Ren will be 33 on March 29th, he'll be releasing a new song on that day. The pig character in the beginning is a recurring theme in his videos, it represents the doctors and therapists that have essentially been butchering him for years through their misdiagnosis. I agree 100%, if not for what he has gone through, would he have ever made this amazing piece of art that is "Hi Ren"? Maybe not, though he has made some amazing music even before "Hi Ren". His suffering has shaped his art and the world has now discovered him through it, and we get to experience the artistry and genius of his talents. He writes his own lyrics, plays multiple instruments (guitar, bass, piano, drums, keyboards) mixes and makes his own beats, sings, raps, shoots his own videos, beat boxes...he's EXTREMELY talented. His well deserved recognition is long overdue.

Precisely, well said. Another genius of music used a repeating theme like the pig and sea shells. He called it 'conceptual continuity' and his name is Frank Zappa. Ren has the same genius and will be as prominent and unique.

I concur.....And the greatest gift he gives us through this video is the reminder our our own humanity and vulnerability. I'm a 66 year old woman who went down the Ren rabbit hole a week ago. I've fallen in love with rap because of Ren. He's taken me to the chambers of my own heart and echoed in placed I never knew existed and I want to remain there..... I wish you well................

This is the kind of artistry that gives "broken" people hope. Ren, through this performance piece, has become to a lot of people exactly what he stated in the song, "...the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope". So powerful, so impactful. The song structure itself is incredible. It starts off as a battle between his positive (Angel) and negative (Demon) aspects, the negative then makes an overpowering last ditch effort to reign supreme, but ultimately fails as the final act, being the "God" aspect, emerges Triumphant, though still acknowledging and accepting that it will ALWAYS be a battle because we are all "a coin with 2 different sides". It's a beautifully cathartic and raw musical masterpiece. Ren is truly special. Welcome to the Ren rabbit-hole, it's a trip worth taking. This was the 4th take he did and yes, it was done live. Wait until you hear some of his other stuff, especially his storytelling ("The Tale of Jenny & Screech"). You haven't even touched the breadth of this young man's talent yet. #PerformanceArtPinnacle

Man, Ren spent years locked in his bed in pain misdiagnosed with Bi-polar and Chronic Fatigue syndrome before he was finally correctly diagnosed with Lymes Disease. It ravaged his body and brain. He’s has stem cell treatment which helped and now he’s in Canada having specialist treatment. Also when he was young a friend committed suicide and it had a huge effect on him. So when you mention foreshadowing you hit the nail. He’s struggled with suicidal thoughts thinking he couldn’t go on in pain and living in his bed while life went on. The fact that he’s been able to get through this has given him an insight and a maturity beyond his years. I believe it also made him realize that he wanted to do his own thing and not be controlled by a record company.

"Chalk Outlines" touches me deeply no matter how many times I watch this video or hear this song. Ren has been able to express through his songs what I have been unsuccessfully trying to communicate to others regarding my mental, emotional, and physical struggles.
I would recommend you also check out Ren's other collaboration with Chinchilla, the "How to Be Me" live version, as well as their busking sessions in Brighton, performing “Sexual Healing” (Marvin Gaye cover) and “One Dance / Drunk in love” (Drake/Beyoncé cover). As for "Chalk Outlines," it is one of my favorite songs right now; it is beautiful yet sad.
The studio version is also incredible. However, in my personal opinion, it does not come close to the live version. This performance is so much more raw, emotional, and visceral, and Chinchilla's performance here elevates the song to a whole new plain. I wish the live version would be available on Spotify.
Someone (Obj Owl @JoesTheBestInTheWorl) shared his interpretation, I think fittingly so, “The sound of the folding chair opening up fills the empty space with echoes emanating from the walls and then diminishes. Ren uses this to compose the song, with Chalk Outlines representing the empty space that he feels within. Chinchilla, who also emerges from the walls and echos Ren throughout and suitably for an echo, has the last word, leaving a dark empty space. It's dark on the gallows.”
Given Ren's medical history, I assume this song addresses mental illness diagnoses, and prescription psychotropics, which leave you emotionally dead (hence, the chalk outlines around your dead self). Even on a relatively good day when you might not want to take your pills, you take them "just in case," and you never truly enjoy "being ok because all things change," i.e., your well-being is usually short-lived and followed by another bout with depression. In her opening line, Chinchilla even mentions the antidepressant (SSRI) "Sertraline" and references serotonin.
I can attest to the reality of this; for over 15 years, I was prescribed a cocktail of max doses of psychotropics, including Sertraline, until I decided to carefully wean myself off all medications in 2014. The side effects of the drugs were too many and too severe, left me an emotional zombie, and the benefits were negligible. I rather feel pain than nothing at all.

This song breaks barriers. I’ve had bipolar 1 w mania and psychosis for 28 years. To my knowledge, no one has quite come out like this when it comes to mania and psychosis. When I was diagnosed, mental illness was a cuss word. So this is very moving.

I can count on one hand how many bands/artist I can say that about these days. Not bad for an independent artist that bucks the trend of labels telling you what is going to sell the most music and make the most money. Finally, an nobody artist comes out of the blue and great tribulations in his life, with self principles who simply has something profound to say and wants to share with the world based on real experience. Fame and fortune be dammed. He is about to receive both of those things into his life doing it his way. Glorious.

He was with Sony but they dropped him when he got sick. He's a solo artist and with his band are super popular in Brighton, England and were doing live concerts ! There last concert was 4 or 6 ,months ago because Ren had to leave for Canada to get the treatments

I can't listen to Chalk Outlines without crying. My daughter had a chemical imbalance at 16 that caused her to suicidal and I spent 2 years hovering around her to make sure she lived threw it. She grew out of the worst and learned to manage the remains of it. Don't ever give in. There is light at the end of every struggle ❤

The connection between Ren and Chinchilla is immense. I really urge you to check out and react to another one of their duets How To Be Me Live - again written by Ren. Others have already mentioned the story behind the song but it is even more heart wrenching and the connection between the two of them is perhaps even stronger.
There are also some videos of Ren and Chinchilla busking together which are well worth checking out - they are both supremely talented.

I have watched over 50 reactions to Hi Ren and can say that without fail not one person has failed to say that it doesn’t feel like a 9 min song. And I personally forget that still when I watch it because it never feels like it’s that long. He grips your attention so well you don’t think about time.

As always, great reaction. I really enjoy the format of your reaction videos, introducing your friends and fellow artists to Ren. I have posted the following comment on at least one of your other reactions. In case you, or your audience missed it, here it is again. I will spare everyone the lengthy Ren catalog post I usually share.
Here is some additional information on Ren's story that I gathered from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Erin Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990; he eventually moved to Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, he began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony.
Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure.
Ren is currently in Calgary, Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023). Ren’s Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals, as well as his bones/joints.
Ren’s recent wisdom tooth removal went well, and the infection in his jaw following the cavitation surgery has finally cleared up; Ren is able to eat solid food again.
Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel, listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to this generation, and his work is needed in these troubling times. Someone has finally created a Wikipedia page for Ren, so there is additional information available. Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity

DEFINITELY do the "Tale of Jenny and Screech". For rap you need to do "Power" and "What you want", (Of course "Hunger" and "Losin' it" if you haven't already), but for singing, check out some of his Big Push stuff like "Precious" and one of my personal favorites, "It's Alright" (live). Live street performances with Big Push are great as well, especially "I shot the sheriff". He also does another live one with Chinchilla called "How to be me" (a song written for a friend (Joe) who committed suicide). He also did some collabs with singer Eden Nash, one I really like is called "Humble". ALL of them are worth your time.

I know he lost his best friend to suicide at 19 and that can definitely make you think about what you want to leave behind. Then to have Lyme disease it makes sense for him to think about things like that. The song How to be Me with Chinchilla is about his friend and is absolutely chilling!

I've been loving "Heretic" and it has some really great lines in it! I think he should hear "The Hunger" as it shows off the layers of style, flow, and lyrical ability. If you want to do one with Sam Tompkins, do "blind eyed" for one you haven't seen yet either. I really like the version of it live on the street corner. There are several of them doing it live though.

The 'Foreshadowing' you spoke about is interesting. Before he was diagnosed with Lyme disease, He had convinced himself that he wouldn't make it to his Thirties. He is 33 on March 29th, and his in such a better place than he was just a few short years ago. That makes this hit home even more when he is talking about his music living on after he is gone. For the next reaction with Don, i would recommend the 'I shot the sheriff - road to zion - hip hop' medley, and then 'What you want' for the rap song - the rap song will reinforce your idea of him being influenced by the 90's!

@@snakelite61 You're probably on to something with the Eminem battle, but Money Game # 2 - the whole premise is about selling sea-shells. that's why the "dark-side" says "man we've heard it all before" when he's trying to convince the "light-side" that his music isn't original. More Ren! You should do Ren and Sam Tompkins live version of Blind Eyed (an original song by them - has singing and rap). The best performance is the one on the Music Crowns channel (ruclips.net/video/6z7ug3B_Sts/видео.html). Definitely show Don the tale of Jenny and screech, and you should do The Big Push Wade in the Water/ Nina Simone/ Trouble so Hard live busking mashup performance.
