My neighbor bought a second-hand Toyota Prius 3 years ago. It's a hybrid car and the battery conked out 3 months ago. Now the Toyota service station in Chennai says that it has to import the battery from Japan and it will cost over Rs.2.00 lakhs and take 2 or 3 months. People wanting to buy the Honda City hybrid should give careful consideration to cost of all consumables.

My friends who opted for DSG cars had to pay to lakhs of rupees for a new DSG when the existing one developed faults. I am just asking customers to be cautious. We all know how customers who invested Rs.20.00 lakhs plus in the Skoda Kushaq suffered since the vehicle would inexplicably stop repeatedly.

But imagine how much the initial customers suffered, including some of my friends and relatives, who happily bought a 1.5 L turbo from Kushaq and had to repeatedly keep their new vehicle at the service centre for days on end. That's why experts suggest waiting for 6 months or a year after a vehicle is launched so that initial glitches are sorted out.

I would like to share my colleague's experience owning a hybrid in Sri Lanka. He has toyota aqua (hatchback version of the prius). He had done about 1.2lak kms in 4 years. The battery pack failed in the 5th year, cost of replacement of the battery was 3 laks Sri lankan currency (its about 1.75laks Indian rs). As per his experience the amount of money he saved on fuel has been spent on replacing the battery. He was very skeptical about hybrids actually benefitting in the long run.

I second your thoughts. Anyways I was going to cancel my hybrid booking. First I had booked for petrol zx cvt. But later when ev was launched they said it would be 20L on road. So cancelled petrol and opted for hybrid. Now they said 23.24L. Not worth. So decided yesterday I would cancel.
The price difference between hybrid and the base v model nearly 12 lakh rupees don't forget that new cars attract 45% of GST so if considered to your old used Honda city which will save more than 16 lakh rupees keep in the bank the interest will take care of the fuel bill and still save money for maintenance

I own city I like this hybrid too but not a practical choice one should go for second hand car if you need a car so badly and by 2025 buy an electric ⚡️ car then there will be plenty of options and good infrastructure too.
Govt should reduce taxes at least for hybrids as EV for our population may take more time to be easily available for charging and also be as quick as filling petrol/diesel

Yes. I totally agree with what you said... I was planning to book the eHEV Honda City but calculated the same in our desi style, so buying a Honda eHEV not making sence.... Instead it pushed me towards MG ZS EV.... Or wait till Diwali for the Toyota RAV4 ( D22 ) or Suzuki's A cross (YFG) a strong Hybrid in SUV rather than a sedan hybrid car.
My Honda City 4th Gen iVTEC V-MT easily gives me 18+ on highway rides. Going the Hybrid route will mean spending another 10-12L upfront. That is too much of a premium to save 20-25% in fuel costs. With NO Support from Government whatsoever it just does not make sense to upgrade. A quick illustration: We need to run 5000 to 6000 km PER MONTH just to break even on the high upfront costs. Add in the higher maintenance due to complex parts the returns diminish further. Unless the car is used as a Taxi it does NOT make any economical sense.

Just a thought: Wouldn't the City Diesel manual make more sense over the City hybrid? The torquey-drive is present in Diesel cars. Also, the average would easily be 20 kmpl.
I drive a Jazz i-Dtec since 2016 and it's 1,27,000 on the odo. I'm pretty sure the City diesel will be very frugal and has descent driving dynamics. But, I'm not sure the Honda Diesels could improve the NVH levels. It's way behind Hyundai/Kia 1.5 crdi. But, I can't comment about the Hyundai 1.5 D 's reliability.
I own Honda Amaze teaser old model but facelift from the introductory model interiors a same like Honda City the diesel model gives mileage of at least 13 in the city only for the school and Bank run away so close and so less of use but the mileage is very acceptable on highways it easily crosses 21 and the engine sound is absolutely acceptable as diesel because in the midway facelift they have increase insulation and given the required result I purchase this car as a second hand for 5 lakh rupees so I own Honda Amaze from outside but a city from inside at 5 lakh rupees diesel car

But, the Jazz felt premium and the mid range performance and the gearing was better and the newer jazz (2016) was more frugal too. Present Amaze diesel should be kickass. Add to the fact that showrooms will enforce the voiding of battery warranty and take the option of any sort of third party additions or servicing. It may happen that different showroom service centers may take a different stance but that would not be uniform. Was enthusiastic about this car but no longer.

All good sir. But you did not speak about the battery life of that car. It charges and discharge fast. What is the battery life of that and what would be replacement cost. Regular CVT honda city is around 15.5 lakhs in road price, if I keep it long with me for the life time, it won't event cost additional 8 lakhs of rupees for fuel and maintainance. Moreover power of petrol in terms of BHP is more. Then what is the big reason of buying this hybrid.
I believe the strong hybrid car starts using power from the hybrid battery and if that is discharged after prolonged non use, the car will not start (as learnt on google). Please clarify

What about launching this hybrid version in lower model ? this can brings under budget of many indian customer who looks for mileage and practical features.
People will not buy a small hybrid as small cars already offer good mileage. Hybrid will only enhance the mileage but not by much and more over you won't get any storage space from a small hybrid car. The added initial cost will further hinder people from buying small hybrid.
Diesel cars are reducing in India so diesel might be discontinued soon in few years and diesel is more polluting so for saving environment go for hybrid
Hi Mr. Gagan Modi.. I admire your work. However, on this point I have a different opinion. City hybrid will be placed in a segment above City petrol. It'll be a relatively economical car (fuel efficiency) for those customers whose budget exceeds 20 lacs. It'll be in the league of Jeep Compass.
I own the city 5th gen zx CVT, I cost me 18 lakhs and have been using it for the last year and the fuel efficiency is not good, Im averaging 9.5 kmpl in the city. I have driven it 16k km my average has been around the same throughout the past year, tho on the highway I get 17kmpl which is great. as per my analysis people who actually drive 1lakh km in 5-7 years mostly they will be driving on highways, and 17kmpl is great economy, so ya 19.5 lakhs ex-showroom is a bit over priced. and one more thing ppl who are doing a lot of highway run need boot space and it takes a hit there aswell. and in the last one year of ownership the car is not great, its reliable and all but the interior plastic trims are a bit flimsy which is ok in a billow 20lakh car but not at all in a car that costs 24lakhs on road. I actually switched From the 4th gen city, I really loved that car, if you find a good deal on that used with good records you can go for that and get an cog kit done to it. I have done that to my old one and it works like charm, not much difference in power and its a cvt aswell. for traveling in city and even on highways when alone best solution. and in overall I rate the 4th gen better than the 5th. so you can pick up the 4th gen new aswell which I actually got better milage in city mind you

Replacement cost is a major factor that has to be considered in case of EV and Hybrid cars.

Diesel cars are reducing in India so diesel might be discontinued soon in few years and diesel is more polluting so for saving environment go for hybrid

City hybrid will be placed in a segment above City petrol. It'll be a relatively economical car (fuel efficiency) for those customers whose budget exceeds 20 lacs. It'll be in the league of Jeep Compass.
but does it have enough features to be considered in that segment with compromised boot space ?

I own the city 5th gen zx CVT, I cost me 18 lakhs and have been using it for the last year and the fuel efficiency is not good, Im averaging 9.5 kmpl in the city. I have driven it 16k km my average has been around the same throughout the past year, tho on the highway I get 17kmpl which is great. as per my analysis people who actually drive 1lakh km in 5-7 years mostly they will be driving on highways, and 17kmpl is great economy, so ya 19.5 lakhs ex-showroom is a bit over priced. and one more thing ppl who are doing a lot of highway run need boot space and it takes a hit there aswell. and in the last one year of ownership the car is not great, its reliable and all but the interior plastic trims are a bit flimsy which is ok in a billow 20lakh car but not at all in a car that costs 24lakhs on road. I actually switched From the 4th gen city, I really loved that car, if you find a good deal on that used with good records you can go for that and get an cog kit done to it. I have done that to my old one and it works like charm, not much difference in power and its a cvt aswell. for traveling in city and even on highways when alone best solution. and in overall I rate the 4th gen better than the 5th. so you can pick up the 4th gen new aswell which I actually got better milage in city mind you
