That looks like a second. I just purchased the R4840 from Home Depot about 30 minutes ago. Still in the box in my garage. Hopefully there are no issues. Price wise it was a good price. MSRP was $229 marked down to $199.99. With the veteran's 10% discount out the door was $179.xx. Hopefully there are no minor or major issues. If not, back to HD it goes.

Sounds like a really good price.
I've heard they got the production issues worked out, so you should be in good shape.
I use my sander as often as I can, no issues other than the operator now.
      Enjoy your new tool.

I'm glad the repair wasn't too difficult and the supplies owners manual has a good diagram. The hardest part of the repair was getting the cable clamps off the power cord.
It is surprising that a number of these got through assembly. A lot of people have had the same issue. Probably a lot more don't even realize they have an issue.

Your review actually made me more comfortable buying it. It was nice to see how simple a machine it was after you tore it apart. I love how big the top is and its probably the biggest selling point over the other brands. I thought the dust collection was really good too. My only complaint is the noise it makes. It drones, rattles and vibrates more than I expected. I don't think anything is loose. It was hard to tell from the video but I feel like even fixed yours has the same sound. But I figure its a fairly inexpensive power tool and I have my earplugs in anyway.

    • @theNextProject
      @theNextProject  2 года назад

Jeff, thanks for watching the video and glad it helped you when making a purchase choice.
As you mentioned, it is a reasonably simple machine, and the supplied exploded diagram that comes in the manual is good reference too.
Since I posted this video, I've been contacted by a few people and also found others who had the exact issues as shown in my video. It appears there was a "batch" of these that got through QC undetected. Luckily, its not a catastrophic issue, and can be resolved easily-ish.
There are a few strange vibrations from this machine, which may not have been present in the previous model, which was largely a big plastic box with a deck and mechanism attached.
For me, the most annoying noise is the cross-bolt in a tube used for adjusting the table angle. It's a half-design, resulting in a really annoying sound. I initially used masking tape on the long cross-bolt then slid it inside the tube-space, and that did a good job of killing the vibration. I've since replaced the tape with some shrink tubing which works better. Other ideas would probably also quite that vibration.
The dust collection is really good, at least for me. The overall noise of the sander and shop-vac is a bit extreme, but as you mentioned - hearing protection...all is well.
I've used the heck out of this thing already, and even though it needed some repair, I'm very pleased with the tool.
Hope all is well. Be safe and take care!

    • @jeffjohnstonmn

I re-read my post and it sounded more negative than I wanted. Although I haven't used it a ton I do love it and would buy it again! I can do more quality work with it than I can by hand or trying to go sideways with an orbital sander. The noise really isn't a problem and if they made it more sturdy to dampen the noise then it would weigh more and be more expensive. Good tip on the shrink tube!
I agree that the dust collection is stellar and the functionality is amazing. The top is luxurious for a benchtop model.

For those considering one of these type machines. Buy the Triton brand. It locks the tilting table on both sides with twist knobs. If not the Triton then any brand that locks on both sides. This only locks on one side. I bought mine to be able to sand to a line after rough cutting and it works great.

    • @theNextProject
      @theNextProject  Год назад +2

Jeff, thanks for watching and the comment on the Triton brand sander as well.
Before I purchased this model, I had compared and contrasted a number of sanders, the Triton appears to be a good machine, and appears identical to a number of others on the market. Bauer, Grizzly and Triton all appear to have identical specs and design, possibly all from one manufacturer.
The Ridgid sander does have a single locking knob for the tilt table, but it locks both sides at the same time by drawing down on a rod that runs side-to-side. So far, it hasn't been an issue - so far (fingers crossed).
      Good luck with your projects.

      Hi Bob, thanks for watching!
The sander is working better than new, lol.
I'm glad the thing was designed to be serviced. So many new items are truly disposable, they snap, or glue together. This was actually a pretty easy repair, once I figured out how they put it together.
If I had extra time, I would have taken (shipped) it back, but I needed to use it right out of the box - which didn't happen. I've used it a bunch since fixing it, and it is working well, makes my other projects a bit easier.
I hope you are well, take care my friend!

I had the same issue as yours, with a different result.
I bought this at Home Depot, unboxed it, and there was a loud rattle inside before even turning it on. Looking closely, the coupling rod for the oscillating drive was not even screwed into the drive motor assembly, the bottom of the rod was just flopping around inside the case. The shoulder screw for the coupling was laying in the bottom of the box. Just the same issue you had, but rather than try to fix it myself, I brought it back to Home Depot, and the 2nd one had the same issue. Tried a 3rd one at the store before taking it home, it had a major vibration inside and the motor was pretty clearly loose. Quality control is just not there on this model yet. Read the reviews on Home Depot, there are lots of others with major quality issues right out of the box. Never even got to use this model yet as all three at my local store were defective.
Not sure if I'll try a 4th from shipping or pick up the older Ridgid model at another store near me. The older one is actually more expensive now.
    /Dave

Dave, thanks for watching and misery loves company - I guess...
Anyway, sorry to hear of all the issues you had too.
It seems whomever is to thread that shoulder screw in, hasn't been trained to do so, ha.
I haven't had the vibration inside the motor (yet), but as I pointed out in the video, I did have a vibration coming from the adjustable table lock bolt/tube.
It's really sad to hear Ridgid is having these issues. The previous model has had pretty good reviews overall, and I'd like to believe this model could as well. They just need to unbox all those "new" machines and have some QC checks done. Things like this hurt the entire brand name - sadly.
Now that I've corrected my sander, it has run really well. I'm impressed with the dust collection and the overall "build". But that wasn't the case right out of the box, as we've witnessed.
I hope you have better luck with whatever sander you end up getting.
Thanks for the comment, be safe and take care!

@@theNextProject Well, misery loves company and some people are gluttons for punishment. After I posted this last night, I checked out the pricing for other models and found the old Ridgid model EB4424 actually costs more than the new model and its parts are all discontinued, so forget about a warranty. So I took the gamble and ordered yet another 4480, and it magically arrived overnight. Unboxed it just now and bam, same exact issue. The shoulder screw and washer were in the bag and the coupling rod was flopping around loose. I called support and they told me, literally, they are really busy and only 3 people there, so the manager would call me back tomorrow. LOL... OK. So now I can either wait for that, or try to fix it myself.... At least I've got a nice video guide if I decide to fix it instead of waiting. Thanks again for posting this. Its very helpful to know I am not alone and crazy... just a little gullible :)

Probably the hardest part of disassembly was getting the cable keepers out of the motor housing. I just used some channel-locks to squeeze it enough...so not difficult, but that was about as hard as it got.
      Please keep me posted.

@@theNextProject Well somehow the Oscillating Belt Sander Elves visited my garage and magically the coupling rod got re-attached. i have no idea how it happened but I definitely still have my factory warranty still intact, as far as Ridgid knows. Now that it mysteriously started working, I've found its pretty impressive at its actual task of sanding.
I got the table a nice 90 to the belt, set the stop bracket up at 90 to the length too, and sanded down some poplar cutoff pieces, they came out perfectly square and flat. Dust collection was good too, as your video shows, it connects to my 2.5" shop vac and left just a little bit of dust on the small end of the table. All in all its good at sanding, once the Quality Control fairies sprinkled their magic coupling rod dust on it.
I did talk to someone at Ridgid earlier but they seemed overwhelmed at the complex task of taking my name and number, and the "manager will call me tomorrow" doesn't inspire confidence that this will get high level attention, but I'll sure try to let them know that "The 4th time's a charm" isn't a solid marketing campaign, or maybe they should re-hire the guy at the factory who was in charge of the coupling rod screw.
Anyway, all's well that ends well, I suppose. Thanks for the video, if I ever need to re-attach the coupler, I'll know what to do, wink wink.

Glad you got that sorted out. This newer version seems to be slightly cheaper in price than the prior version at HD. I do wonder if this new incarnation is better or basically the same?

This new sandwer was listed below the cost of the previous mode where I live too. But the previous model was also listed as discontinued. I've heard about the "blow-out" pricing you mentioned, didn't find it near me.
I also looked at the WEN/Bauer/Triton/Grizzly model 99.9% identical across the brands (re-brands). Some of those were more expensive than this Ridgid. The biggest thing that made me choose the Ridgid was the motor, it is 6amp, as the others are 3amp. Ridgid also has a slightly longer oscillating stroke.
I think any of these benchtop Sanders will likely have issues and virtues. At this time, I've already used this machine a bunch, and glad I finally picked one up.

Thanks for the great video documenting a serious issue with this tool. Same issue here, right out of the box from HD. Incredible! I've never had to fix a brand new tool before. I can't imagine how this can happen. Is the screw just that loose that shipping eventually jars it out? Seems to be both a quality control and basic design flaw. Which makes me wonder ... I've done the repair now too, but how long will that screw hold until it comes out again? Have you been using it regularly since repairing? And have you had to re-repair at all yet? Or is it still holding fine? Also, I ended up pretty severely damaging my cable keepers in the hardest step of the repair ... can you think of any issues that that might cause in the long run if those cables aren't being held super tight in their holes?? Thanks again from a new subscriber!

      -- '50 Ford ? --
I've heard from others who have had the exact same issue with the shoulder screw laying in the box...
I don't think it is a issue with use, more an issue at time of original assembly.
Someone wasn't trained, or was out sick....
      Sloppy Ridgid QC, no excuse.
I also wonder if a lot of these sanders are out there running, and the owner doesn't even know there is a screw missing.
My sander did function, and if I hadn't noticed the rattle (and the loose screw).... I'd probably run it until something failed.
I use my sander a couple times a week so far, maybe an hour on-and-off at a time. No issues at this point.
I do need to address that adjustable table lock rod/tube, it rattles and buzzes. I'll probably just give it a single wrap of electrical tape and put it back together to see if that dampens the vibration noise.
Your cable clamps, or lack of, should be fine unless something accidentally snags the wires from the outside.
I hope we both have years of trouble free use going forward.
Thanks for the message and good questions.

Replying to the cable keepers. If the metal around the cable opening has any sharp points at all it will eventually cut into the cables and cause a short (that's the least worry) and could be even worse. I would call customer service for a replacement part. Frankly I wouldn't have kept any of the one's that were defective, I would have called for an immediate replacement, that's how i got a free Dewalt DW735x I called to complain about what looked like a flaw in the metal, (Amazon) offered to replace it then said I could keep the original one at no cost, Sad thing is there was no defect, it turned out to be bad lighting, When I called to let them no about my mistake they said it was already dealt with so just keep it and that's not the first time this has happened. Legitimate defective products Like my Whirlpool Double oven had several defects, I was pretty upset that they took 3 months to try to fix the issues which at that time I was really angry, Whirlpool had just come out with there new model of the same oven by this time so instead of replacing it they gave me a full refund plus the replacement parts. You can't beat that, btw that happened 2 months ago in Feb. It's worth complaining, you never know when you'll end up with a free item for doing so. Final point about HD. Never buy major appliances from them, they only give you 48 hours to make a claim (I called them about my first issue the day I got it) and they say you have to contact the manufacturer first, (that's an outright lie) so even thought I reported the ovens as defective they took over 3 months to deal with it. I was told by the serviceman that had I bought the same thing from low's they have 14 days to report problems and they don't mess around they will replace it quickly without all the hassles I got from HD.

I like the idea that the new model has a slightly more powerful motor and improved dust collection. I don't blame HD, they are in the middle of the issue. BUT, they could refuse to sell the item. That would force Ridgid to either address the issue, or look for a new brick-n-mortar to sell their products.
I was originally looking for the "old" model, but it was discontinued at that time.
It appeared Ridgid was dumping the old inventory around the country and pushing the "new" model.
It now appears the old model is again available. My head is spinning.
Overall, I'm happy with the new model (once I fixed it), but Ridgid should open every box and correct the issue before being shipped from the warehouse.

@@theNextProject Thanks so much for the rapid response. I love HD, having so many positive experiences with them over the years. I'm sure they will eventually get to the bottom of the issue and fix it. The fact that they have brought the previous model back, is probably their first step in the process. My guess is that I will probably go for the previous model. I usually do not do high volume production work is one horsepower less on the motor will not have an impact on my workflow. Spending the majority of my career in Computer OEM volume sales for major manufacturers, I have been on the receiving end of situations like this. It's not pretty, curtailed my customer's product production, significantly impacting their bottom line for months at a time. I guess that is why I am over critical in situations like this.

Sooo,is this an improvement over the original or just cheaper and a way to increase profits. I own alot of Rigid tools bought years ago and it seems like the new ones aren’t as industrial. I’ve been a contractor for 35 years and had good luck with their lifetime warranty service,to me it’s a “no brainer “. Some reviews of the original design said the sander isn’t square to the table and dust collection was poor. Hoping a new design would improve but it seems the opposite. Now there are copycat versions that might be the way to go. Wen,Triton and a few others out of the same factory. Great review.👍

      Kent, thanks for watching!
I can't say it's better than its predecessor, but it is a totally different approach/design. Overall I like the sander, now that I've been using it.
I'm actually pretty happy with the dust collection, works better than I expected. But their are other issues that should have been corrected before this sander was released to the public.
My biggest issue with the sander is the lack of QC during manufacturing. There were a few things that shouldn't have happened in a "new" tool, more like a "refurb". But, I've corrected a couple mfg shortcomings and any other issues are merely cosmetic. I'm not saying there should be any issues right out of the box, but I'm lucky I was able to fix what was needed and get on with my life. I really needed the sander to work that day, so no time to send it back.
Ridgid really needs to review their assembly practices and get that corrected asap. Not good for the brand to have things like this going out the door.
Hope all is well for you, be safe and take care!

I'm still using this machine, and haven't had any issues since I fixed the QC issues.
I'm also hearing that the manufacturer appears to have corrected some of the issues since, doesn't help me, but will hopefully be better for all future buyers.
Probably the only gripe I have with this machine now, it the coating they used on the table.
I'm guessing it's powder coated, and it seems to rub a little dirty color on some lighter woods.
      Otherwise, I'm happy.

Agreed, Ridgid really dropped the ball, but more on the manufacturing and QC end. I don't have any real issues with the design, but the assembly control is very disappointing.
RIDGID should have pulled all and done a through inspection of each product to save brand value, but it's likely some bean counters saw that as being too expensive.
While I'll use this product for years, til it drops, it is hard to consider buying another Ridgid product based on this product.
That's bad for the brand as a whole.
I had reviewed, compared and contrasted this Ridgid, the Triton, Bauer, Grizzly, and Wen bench top belt Sanders. The Ridgid stood out with the most power. The others are all visually identical and have identical specs (not a bad thing). It appears the Bauer, Wen, Triton and Grizzly are all manufactured using the same template, maybe not a bad thing... The old version of this Ridgid had been discontinued, so I purchased this new version. Now the old version is back again.
      My timing sucks.

I agree, that screw should have had loctite, and strange it doesn't have that little blue dot on the treads.

That machine is made for crafting people.
So if there is a screw not screwed in, I'd say crafting people should have the competence to screw in the screw themselves.
Heck, I don't have the money to buy such fine tools.
I have a project in mind. I one day want to turn a cheap Harley-Benton ST, pretty old model, still a headstock that looks a lot like F, into a hard tail. Get rid of the finish and glue in a custom-made piece of into the void. Rout away some wood first.
So I'd need a router and such a sander to make the piece of wood fit.
Edit. I think it would work with the jigsaw. Only have to be pretty careful.

I already have a bridge and middle pu. But the new, blank Chinese pick guard will get holes for bridge and middle pu. And then the slot for the lever, one volume and one tone, kill switch, which I can place wherever I want. With a 5 way super lever switch, and two single coils, you can have A, B, ABp, ABs, ABsoop positions. The same you could do with one humbucker and a 5 way super lever switch.

Sorry you got another poorly assembled sander. I'm surprised they haven't corrected this by now.
As for wobbly, I had heard another person mention that. My sander is very solid, so I'm not sure where the wobble is. It the metal frame loose, broken weld points, missing screws?
Again, sorry to hear you got a lemon.

    • @JP-ec8fe
      @JP-ec8fe 2 года назад +1

@@theNextProject it looks like the rear support bar is simply screwed on and doesn’t actually completely touch the uprights of the frame. This allows for wobble. I have a welder and could simply tac weld it but I shouldn’t have to on a new $300 sander. I’m going to return it and just get the previous model. This unit was built 06/21 according to the tag on the box.

@@JP-ec8fe Ah, I know the cross bar you mention. They may have fixed that a bit on the sander I have, as it is attached reasonably well, but a weld would be better ...
I don't recall, but I think my sander has an early '22 mfg date.
At the time of my purchase, I had hoped to find the previous model as well. None available in my area.
I had also compared the Bauer, WEN, Triton, and Grizzley sanders, all of which share identical specs/design to each other. The reason I opted for the new Ridgid was a slightly longer stroke and higher watt motor. Who knew there would be such common mfg issues.
The company Ridgid uses to mfg must have fired the QC department, yet shipped sanders anyway. Not good for the brand name.

Terry, thanks for watching some, all, or whatever amount you watched.
I'm not sure which 30 seconds you found useful, but that would have been good feedback, imo.
Basically, this video is a general warning regarding the new Ridgid sander.
It highlights what is an all to common issue with this new sander. Offers the option of sending it back and waiting, or fixing the issue and getting on with your projects. Some people may not even know they have a defective sander.
This video also points out a few questionable details, that are less than desirable for a new product. In my case they aren't issues that will stop me from getting things done.
Also presents a very basic review of general performance, I was actually pleased with the dust collection.
I would expect each individual to have somewhat different expectations. For me, this tool fell short, but once repaired has been working well.
Overall worth the money and irritation of the needed repair, which took more than 30 seconds.
