I remember when I landed the plane once. All of the sudden everything impossible to me became possible. I remember looking out the window and thinking I could become the next president. I could be an Astronaut. I could win the Tour de France on a tricycle. I never landed the plane again. Ever.
I think this landing would also be easier in Microsoft Flight Simulator X (a PC joystick is a better controller for a flight simulator than an NES gamepad).
I used to do this successfully all the time when I was a kid of 8 or so. There's a little trick though that's not discussed in the game manual. The secret I always used was, "Hand the controller to Dad."

Theres something oddly calming about the jet ambience. But at the same time, I like how the music cuts out and makes it reallt tense for porbably the hardest part of the game.

I could never get past Mission 2 because I could never get properly hooked up to the fuel plane, and I'd drown. This game would probably be 28471 times easier on an emulator provided you could make the controls "right".
Nice. I just got this at a retro game store for my NES collection. Landed the other day in an emulator with no problem. This part was always a problem when I was little.
Funny that a lot of people are bashing this game for the landing sequences which are pretty easy to do. They didn't think about that the controls behave just like you would control a real plane, thus they are pressing the wrong buttons (up & down). :)

It's the computer playing the landing (you can tell by the music that played in the demo mode), besides that landing was hard but not impossible even with normal pad, you just had to keep pressed DOWN key when view switched in third person until the plane landed
That's the problem I had on the last level, beat the game, but didn't see the ending sequence because I crashed, I was soooo angry, but I got a TOP Gun report that I will probably never see again.
😂 now i understand why i had never got to land the plane: 1) at 5 i didn't knew how to read, 2) at 5 i didn't knew what it means: altitude and/or speed, 3) this game is made for english language people and in that age i only knew spanish...😮...😂!! But God knows that I'm going to land that freaking plane 😂...im gonna blow the cartridge dust and finished this situation once for all 😎...👍!!
I had never noticed the altitude and speedometer..... Using those as reference might have helped with verifying we were speeding up or speeding down I landed that thing once by accident
Ahh good memories, but lol i just realised, the landing is on the wrong side of the carrier, the tower is usualy back of the carrier, not front, with the catapults on the front end. :)

this only works with powerglove, was a merchandising for make it sell more. impossible to do with controller without cheats.
