- In this video, we're going to learn how to play Flick 'Em Up! If you have any comments or questions, please do not hesitate to post them in the RUclips comments below.
Note: The English rule book contains a mistranslation of the French rules. When you exit a building you have to pass all the way out. My video is correct, but the rule book is not (in the first printing, at least).

Always a pleasure to watch your reviews Rodney! I think I'm going to track this game down as an after Christmas present to me :-)
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for the kind words on the videos.
I really appreciate these How to Play videos even when you don't record gameplay. This really helps me get an understanding of the rules before even reading the rulebook. Keep up the great work!
+Nicole van der Hoeven Thank you Nicole, I'm very pleased to hear it!
Had an absolute blast playing this at Gen Con, although I don't think I will buy it until I build a gaming table with borders, mainly because I lose everything haha.
+Anthony Medves Pieces do tend to get knocked about :)
Thanks. Just bought this game and really look forward to playing it now. Excellent video :)
+Alan Forsyth (TMUK) Thank you Alan - I hope you have a great time playing!
Great video as usual!
Thank you so much, keep them going!
Thanks Blue!
This came in the post today! I can't wait to unbox and play tonight!
+Tom Matthews Hope you have a great time!
I've just recently found your channel and i've gotta say its bloody awesome!!! Cheers for the tutorials mate , You've earned Yourself a Subscriber in Me *P
Yesterday's Cub~ Thanks for the kind words! Glad you're enjoying the videos :)
This looks so adorable!
Thanks for checking it out Red :)
Thanks for the video. Made it easier to learn and teach.
+RottenJeeves You've very welcome, glad you enjoyed it!
Luke is the sheriff? That seems a tad suspicious :) Anyway, thanks for this rundown - I'm not a dexterity game fan myself, but it's always nice to see games that make creative use of the physical space.
+Tim Lawrance Yes, find for me to show a variety of different game styles :)
At first I was sceptical about this game because flicking is not really my thing, but wow... It looks amazing. Seems like something my family would love.
+Akagami Matsu Thanks for giving the video a chance!
***** You're welcome. I certainly don't regret it ^^
Thank you it's very helping!
Great to hear :)
This looks really fun, reminds me of dexterity games. Thanks I think I'll pick it up
Glad you liked it!
Great video. My only question is what material is on your table? I've seen a lot of video with felt and I don't think a polished wood table is ideal. Looking to make a custom top to fit over my existing table. Thanks for the info!
+Brandon Fox I forget what it's called, to be honest. It's not felt.
This looks hilarious!
This looks like a fun game! I'm not sure my game table will be good for this, but clearing the dining table might work.
+Scott Seaward You can play on a smaller surface, the main thing is that the surface be relatively smooth.
Super video! Im almost sure to buy this game. Just a question... how is the reboxing of all the game pieces? Is there in the box enough space for all the mounted buildings or each time must be dismounted? How with the wear of the material? Tvm :)
I didn't have trouble with it, but your mileage may vary. Wear and tear sometimes comes down to the players.
I just ordered several games to keep the family entertained during the 'lock down', including this one! I can't wait to search the house over for pieces the kids launch across the house, ha!
Hunting for piece is part of the fun :)
If this game becomes reasonably priced I will look to flick it up. Another great video. I wonder what sort of expansions will enhance the rules and gameplay.
+John Evans I've shot the expansion video and hope to have it online tomorrow.
Hello .Great video us always. On min 10 where you mention any objects hit by a bullet are readjusted to the way they where before while in page 7 of rulebook clearly states that any objects, buildings etc displaced by the bullet remain in these new places. You only rearrange when hit by movemment disc.
This was something that I asked the publisher about while filming as well. The text on page 7 refers to what happens when a bullet misses the cowboy. This is referenced at 10:46 in the video. When the bullet hits a cowboy however, any extra cowboys or objects hit need to be returned to where they came from and stood back up. The reasoning for this is that the bullet has already hit the cowboy, so any ricochet shouldn't have happened and needs to be repaired.
Oh thanx for clarifying that and for also for the quick replying
Hey Rodney while I was looking on Amazon for this game, I noticed there was a plastic version from Z-Man games. They have the same logo and info on the back of the box. I wanted to ask if you knew besides the pieces being plastic, if there is anything different gameplay wise. It is $20 cheaper so I would rather get the plastic version if it is the same as the wood version.
Yep, they did release a plastic version. I heard about that, but haven't seen it in person. Not sure if there are any rules changes (probably not)..
this game looked like a game we made up when were in grade school! i love it.
quick question:
1. how does the clock work? is it automatic?
2. and what is the size of your table? definitely need it for this game :))
Hey Martin, I shot this long enough ago that I don't know the answer to the first question, and I also don't have that table anymore :) I believe the table was approximately 5 feet by 3 feet.
@@WatchItPlayed thank you for your response!
What table are using now though? Is it bigger?
@@MartinTabanag Yes, I think it's about 6 by 3.
Hey great video :)
not sure if its been mentioned before and i know its something that you don't have aby control over, but I have just received the game for my birthday and I have an issue with the buildings and the bases.
In your video they appear to attach and detach quite smoothly however it is a really tough fit with my copy of the game and has caused slight damage to one of the buildings.
protective stickers were provided which i have used however i dont want to attsch/detach the stands after each play session and cause additinal damage to the building components this also means i cant store the pieces in the box.
I have emailed Pretzal games however i haven't heard anything from them.
Did you have any suggestions without me having to physically alter the pieces myself?
again apologies for the question.
Laurence, sorry to hear you are having trouble with your copy. Unfortunately, you're right, there really isn't anything else I know that you can do, except contact the company. If you don't hear back through email, you could try them on Twitter if you have an account there.
Thank you, hopefully they'll get in touch. I have seen people with a similar issue on BGG but no real solution. It must be some slight changes for newer batches of the game.
Such a fun game though and so easy to make your own scenarios :)
Hi Rodney! I know it's a long time since you posted this video, but I have a simple question.
Here and there on BGG they say:
1. when flicking, you can't use the resistance of the table, neither
2. in a building there's a maximum number of cowboys allowed, and it's 2. So duels can only be played 1 vs 1 or 1 vs 2
I honestly prefer the version of these rules so as they're shown in your video, they make much more sense to me this way.
So the question is: since the rulebook doesn't explicitly specify either of those two aspects, did you ask clarifications to the authors / publishers before shooting? I will keep playing the way you teach, but I'd feel more comfortable in playing the game as it was intended by the authors themselves.
If you don't remember, it's ok, just take notice that I LOVE your videos :D
Take care.
I do remember! I have the publishers check all of the tutorial videos before they go out - and with this video in particular, I remember having to ask several questions (as the rulebook translation from French wasn't very good), so I have a high level of confidence in what is being shown here.
@@WatchItPlayed You're the best! Thank you!
Great video! Was wondering though if you read somewhere that you are allowed to use the table for resistance when flicking! Pretzel games said in a forum in bgg that you are not allowed i think! Thanks in advance!
+BoardGameG(r)eek Yes, before recording I did check with them, as I was concerned about the exact rules on this as well.
+Watch It Played oh then its allowed for sure!! Thanks Rodney!
Awesome
Love the video, as always but be honest, how many times you had to record this flicks to show hits, misses etc so perfectly? Or are you just that good?
I like to to think Rodney "Dead Eye" Smith made all those shots on the first take. He might not be able to roll dice, but he can flick a disk like a homing missile.
+Wojciech Król I'm not to shabby with dexterity games, I'll admit. Growing up with Crokinole may have helped :)
+Watch It Played Unless you're aiming at Frank. ;) You are crazy good normally though!
+Pep MacDonald Frank is my Flick Em Up Archnemisis!
Its 8 months in the future and I just got the game, I still can't get over how good you are at flicking, and how bad I am. Game is a blast though!
Do you have any recommendations on what material is ideal for the surface I'm playing on?
I wouldn't say I have a particular recommendation for that. I've played it on a plastic surface, cloth surface, wood surface. Mainly, you just want something flat.
I have a question about the intivate token. Does it change or pass to the other team every round?? The rulebook does not seem clear, but it has a weird A-A-B-B-C-C diagram.
The AABBCC diagram is just to show you the order that cowboys take turns in (and you always start with the A Cowboy of the player with the initiative token).
Unless the initiative changes teams, then it stays with the team it started with each round.
If a cowboy is shot dead and it has the initiative token, then the token is placed on the box space corresponding to the cowboy
who shot the bullet. That's when it changes possession.
Thank you for the reply. It makes sense now.
The only thing I dont get is shooting a downed cowboy... Does it do the damage or since they cant be knocked over does the damage not apply?
+Dave Raghanti Shooting a downed cowboy has no effect, it's a wasted shot to hit a downed cowboy.
What material is on your table. It still flicks real nice
This is Crêpe, flipped upsidedown.
I've heard good things about this one!
For the love of games do a play through! There are only like 2 out there and I'm dying to see a play through of this game before I buy it
No plans to currently, but we may.
Can you make a video about how to play the balloon cup board game from Germany ?
Not one I've played, so no plans to currently.
RODNEY, WHICH EXPANSION I SHOULD BUY BETWEEN RED ROCK TOMAHAWK AND STALLION CANYON?
Hey Huy, I I avoid reviewing or recommending on this channel, so I can't help with tat. I talk a bit about this here: ruclips.net/video/p0Lv8LHadMc/видео.html&t=10m55s
I figure a pool table would be a great playing surface for this with the rails built in and felt surface.
+Daniel MacDonald Yes, that would work nicely.
Except, you know, the big holes...
I've seen the rampage gameplay... it must have taken Rodney ages to get those takes just right or it must have been Pep acting as a flicker stand-in!
+Pedro Mascarenhas Belo This game has no blowing - that helped :)
This is torture. 7 Wonders Duel and now this - the two games I have been most anticipating. Rodney: y u do this?
+Carlordau So you don't have to read the rulebook when the game gets there and you can just start playing :)
+Watch It Played You got me :P
can you shoot at any angle or do you have to shoot straight?
As long as you place the bullets on either side of the cowboy then you're free to shoot at any angle - as I understand it.
Thank you!
It looks so epic, but it's so expensive!
+Luke Young Where are you looking? It's out of stock in a lot of places, so you may be seeing an inflated price.
+Watch It Played It is $70 on their website. I think it looks awesome! But I don't think I'd pay anything over $50 for it. I heard the quality of the build is excellent from other reviewers too, but $70 is a lot!
Can you shoot backwards ?
I wasn't able to find any information about that either way. Since the pieces don't have faces, it might be hard to keep track of, unless you put little eyes on them :)
You get two actions. Can you shoot twice instead of move twice?
+Nate Hocking Sure can! I talk about that here: ruclips.net/video/LBfvqUJU00Q/видео.htmlm38s
We need a tutorial for the Dead of Winter version. XD
How many takes for the flicking scenes? =P
+Marco Curvello I'm pretty good at the flicking, it's doing it while delivering lines that makes it tricky :)
+Watch It Played Oh wow! I always thought you recorded the audio separately from those closes of the table. Now I'm impressed! Good job!
+Marco Curvello Yup, they are recorded at the same time :)
Well, that looked interesting. Might not get it because my playspace is too limited for a dexterity-based game (and my floor is carpeted), but I'll watch the gameplay sessions with Luke.
Speaking of dexterity games, I wonder how you think about Level 99 Games' "Disk Duelers". I'm somewhat interested in it despite the limited playspace, but I can't imagine how that would be played out (that and if it's good enough to eventually buy the Print & Play-version)
Asking for thoughts on a game will likely elicit nothing more than a "get off my lawn!" lol
+AstonWildsteel I have played and I am attempting to track down a copy, but as TheGreatHamEl suggests, I avoid offering opinions on games. I don't feel right trying to define the fun that someone else will find in a game.
*****
Fair enough. Just wanted something like a first impression from you anyway, I'm aware that the fun with Disc Duelers highly depends on the playgroup, since homebrewing rules is actually encouraged.
so whats the point of going inside a building?
Some of the scenarios will involve entering buildings for specific purposes.
It also gives you protection while still being able to shoot out of it, right?
FranzBinder20 That's true.
Not enough Pep
+Douglas Painter The exact right amount of Pep for this episode. Do you know how long this would have taken to shoot if Pep had done it? Components would have constantly been flung across the room and lost :)
+Watch It Played I can't get enough power without my thumb. This game hath thwarted me quite thusly.
can you play this with Luke
+MrTinytru We'll see!
