      @@sla31 all of your videos are stellar. It has enhanced my love of aviation. Matter of fact, last night I saw the tremendous wind shear on one of your flights to I think it was Tulsa and it was two or three hundred feet above ground and a downburst brought the plane down rapidly and he did a go around. that was excellent videography and tense as heck. Thank you so much for doing these; part of the highlight of my day.

    • @sla31
      @sla31  2 года назад +1

      I’m glad you enjoy them! That flight you’re referring too was actually at my home airport in Joplin, Missouri and with all the flying I do, was really the only time I ever felt “unsafe.” When that downdraft happened so close to the ground, and I know how dangerous that is, I may have had a bit of internal panic. It really is amazing I was able to continue filming so well! Downdrafts that close to the ground are no joke, and thankfully the ERJ-175 had enough power to climb out of it. Ultimately, the pilots made the right decision to go around and divert to another airport. But, honestly, they probably never should’ve attempted the landing to begin with. Not with that storm front so close to the airport. Anyways, again, thanks for watching my friend!

    Great video, when I first watched it I was a bit concerned that the flaps didn't look deployed for takeoff, then I rewatched the beginning and saw them being deployed at 10:18 but it's very subtle, interesting to see this. Recently subscribed and really love all your vids by the way.

    • @sla31
      @sla31  2 года назад +2

      Yeah, the first flap setting on the 717 is very difficult to see if you don't actually see them move slightly. Every 717 video I post gets comments about the pilots forgetting to put the flaps down. As you mentioned, you can see them extend slightly at 10:18. Anyways, I'm glad you're enjoying the content, and I'm glad to have you as a subscriber! Thanks for watching my friend!

    Hi B, well done that was a lovely presentation but crikes, that was a late approach turn to RWY 08 at Hilo! There's no ILS for that runway, so only last minute dead reckoning by the pilot will do :-() Kudos all round I would say! Hope that you're keeping well, regards from the UK :-)

      McDonnell Douglas acquired Convair's airframe operations in 1994. Not only that, both the Convair 640 and Boeing 717 have one thing in common - Rolls-Royce power (Dart turboprops for the 640, BR715 turbofans for the 717).

      I always travel with water. It’s important to stay hydrated, especially when you are flying around in pressurized metal tubes all day. I don’t usually bring any food. It is difficult to eat much of anything when you are filming with one hand the entire time.

    Beautiful video. Thank you for posting. I never tire of seeing Honolulu from above on outbound flights. However, the next time you do this flight, please treat yourself and sit on the port side of the aircraft. The descent toward Hilo along the verdant Kohala and Hamakua coastlines is beautiful, and the views of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are stunning. You'll come to appreciate just how massive those two mountains really are.

    • @sla31

      Yes, that is always a difficult decision for me. Either sit on the left side and you get to see Oahu and Honolulu, or sit on the right side and you get to see the Big Island. @@sla31 I've seen some on FR24 where they did intersection takeoffs from 8L but it's probably early morning when they don't have as many arrivals and I even did see a Hawaiian 717 do an intersection takeoff from Hilo when I was on the Big Island back in April at night

      So, the first setting of flaps on the 717 is very difficult to see when they're extended. They are extended in this video, but it's hard to tell if you didn't see them move. At 10:17 you can see them extend slightly. Thanks for watching!

    • @sla31
      @sla31  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, unfortunately it’s 50/50 if you’re going to get a clear window on Hawaiian. And it’s not dirt or grime. Half of their 717 windows, the plastic is just really scratched up. The window here was actually clean, but it had thousands of tiny scratches running across it. And half of their 717‘s are like this. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      It's all the same family, just different engines on the 90 and 717

    • @sla31

      In size, it is closer to the DC-9. But, in capabilities and design, it’s closer to the MD-90. The DC-9 was re-engineered to be the MD-80, which was re-engineer to be the MD-90, which eventually was re-engineer to be the MD-95.

    • @sla31
      @sla31  2 года назад +2

      I mean, it is technically a McDonnell Douglas aircraft. It was originally the MD-95, developed by McDonnell Douglas as, basically, an advanced, updated, shortened version of the MD-90. Which was, of course, an updated version of the MD-80. So, I wouldn’t call it a rip off. It’s kind of hard to rip off your own product. It was simply a newer version. Of course, Boeing acquired McDonnell Douglas in the 90s. And renamed the aircraft the 717.
