It’s great to see so many new businesses open on Gate 2 Street since the Covid restrictions were lifted. And the good dollar-yen exchange rate helps too.
Same here. I visited Oki in 2018 (vids are on my channel) and BC street and Kinville where dead ghost towns. During my tour (90-91), even on a Monday night, at least many of the restaurants were open, but that was not the case during my weekend trip a few years back, so it is indeed great to see the nightlife looking like what is was back in the day.
January 1st 1953 we had just got news that Hank Williams had died a real tragedy then. Korean war would last another 7 months. I was 18 then an was walking down the street in Koza, dirt road beer halls on one side crowded with g.i.s listening to Hank singing Kia Liga.I remember it like it was yesterday although it was more than 70 years.
Yes lots of US military. This area is right outside of Gate 2 Kadena US Air Force Base, hence the name Gate 2 Street. This video also walked over to BC Street which looked way dead than back in 1995 when I was there as a US Marine. If I remember correctly a lot of the establishments in this area accepted US dollars 😅 8:00 is Gate 2 Kadena Air Force Base. More US military members going to Gate 2 Street. In 1995 we would have a designated driver and park our cars in the parking lot on the air base at Gate 2 and walk off the base onto Gate 2 Street 😅
As much as I enjoyed seeing GATE 2, I wish there were more to view. The side streets where there wasn't anything going on was boring. YET, I believe the stroll did show some of BC street. Since there was no audio describing what was being shown, I am only guess it was BC street as it somewhat looks like it did back in the '80 when I was stationed in OKI.
I believe this is gate 2 Kadena! Just as you enter gate 2, to the right, back in "69" , there was an elementary school located there. I believe it was "70" or "71" that there was a protest that had started at gate 2, and there was no highway bridge there then, that had blown out of proportion, and a mamasan, during the protest, had been struck by a car and was killed. This started a huge reaction! They stormed the base and burnt part of the elementary school, burnt, I believe it was 70 cars that were parked off base. The news blew it so out of proportion back in the states! They reported there were 170 cars burnt and all kinds of other damage. But protests at the time would occur pretty much on a monthly bases. That was during the Vietnam war and they were always protesting the warfare equipment being brought through the island. Understandable, but predictable. Koza was so much different back then. The shops and bars were all more open. I went to High school at Kubasaki while there.
Yup, which was the reason the U.S. military was on Condition "GREEN" aka "Cinderella Liberty", when all GIs had to be OFF THE STREETS by MIDNIGHT, when I got there Aug '71
Yea. I was there ‘86-‘87. this main road coming out of gate 2 from Kadena AB wasn’t as lively but did have lots of shops. Used to buy chicken on a stick. We would hang a left and go to BC street. Many might have fond memories of that stinky great place and the exotic shows 🍌. Also, I see China Pete’s is gone; replaced by Pillar Church. Great times.
I was stationed there from 1975-1978. The two main streets were called Gate 2 Street (Kadena Air Force Base) and BC Street. I seldom saw any white girls downtown.
Thank you so much for sharing.
It's great to see PEOPLE on the streets again. My last 4 trips over (2014-2019) Koza was like a ghost town, day or night.
Nice video, thanks 😊

Are those gaijin mostly in the military stationed there or could some of them be tourists?
Military or family members mostly, though Okinawa does get some foreign tourists too.

Okinawa
Looks more like downtown Brooklyn.
Just a bit more safe lol

Remember Koza riot in December 20, 1970.

I can't understand you.
Damn doesn’t even feel like Japan at gate 2 Okinawa
Was this even there in like 1988?

And I thought it was some kind of American city
Okinawa is not a small island 🏝 😆
Seems so odd ... cares facing the 'wrong' way .. and NO BARKERS .... W T H ????
Swishing pants and marching boots?

I am American and I agree.
🤣😂
Loooool
Okinawa is the least desirable place to spend time in Japan.
