Nice...... mine is from 1946 in .300 Savage. One of the last rifles shipped from the Utica, NY factory before they closed and moved to Mass. They made about 20,000 99's that year, while simultaneously shutting down parts of the plant and moving their machinery to the other site. Savage was the only WWII wartime contractor that consistently met their projected quotas in time, and were 80% ahead of scheduled delivery during the entire duration of the war; making various machine guns for U.S. Army Air Corps and Marine Corps bombers and fighter planes respectively. After the war, they no longer needed all the manufacturing space, so decided to close the Utica plant. It's cliche' these days to say, "they don't make 'em like that anymore", but these rifles fall solidly into that category. Mine is 73 years old, and is still my favorite hunting rifle after owning it since 1976. This rifle was designed to put meat on the table........... and it still does. God Bless America! Some day, we'll find our way back to the roots from whence we came......

I got a Savage 99 in .243 for a great price at the place I work. The last owner passed away, he was a big time hunter and the gun came with a lot of hunting ammo for it. As Im moving from MA to NH, I will be able to use this gun for hunting so the path can continue. Also, the rotary magazine is amazing! No worries about spitzer bullets! My friend are all AR lovers, great gun for sure but they dont seem to like anything else. Im completely the opposite, I like lever guns and old military rifles like the K31, Mosin...

I also prefer levers and MILSURP to ARs and AKs. In part, because M16/M4 was my assigned weapon for much of my Army career. Love my Savage 99A in .358 Win, no scope, instead rear peep sight

One thing I have noticed from shooting my brothers .308 Savage 99 is that the point of impact is effected a lot by the way the fore end is held. If the fore end is held lightly the gun shoots high, if held down firmly it shoots more to the sights. I suspect this is due to the light weight of the front end of the barrel.

That's a nice rifle. In my area guys run all kinds of stuff. Bolts, Pumps, semi autos. In Upstate New York Adirondacks my crew runs 30-30, 308, 30-06, 35... open sights or low power scope. Most of the shots are under 100 yards. Believe it or not I harvested more deer with a 20 gauge shot gun.

I've had two Savage 1899's, one was a very early gun, it had the small rectangular cocking indicator, made around 1906 or so and it was in .303 Savage. Back then I wasn't handloading and that's about when .303 Savage was discontinued, and that was also before the internet and when your local shop didn't have it, they didn't have and there was no other way of getting it, so I sold it. Recently I found another, a 1899H carbine in .30-30, made around 1924. The gun is lighter and out shoots my Model 94 Winchester with ease. Here in the Northeast, the Savage 1899 and later 99 are very popular guns, at least they were once. I've seen lots of old hunting photos, and lots of them have someone holding an 1899. We had a guy in deer camp who had a Savage 99 with a detachable magazine in .308. He's killed more than a few deer with it. They are a fine gun. My grail gun is a Savage 1899 with an octagon barrel in .38-55.

The Savage 99 is a very grand looking firearm. I've always thought the Ruger No.1 resembled it. My great grandfather bought one in the 40's, in .300 Savage the same as yours, and used it for hunting his whole life. It was the talk of the town as far as guns went in our family. I remember being a kid and admiring it in his handmade oak rifle cabinet in their living room. Brings back a lot of good memories. Nothing they make nowadays could compare to these old wood and steel pieces.

I have a 99R that my Dad purchased new in the 1950's. It is in .300 Savage and was one of the first 99's to come from the factory drilled and tapped for scope mounts. The .300 Savage, in my experience, is the perfect cartridge for Upper Michigan Whitetail bucks. I still enjoy taking the old girl out in November. The only real drawback is the length of the rifle but only if you hunt from a normal size blind. The 7.62X51 NATO and .308 Winchester were developed from the old .300.

Great rifle the 99. I have a 300sav similar to yours and an older 303sav straight stock crescent butt. I put a marbles tang sight on the 303 which gave me the ability to lower my point of aim. Seems to fit beautifully on the gun as well. Keep up the good work I enjoy your videos very much!

I have a Model 99 EG like that in 250-3000 (250 Savage) and I really love that rifle. I found an old Stith scope mount for it, which allowed me to mount a 4X Weaver scope without drilling any holes in the gun. That rifle has always been more effective on deer than pure ballistics indicate that it should be. I have killed quite a number of South Texas whitetails with it, and have never had to shoot more than once. It is so easy to shoot accurately that it is a very effective deer rifle.

I read the history on the 99, It was originally designed for the government when the Craig Jorgensen was going to be replaced, The engineering to work out the bugs took a year longer than expected and it missed out because it was way to late. But when this rifle came out it was well accepted. My uncle bought a 300 in this model and took it to Alaska back to his cabin on Kenai. He was quite fond of Savage And Stevens at the time. Savage bought out Stevens.

I think the 99 is a classic beauty. Much more elegant lines than the Winchester Model 94 or Marlin 36 or 336 in my eyes. Of course the 99's were a very popular deer rifle for many years and very common in my part of the country. I still occasionally hunt with an old 99R in .300 Savage. One of my Dad's old hunting buddies had a lightweight, takedown Model 99G. Nice rifle for still hunting.

My FN Winchester M70 in 7mm 08 has a roomy magazine, and when I first got it I had once or twice a bit of feeding trouble. I was loading the bullets a little too far forward. So I load them with a little push to the rear and no problems. I ended up being really happy that I have the extra room, because I can use heavier/longer bullets if I choose and it shoots them well.

+Onkel Micke I get by fine without having to resort to it, but I do understand why some strictly firearm related channels feel the need. I think the real answer is someone other than Google needs to fill the need for advertising. There are certainly the advertising dollars from firearm friendly companies out there, if Google chooses to not do business with them it would seem some new agency could step in and make a tidy profit for themselves, and the people making the videos. Google counts on getting large numbers of people to watch a particular ad, to me it makes more sense to get the right people.

Easiest way to lower point of impact is to file the front sight down, a little at a time, if you

You lower the rear sight to lower the impact, or raise the the front sight to lower the impact. Get it straight before you give any more bad advice.

i know enough Native Canadians who hunt with a 303 Birtish...
they just like the gun, considering its a "war time" rifle....likeable, yes, but not necessary for a hunting gun
