us Harry. Fascinating stuff.
It’s April 2022 and I’m just getting started on this. You are timeless Harry!!
The deep understanding of the engine engineering is quite astounding
I remember that copper grese on the studs, the heads came away so cleanly - superb!
This is the most prim and proper engine disassembly I've ever seen in my whole.Jolly good video chap's.Cheers
Loving how much soul and heart you are putting into your youtube channel! This has to be one of my favourite videos you ever posted 🙂
Thanks for sharing your passion!
Thanks. I wasn't sure if these engine rebuild vids were going to work but now I'm just as hooked as you are on what comes next too!
Harry's garage Can’t wait 😃👏
Just simply a pure joy to watch, and listen to all that technical knowledge! Love your videos Harry, just brilliant!
this content is just fantastic. really enjoyed how they talked about the parts and the problems while throwing in humor here and there
Wow Harry, you do lead a charmed life! When we did a top end for a couple bent valves on our 308QV one of the heads had to be cut off! The other just popped off like yours, but the forward head... Not so much. Six weeks of work hanging the engine, even acid down the studs... Finally it was cut into three pieces and it was still six hours... All was well in the end and the car runs really well now. Congrats on so little issues! F
Fantastic, thanks Harry for taking us along with you. Can’t wait for the next instalment
I'm really enjoying this engine tear down and rebuild Harry. Thank you. I'll be watching the full series.
Wow that mechanic is outstanding with the knowledge that he has. Very fun watch.
Textbook findings Harry. I bet you are very pleased with a instant definitive answer to your problems. Great news
Just love watching and listening to you both sharing a wealth of experience and knowledge. I've never been a 'practical' man myself so its a joy to watch you both confidently dealing with all the issues that arise. Thanks for many enjoyable videos - and Harry's Farm too.
I just had my first sights of pretty much every important V12 Lamborghini, I was filming a Lamborghini meet in a town nearby, saw the Countach, Diablo, 350, Espada, Jalpa, Miura for the first time...it was a really special experience. Of course the sight of Espada reminded me of Harry 😁 I could only imagine how impressive it was grand touring in it back in the days, king of the road thing. Love the rebuild videos, thank you 🙏
Lovely to see craftsmen at work, educating all with their wisdom!
Thanks for these kind of video's harry, subscribed a few weeks ago and i can say you are by far my favorite youtube channel, no nonsense straight talk car related content. Keep it up.
Ian and Marcus, have a brilliant knowledge of this engine - I can totally see why people entrust their supercars to them for work.
Nice methodical & clean workmanship & well diagnosed prior to disassembly !a pleasure to view from one technician to another 👍🏻
really enjoyed this. No major disasters evident which is a relief. thank you Harry !
Excellent video Harry and that engine is a work of art .What an incredible engineer bizzarrini was. Decades ahead with his work
This is one of the most satisfying video series i've ever seen
Brilliant! Love the nerdy strip down videos, perfect way to start the day, coffee in hand and an engine breakdown video
Wow . This was fun and Interesting. Thanks so much! They are very professional. Greetings from Iceland
Honestly one of the best channels on the Internet
A great video, Having stripped and rebuilt a couple of 4 cylinder OHV engines way back I'm sure I could smell the old petrol smell that you get with engines. That's real reality!
I absolutely love these rebuild videos. Harry you need to get some more rebuilds done. :) I could watch this all day.
Great vid as usual. I would entrust Iain to remove my kidney. Such a gentleman and clearly someone who knows his stuff.
so glad the engine was inspected in time, great job Harry. Thanks to all involved in this amazing video , such a rare engine!! kind regards
Excellent series. Really good to hear from industry insiders and their thorough understanding of these cars. Keep it up.
Great insight on how these classic masterpieces tick, I hope the crankshaft doesn't need to be reground again.
Fascinating, Harry. Great work. I wonder how many times I’ll be watching this episode.😉 I am eagerly anticipating the next one! Thanks to Iain sharing his work. 👍🏻
That's when cars were built to last, the age of this car, and that's all that's wrong amazing love Lamborghinis would love one, keep up the good work Ian your the best ive seen for any classic car.
I learned more in 20 minutes than I knew about engines previous 40 years.
squeaker millennial
Then you literally didn't know anything about engines at all.
BeyerT1 No. I didn’t. How does that concern you?
Fascinating, absolutely fascinating. Thanks for the upload Harry.
Made me smile when Iain say's "It's a 2 man job, anything that goes wrong I can blame him" 🤣 *Brilliant* finding myself watching these video's all day, so addictive lads great content 👍🏻
Fascinating watching this skilled surgeon at work. The blue rope and submariner comment made me chuckle too. I see you got some nice close ups with the camera, looks like a 5513. Might watch it again after the new Harry's farm video. What a treat!
Can't get much better than this hey, a piece of real education. I've learnt so much just watching this process.
The sound of the components, clicking and rattling are more than satisfying.
Harry, quite right, that sump is a casting work of art. Looks brilliant :-)
Sure hope you document a full detailed build for us. I just love this stuff. Thanks Harry.
Couldn't have gone any smoother! Lucky boy Harry.
I was looking forward for this video. Keep it up with the Lambo engine's videos Harry.
Enjoying the videos Harry, I sold my Series 3 Espada about 6 years ago after 14 years of ownership.
