I love how over the top the crashes are in Takedown onwards, but there's something incredibly brutal about how realistic the crash physics felt in the first 2 games

Burnout 3 actually still had that Realistic crash physics as long you did not click the R1 button (Aftertouch)

That's because the first 2 burnout games were solely inspired by the game "thrill drive" on Japan.
Thrill drive is an arcade racing game in which u have to race to finish before the timer runs out. But the game punishes you if you crash onto a traffic, this the origin of burnout finally come out.
