DOES A TALLER SNOWBLOWER CHUTE THROW SNOW BETTER THAN A SMALLER ONE? Not only do I want to ADD MORE THROWING DISTANCE to this old snowblower but I also want to ARC THE SNOW HIGHER and have BETTER CONTROL of where I send it. I recruited the help of a Garage Gear Subscriber to give me a hand! He sent me 2 taller chutes to try out. Watch and see how I install them and test them to see if a TALLER CHUTE is really BETTER! This is the next step in my plan to RE-POWER this old Ariens into a SNOW THROWING TANK. This looks to be one of my funnest projects yet! LIKE & SUBSCRIBE!!!

I also wanted to thank you for giving me the motivation to tackle my grandfather's Ariens snowblower (exactly like the mint one you bought for a $100 bucks). Grandfather, Father and I've been using it every season and even tho I was given that Husqvarna, I can't let go of my 70 yr old machine. Bought a 19 inch chute last week & I'm going to put an impeller kit on it, thanks to your video. I'm grabbing a new engine at Harbor F, this wknd. On sale for a $100. Can't beat that price. My father loved that Ariens, he'd be very proud watching a 70 yr old machine spank the newer machines...
    Thanks again! 👍🏼

From South Buffalo. I have an older model Ariens snowblower and I found it worked better than my old Toro. I replaced the front skids and mounted new skids with wheels. I think I got them from Home Depot about 4 years ago. I saved the original shids just in case if the wheels broke but they're still working. Also a shield behind the top plastic black cover to help prevent snow from going in by the belts. I used a peices of aluminum siding bent to fit and its working. I also noticed that using both wheels as traction was a bit more difficult to turn the snowblower so I leave it with only one wheel for the traction with the pin on the main axle.

The general shape and size of the chute is a factor here too I think. I lined my old rectangular short chute for my craftsman with puck board, which rounded the sides and made it a smoother transition like alot of newer blowers have. Waiting for some snow to try it out!

My Troy-Bilt Storm 2620 with its long chute has no issues throwing heavy snow more than 35 feet and it has an ABS chute with no impeller augment (yet - parts on order). When I first got my 1966 Ariens snowblower and got it running it plugged up easily and blew powder snow about 8 feet from the machine and wet snow about 2 feet. I thought this snowblower needs help. used conveyor belt on all four paddles on the fan that made a huge improvement. Distance now about 25 feet wet or dry snow huge improvement. Modified the short chute more straight up so the snow speed doesn’t slow down as much. Distance now is about 35+feet. i’m gonna have to contact that guy and see if I can get a newer chute off at 80s like in your video. Thanks for the info. I’ll have to contact him. I also have a Honda snowblower with tracks. I let my son have it because I like my old Ariens better. it’s actually kind of cool blowing snow with an old antique blower that now 57 years old. Another thing I like about the Ariens as the shoot turns about 200° from stop to stop allowing you to blow the snow behind you if you want.

Just spray the chute and blower and rotors with ceramic car spray and I added heavy rubber extensions on the rotor blades that slightly rub the wall. This avoids rock jambs and throws the snow twice the distance and the wet snow will not stick in the front rotor.

I am using an old 55 gallon barrel for the steel to make my chute longer. The metal in the one I'm using is actually thicker than most 55 gallon barrels and it's actually a little thicker than my blower chute, so it will work well for this mod. It's kind tricky to bend but it will hold up quite well. So now with impeller rubbers installed and a longer chute I should be able to blow the snow out of my yard! I'm thinking about swapping the stock pulley on the engine to a larger diameter for the blower to blow it even farther, but that may have to come after a larger motor swap. We'll see.

Of course, I'll have to prepare my machine for storage. JB, I'm looking forward to your lawn equipment videos. There is always the chance of a late snowstorm. Typically our weather is about 8 hours later than your weather in WNY. If the forecast calls for any snow accumulation, it's the lake effect snow from Lake Ontario. Usually, once the snow gets to the Adirondacks, the total snow totals are substantially less. Have a great day. From your friends in Highgate,Vermont.

The transition from the impeller discharge is poor on some machines. The impeller impulse is delayed several degrees throwing the snow across the chute opening rather than up the chute. If distance is not a concern then it is not an issue. The short Ariens chutes may not have performed well because of transition. The chute transition was poor because the chute was sort of added on rather than designed into the unit. The blower is essentially a centrifugal pump and the discharge {volute} must be perfect to prevent turbulence.
Also the results for one type of snow may differ from another. Ice crystals would be sort of a self-cleaning and self lubricating element in some snow.

The early snowblowers were the product of inventor/ innovators. This resulted in many of the components being overbuilt and some parts under built (bushings). As some of the companies grew they employed engineers which has led to good things like design improvement and bad thing like adequate or inexpensive products. Many like myself are forced by mother nature and geography and plowing routes to purchase the more expensive professional machines. I am in the Lake Effect zone at the east end of Lake Ontario. My major problem is not the amount of snow but the fact that the plow comes up my side of the road first which means I get 2/3 of the snow. I have to clear my driveway and the crosswalks for the kids to get to the school down the street. Most of the time I can clear the sidewalks and upper driveway with my Wovel [wheeled shovel] Even with the professional machine clearing the plow berms is a challenge. When I was a kid I had to shovel with a rusted coal shovel to clear get my dad out in time for work. All before going to school where I often had to wade through snow over my knees. No snow days back then. But that is life in the Lake Effect zones.

Since I mentioned bushings. What is called an auger on a snowblower is actually a harvester as well. While bushings can be fine for most slow speed augers the forces in the snowblower demand a very robust bushing or a bearing. As we have seen with the bushings of old - there is a directional component of weight and torque that has elongated many a bushing. What you need for bearings/bushings is dependent upon how much property you have to cover and how much snow you get.
On some machines I have questioned the alloy of the bushings compared with the quality of the metal in the shaft. We used to say that some of the machines were made out of recycled beer cans because of the poor quality.
Also - the blade tip angle on the impeller is critical and must be matched to the machine's transition to the chute. It is like the ignition timing - the impulse from the impeller must come at exactly the right time.

"better" covers a lot of things, however, I would still say, "yes".
More control cannot even be argued. For distance, there will be an optimal, but I think it would have to get _very_ long before you lose distance.
I know a guy with a modern Ariens, and he added a nearly 2' extension to the deflector. He probably has nearly 6' of chute length now. He swears by it last I heard.
Where arguments can get more difficult are features like Honda's throat collar which will increase control, but also increase plugging with wet snow.
Honda and Yamaha are the two best walk behind consumer grade snowblowers you can get, just way out of my budget.
Even at that, tho, there are Honda owners who will torch that collar out because they don't like it. Some things are just trade offs.
For bonus points, get into multi staged deflectors(which Honda and Yamaha also have, and I think Toro may have done on a newer model). ;)

I love so many of these comments I've read tons of them.
A lot of people get it.. just because you can do something doesn't mean that it's supposed to be done..
Engineers in R&D department usually make snow blowers, and shoots based on the correct mathematical specifications that work best for that machine for longevity, pressure on the motor and everything else..
I trust the R&D departments and the engineers that know a thousand times more than us as regular people.
They would make us look silly with our knowledge.

@@GarageGear I would definitely say with the modern machines and the past 10 or 15 years the R&D department tested everything out more than we could ever imagine and do certain things for a reason...
There's so many things to take in consideration when building snow blowers.
But people like you guys don't have to worry because at least you know how to fix something if it breaks something happens to the engine, or the gears you could fix them.
As for other people who don't have that luxury stick with what the snow blower company decided making everything the way it is. They spent millions of dollars developing everything with very highly intelligent R&D department engineers they know what they're doing.
But it's always fun to experiment.
      ;)

    • @muzikmon2267
      @muzikmon2267 2 года назад +1

@@GarageGear Also keep in mind it's not always better to have a snow blower that there was something further.. You can't really change the distance that much.
For instance where I live It's much easier to throw the snow a shorter distance especially when you have sidewalks.. sometimes too much throwing power can work against you.
It's not always a good thing anyways. I think these snow blowers in general that throw about 40 to 45 ft is plenty for any situation and you could turn the deflector down to lower the throwing distance pretty significantly. Throwing 50 ft 10 ft more is really not much of an advantage anyways.
Then you have to look at how much of the snow is actually being thrown 50 ft The bulk of it is not even coming close to 50 ft..
That would be a whole other science project what's the bulk of the snow being thrown with each. I would say with the modern snow blowers it's all about the same.
Then of course you have the type of snow and all that.
The snow blowers are just fine the way that they are. They're good for any situation..
But I understand people like to do experiments and it's good for people's channels..
But I don't think I would recommend something that could possibly hurt there snow blowers.. I would put a disclaimer in front every time. Cuz literally could be doing damage.. especially the impeller kit. That's putting a lot my pressure on the machine..

I am doing a chute mod on my blower right now where I am using a chute off an older blower, cutting it in half, and then affixing to my existing 19" factory chute. I am also going to line the inside of the modded chute using Krazy Carpet material to see if that helps with the resistance. Question - what is the length of that longer Ariens chute you installed? Also do you think that going too long would actually hinder the distance..ie the motor power would not be sufficient for the chute length? I was thinking increasing the existing chute length from 19" to 24" would be sufficient...or would you go even longer? Its a 10 hp 24" cut unit. BTW - Love your channel!
