Reporter Amelia Jenne follows the conservationists risking their lives to stop the corruption that is destroying the lungs of Europe.
In Romania it’s thought half of the timber harvested is illegal, according to environmental campaigners and the law enforcement. The EU has launched legal action against the Romanian government who continue to authorise logging in protected areas that are rich in wildlife, and vital in the fight against climate change.
In Suceava, a hotspot for illegal logging in the Carpathian Mountains, Jenne meets Dan-Catalin Turiga, a former government forester turned whistleblower who’s been tipped off that wood is being stolen from a government owned forest. On arrival they discover trees which have been illegally marked for harvest by government officials. On the mountain roads illegal shipments are being moved in plain sight, and as Dan chases down a truckload of suspected illegal timber, Jenne learns how it’s possible to cheat the government systems intended to provide transparency. Days later the police confiscate the truck and its load, and open an investigation.
But speaking out against government employed officials and loggers that form the Timber Mafia can be a dangerous business. Jenne meets those on the receiving end of death threats, beatings, and poisonings in an effort to permanently silence them.

I heard it's the same for Great Britain, Canada is deforesting itself to sell timber that ends up being wood pellet fuel for British power plants

human greed has no limits, we're at the point where we cannot reverse the consequences, all because some people wanted a quick buck
Human greed has existed for as long as humans have. It comes from one of our most basic instincts, rooted in the desire all life exhibits in order to survive. Yes, we have come along way since our early ancestors but even though we have and lessened many of the dangers to our immediate survival via our technology, our most primal instincts still exist, revealing itself as "greed" even while living in our modern world of abundance.
In reality we're infants on the grand scale of things and still have a long way to go.
This is happening because of the deals in the Treaty of Adherence to the EU in 2007. We had to contribute with resources and this was our most abundant. It was detrimental to us and in time, others caught wind of the business and became corrupted by greed and later, power.
Stop the corruption in your country.
Same exact thing is happening in Croatia, which is supposed to be a more advanced country than Romania, but it's probably even worse.
Normally it is,just some countries pretend to be better and hide it better.
And this is where a lot of IKEA furniture comes from :)
there ought to be regulations to ban clear-cutting primary forests and restrict logging to a percentage of trees per species per area, to protect trees above defined trunk diameters (because the oldest trees are the least replaceable), and to protect hollow trees down to much smaller diameters, because hollow trunks are simultaneously more valuable for biodiversity and much less valuable for timber - in most cases, the wood is rotten, discoloured or insect-damaged far beyond the cavities, making a much smaller portion of the trunk volume actually marketable as lumber. you can make firewood from 15 year old plantation trees, don't make it from 300 year old giants!

Fun fact: Wood, Timber and Lumber are more Rare than Diamonds in like a Solar System sense.
This kind of thing also happens in Borneo Island where the logging tycoons forcing forest natives to cut down the trees of virgin forests, leaving many endangered orangutans homeless and vulnerable to human threats. Not helping the case is that the officials in Sarawak funded these tycoons to launder money to offshore shell companies in tax havens outside of Malaysia.

Many of the Sarawak and Sabah timber companies also have logging operations in other countries, in Central and West Africa, Kalimantan Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, other smaller Pacific island nations, Tasmania Australia, New Zealand, and even South America.
These people should do like the Africans did and take the law into their own hands and stop this at whatever cost, these trees will never grow back , a trashed out logging truck can not haul logs , same time for a skidder, drain the dope out cut the sensor light lock up the motor, this is a worldwide problem but the people should stand up and stop it,

Boycotting and trade embargoes will solve the problem. Obviously, these people have a willing and ready market that is also to blame for the deforestation.

Beautifully done documentary. To the reporter please do another one if possible if it is safe for you. I say this from the safety of my home from overseas but this is tragic I am a friend to trees and see severe deforestation every day at the city I live in it looks like a desert now

Guess I'm missing something here,are they talking timber theft from the owner of the timber or what?I kind of got the impression they were shook up about the trees being cut?I know here in the US trees grow back,do they not grow back in romania?And why is it the business of foreigners?
The trees being illegally cut are on National Park land, which is supposed to be protected. On top of that, the trees being cut are hundreds of years old, when are they going to grow back while we're in the worst climate crisis since we've started recording history? After everyone on the planet is dead? You're talking about the owner. The whole population of Romania is the owner. It's state owned. People that work for the state are stealing it and protecting each other.

Well western companies buy raw wood material, so Romania isnt really building processing industry so there is no economy build up. Its more economical to preserve the old forest and profit from tourism.
