Each level of protection gives 1 armor point. So an Iron I leggings is the same as a normal diamond. Prot IV iron is the same as Prot III diamond, and so on.

if you break leaves with sheers, you get the leaves, no sapling so if he used sheers he would have gotten a different drop.
