NO. A Dutch Shepherd is not a good choice for a first time dog owner unless you have experience with raising and mentoring high energy ADHD children. These dogs are very smart, strong willed, need lots of attention, exercise and proper reward-based discipline. Without a job to do, they will find something to keep themselves busy, which will probably not make you happy. They are naturally protective and jealous, so they will need to be taught how to heel. They can be incredibly sweet, loving and affectionate, but also can be made dangerous.

Astra, for example, is very fond of chasing pigeons. As soon as she sees them on the street, she will immediately look at us questioningly. And if we give the go-ahead, she throws herself at them. If not, she immediately forgets about this desire. These are amazing dogs.

Mine Dutch male in Northern California sheds constantly. They are very vocal with a wide range of sounds.
