Most Difficult Hike Of My Life - King Ravine & The Subway To Mt Adams - Terrifying 25 Trails - NH

- In this video I hike to the summit of Mt Adams, but I don't take the easy route. My route is through 2 of the Terrifying 25 trails of New Hampshire called King Ravine and the 'Subway'. It requires you to climb through extreme boulder fields, caves, talus rock and scree until you reach the top of the Headwall of King Ravine. To top that off, I decided that it wouldn't be right unless i summited Mt Adams proper.. one of the 48 4,000 footers of NH. Not only is it one of the 48, it's the second tallest of them reaching a towering 5,774 ft! The summit is commonly taken over by extreme wind and weather systems, and fortunately for me, my hiking day had near perfect weather!
The route i decided on was one that would require me to hike 10 miles, with 4,700 ft of elevation gain to reach the summit. It was the most difficult hike I have done yet, I even felt that It topped the difficulty of Huntington Ravine by quite a bit!! While not being a complete class 3 with the level of exposure as Huntington, King Ravine + the 'Subway' had more strenuous bouldering and a talus field that went on without let up, and the last half mile to Mt Adams was much steeper than pushing for Mt Washington once up the Huntington Ravine. I'll let you decide for yourself if you ever to take on the challenge.
Its a beautiful, rugged trail that isn't always well marked and requires scrambling skills, navigation, and ability to keep composure when faced with highly challenging routes that could rattle you if you let it.
My route:
I parked at the Appalachia Trailhead, took the Link Trail to Lowes path briefly then hopped onto the King Ravine trail. Eventually breaking off to tackle the Subway after popping out of tree line, then back onto the King Ravine and up to Airline to finish the remaining climb to the summit of Mt Adams. My descent was a straight shot down Airline and back to my car.
Airline trail is actually part of the Terrifying 25 as well, though on the elective trails list. There are 20 required trails, and another list with optional elective trails that you choose 5 from to complete 25 of the most terrifying trails in NH. Here's the link if you're interested in checking it out for yourself!

Please ensure that you are well prepared mentally and physically before you head out on any of these trails. Clothing, food, water, emergency items, gear, and knowledge of the area are essential for a safe hiking trip.
Thanks so much for watching! Happy Hiking!!
Great video, thanks 👍
Thank you!
Wearing a smart watch gives the hike an additional dimension, as you get to know your body's physiology better. Thanks for the videos.
amazing view at the summit, a great reward for your hard work
Wow, great job capturing this! That looks hard AF 😂
Thanks! 😅
At your 12 minute point I had no clue where to go a few years ago and thunder git so loud it felt like my soul left my body. I legit turned around and went home. Haha. Awesome video. You're very ambitious!!
Oh my goodness! Thunder would have made me get outta there too! Thank you. And thanks for watching!! 💗
Gawd, I was feeling so anxious with you in those tight spaces, I think I've developed claustrophobia in my late years! Another channel I watch is doing these cave explorations, and I just can't watch!
Are you married? ;-)
Amazing videoing. I don’t know how you climb and record the same time. Thanks for the great trip up 🥰
Aww thanks for watching!
Hi Amanda, love love love your videos! Back in the day, I worked out of Camp Dodge doing trail work and leading group hikes in the Whites. I can actually smell the trail while watching your videos. The airline was always a favorite. Peace, and be well.
I hiked the same route, including the Subway, in 1994. The best hike in the Whites. Kudos for capturing it all with GoPro. You're a real trooper!
Oh nice!!!! Haha of course! It was fun 💗💗💗
Killing it out there great work
Thanks!! 💗
Your videos always bring Joy and peace. I didnt realize how strong you are, I hiked 6 miles in a moderate trail and i was toasted after. God bless.
Thank you for the kind words!! 💗 I have days where I can’t even believe I can hike at all 😂..
Thank you so much for watching, keep getting out there! 😀 Happy Hiking!
Throughly enjoyed watching you crush this hike. I hope your channel grows exponentially.
Aww thanks!!! That is so kind of you to say! 😃😃😃 I’m glad you liked it!
Wow you are amazing. That looked like a real hard trail and on such a hot day. That was fun to watch thanks.
Thanks! The wind after coming out of tree line saved me 😅.. Thanks for watching!
Absolutely loved how you talked about your bale out plan, thanks for that! Great adventure Bub, you da best 🎉
Oh yeah, of course! Thanks for watching! 💗💗💗
Good video! Looks like an awesome hike. Thank you for sharing such good beta 🙏
Thanks again for watching!! 😉 Appreciate you!
Love your courage and videos! Thank you.
Thanks 😅💗💗 And thanks for watching!! Glad you enjoy them!!
Great video of a challenging hike. I can’t wait to hike the Whites this fall. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!! Oh that’s awesome! They are so much fun!
18:23 I liked this part. You’re relieved that you’ve made it through then to your surprise there’s another one and you hear a faint “Oh sh*t” 😂😂😂 that would’ve been me at the first one haha. You killed it though. Nice video!!!
Haha! Glad you enjoyed it! 😂 Thank you Matthew! 💗💗💗😘😘😘
Props! I appreciate how you don't make it look like, "Oh, no big deal!" I'm surprised you didn't put your helmet on in the Subway!! But I guess all that hair helps! And probably makes you fifteen degrees hotter!
I'm really enjoying your videos. Thank you for taking us along!
Do you have a Garmin or something for SOS? Accidents do happen. That's definitely one of those "rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it" items.
Haha! Of course :) I don’t want to make it look too easy.. 😉😂
The helmet is only for class three and above, or if I really need it for filming because I just can’t not have my hands free.
I do have a sattelite device, I have a
Spot X. :) I’m wouldn’t hike alone without it. Thanks for asking!! Appreciate your words and that you enjoyed the video! 💗💗💗
Awesome!! On my list for the T25. Great video as always
Sweet!! Thanks!! 💗
You are an amazing human! The Whites are the hardest hiking in my experience.
They kicked my butt for sure!! 💗💗💗 Thanks!
Very nice. You do some hard trails 👍👍
Thanks!!! I like a challenge. 😅💗
Your videography of the Subway is impressive. Now you need to hike through Mahoosuc Notch. Great video Amanda!
Omg thanks so much! I didn’t realize how bad the superview distorted the edges but it captured more of the view which is what I wanted. 😅 I appreciate your words! I love Mahoosuc Notch! 💪🏻
Certain looks like a terrifyingly fun hike 😂. The cave crawling looked like a blast! I’d be scared of that I’m sure haha. I may have to do this, isn’t My Willey part of the T-25 with the ladders as well?
Haha, it’s more fun than terrifying though! I’d have to check the list. There’s 20 main ones and 10 elective trails I believe.
I really enjoyed my time in that ravine a couple years ago. Wait, I frigged my leg up on that trip. Okay maybe not so much. But still, that ravine is delightful and I'm bummed I didn't have time to check out the Subway. It looks fantastic!
Oh no 😅! Well, at least your on the mend now. The Subway was tougher than I anticipated, especially with a heavy pack. Thanks for watching Seth! 💗
Nicely done!!!
Thank you!! 💗
Just realized, did you change your YT name?
Amanda, great pics especially the subway. How did you capture that. I am hiking vicariously through you. Can’t do hikes like that anymore I did do that hike about 20 years ago at age 52. It was a great hike but not my toughest day of hiking. That would be hiking from Lonesome Lake Hut down the Coleman Brook Trail to the Flume Slide Trail across Franconia Ridge to Greenleaf Hut and I was only 36. Probably didn’t help that we climbed the Kinsman’s and Cannon the day before.
Thanks! I used a GoPro mounted to a hiking pole. I’m working my way up to be able to tackle more gain, but for now this is the most I’ve done in a day.
Your hardest day sounds like it would kill me lol!! That’s a lot of ground to cover. 😃😅💗
@@AmandaDouin 13 miles and we estimated 5,000 to 5,500 vertical
@@JoelRiklin long day! 😅
Amazing video. Thanks for sharing. 👍17
Thanks for watching!!! 💗
such a cool video!!
Awww thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it! 😃😃😃
BTW you have great balance 😂
Thanks!! Haha. I don’t feel like it sometimes 😅
Descending down the Air Line Trail - to the left(west)is King Ravine, and to the right(east)is Snyder Brook(Ravine). One of the few places where a glacial ravine and an erosion ravine exist side-by-side. Be well, stay safe. 🥾
That’s super interesting! Thank you for the info. I need to read up on geology of the area, it’s so fascinating!! Thanks for watching 💗💗💗
@@AmandaDouin Not to waste your time, but check out Madison Boulder, one of the largest glacial erratics in the world. Not a hike - just a fascinating anomaly, and it's estimated to weigh between 9 million and 11 million pounds. Imagine the colossal force it took to move that thing?
@@jeannenimmo5 Def will! Thanks!! 😍 I love rocks lol
@@AmandaDouin You may already know this, and I should have said it before, but the difference between a glacial ravine and an erosion(watercourse)ravine is this: A glacial ravine is U-shaped and an erosion ravine is V-shaped. You can amaze your friends with this little bit of useless knowledge.
@@jeannenimmo5 amazing! 😍 Thanks! Haha. I’ll have to read up on this stuff. 😅
I need Madison and Adams for the 48 4ks... think I will avoid the Subway/Kings Ravine lol😁
Awww.. 😂 I believe in you! Adams and Madison are so fun!! Happy Hiking!
How is the flying insect situation in that area?
Beautiful work as always especially for a fellow hiker from Maine stuck working in Massachusetts
Oh the flying creatures were a little annoying.. but as long as you keep moving they stay away pretty good. The wind once out of tree line and up the headwall a bit really helped push them away. That wind was such a relief! Thank you, and thanks so much for watching! 💗💗💗
When talking to actors in theater, you should say "Break a leg" instead of Good luck.
I think Good Luck is more appropriate to say to RUclipsrs who climb block terrain!
😂 I think your on to something! Haha thanks for watching!
Please be carefull amanda.
친구야 좋은영상이다
감사합니다 💗💗💗
Always wear wool not cotton and a liquid i.v. hydration pack added to tje water. I always do when i hike the cats.
@wayside70 Thanks. Yeah I’m very aware of all the correct materials to wear during treks outdoors. All of my hiking wardrobe is synthetic or wool. Etc. The point of the cotton tank was to create the affect of a cooling towel around the body, to help not overheat. My body doesn’t handle heat well. All the details were explained in the video. I changed into the synthetic hiking shirt before the summit because of windchill. Thanks though!!
Aww - I love cats!! 💗💗💗 Thanks for watching.
I think you’re crazy but to each his own. Never should attempt that alone.
Some people think unicorns don’t exist
Haha Thanks for watching!! It was such a grueling but fun day!
Unicorns.. do they exist? 😇
@@AmandaDouin only on RUclips
@@mainesteam4636 haha 💗
Have you done the presidential traverse.
Not yet. I need to get a bit stronger first :) I had a set back around new years when I broke my kneecap. Thankfully I’m able to hike as hard as I am. I’ll get there though! 💗💪🏻 Have you done it?
I’m thinking about it. 19 miles is a lot. I was looking at something shorter when I found your Huntington ravine video. Not sure I’m ready for that. Watched your king ravine and I thought I heard you say it was harder the Huntington?
@@caseykouplan8227How about the full length of the Franconia Ridge Trail. Go up the Flume Slide Trail and down the Bridle Path or Greenleaf
Another excellent video. Love your narration, editing and hiking ability. Was so inspired with your Huntington video that I hiked it the day after watching it. Love this area of the whites so much my dogs name is John Quincy Adams…. (Quincy for short).
@@caseykouplan8227 Well with the Subway.. it really tacked on some challenge. So, it depends on how you take it up. Skipping the subway would make it a lot easier but still difficult. It also depends on how well you slept the night prior lol. For some reason for Huntington, I just felt so much better physically when I was done I did with Kings. Castle Ravine is also harder IMO than Huntington. 🤷🏻♀️
Your a cutie and amazing 😊
Aww thanks!!! 😃😅💗
Really enjoying your videos. Get a good sense for the "beta" on this one and the Huntington Ravine (which I hope to do Saturday).
Awesome, glad they’re helping! 💗
Hi Amanda, love love love your videos! Back in the day, I worked out of Camp Dodge doing trail work and leading group hikes in the Whites. I can actually smell the trail while watching your videos. The airline was always a favorite. Peace, and be well. ❤
Thank you so much!
That is so awesome!! The area has such a beautiful trail system, and thanks for the work you put in!
Airline was so much prettier than I anticipated, I love how it follows the ridge line! 💗 Thanks again for watching, appreciate it!!!
