+Tim Toots Not necessarily. 1997 wasn't entirely to my liking. Same for one of the more recent tours since I last caught them in 2010. But, overall, DC excels where others fail simply because he clearly takes the time to tune his kit properly to produce those amazing tones. Even his cymbals set him apart from most for their clarity.
that should be the goal of a cover imo. To change it into something new, rather than copy the original. to be fair, people like Max Niessl and LeoBassCovers serve a great purpose by transcribing songs to the exact, finest details in order to help others learn, but I think beyond that official covers should attempt to twist and redefine the original song. Bro! You are a god amongst men! I have been looking for the lyrics to the first verse forever. I know Spanish, and I am sitting here like.... "Is this dude Maynard covering this in Spanish! WTF!?"
Tool does amazing covers. Everyone is a tribute to the original song as they make their remake their own. I always thought that In-A-Gada-Da Vida would make a great remake. Lots of music opportunity for the band to play and layer and Maynard could update it by singing the original lyrics "In the garden of Eden".
Eric Bradford you know I’ve thought about that with Black Sabbath’s war pigs. I’d like to see Tool throw a psychedelic vibe to that song, and they could also use the original lyrics from the first version, Walpurgis. I think that would be really awesome.
Jerry Dodge yes used to listen to Third Eye put my head down by the stereo during the head change and I felt three separate levels in my brain all spinning simultaneously in opposite directions pretty cool

This isn't hundred percent accurate. Look at all of the Bob Dylan covers in the 60's and early 70's. Though they didn't play solo acoustic guitar and harmonica they did follow the original songs almost to a "T", just with a band and more instrumentation. The originals were extremely well written songs and there was no real need to change them. But Dylan was a bad singer, mediocre guitarist and often recorded without a and or with a band who at best were just average. Therefore, Johnny Cash or Jimi Hendrix doing a Dylan song instantly made it sound 20x better, like "All Along the Watchtower" by Hendrix, or "It ain't Me" by Cash. Both of those songs are extremely iconic, but not the Dylan versions. His versions are objectively worse, and I think he knew this. I think it's why he often worked with other artists, especially ones he had admired like Cash, because he knew they could elevate his songs to another level.
