GT speaks the truth! I’ve improved so much since following his building blocks approach. It’s literally gold folks. Stop noodling the blues and focus on some of his ideas on caged and arpeggios, major scale etc. If you’re like me, you already know the pentatonic (maj and min) so it’s an easier point to jump from. Thanks Brett Papa for introducing me to his stuff a couple years ago now. 🙏
GT is one of my favorite players on the planet... his unique teaching and communication skills are a bonus. Another Alabama boy has done well... Roll Tide! Looking forward to taking his lessons someday. Thanks for the great interview, Brett!
Man. Mr Trapp's knowledge, insight and wisdom are unreal. Such a great teacher. I'm not allowed to pick up my guitar unless I'm applying something from his framework. it's the G law!
Two of my favorite artists sharing so much knowledge! I have followed you both for some time now, and I am a much better guitarist. I still have much to learn but I'll say THANK YOU FELLAS!!!!
So happy I understand all this stuff now, from watching all the great teachers on utube.thanks for What you do.it truly does open up the whole guitar neck.never thought I'd be able to do this stuff.
Forget the analogy of "drinking out of a fire hose", having GT on your show is like ripping the top off the hydrant! I start to drown pretty quickly but man every drop I can consume is liquid gold. Great show!
This is thee best instructional video I’ve seen for us players who are intermediate. Standing at the threshold of stardom or at least being able to get up and play with others who are professionals.
fer me Blues is the start of it ALL... it's the gateway to EVERYTHING else, including jazz fer me... once again SO good and practical stuff!!! THANK YOU both!! ;0) M
Good job Brett! I love GT’s playing and ideas. You really helped by asking him to be more specific with his explanations. Some times I get lost because he isn’t say exactly what shape he is using because he does it so fast. Great mix of helping each other out…
Great lesson. I learned a bunch. Please tell Guthrie I have a friend in Hawaii downwind from the volcano. Lots of sulfur in the air and he can't ride his bike outside. He got an electronic wheel for the rear of his bike and puts his 15" laptop on the handlebars. For $15/mo he can ride virtually through any city he wants and the rear wheel accurately adjusts the pitch for hills and resistance. he can even ride virtually at the same time with and talk to friends. Take a bike ride through central park NYC and 100s of others. He swears by it
Oh wow I been playing since I was 13 and knew about inversion and chord things on piano but never knew how to do it on guitar. So thanks cause now I'm 30 and finally the idea and understanding of not to press to hard on the strings down to hard! Finally, I guess better late then never! I mean come on. Thanks ya'll for explaining it!
I feel like the intervals are super important to learn to follow this style of lead play, especially when you are playing over multiple chord changes that are more complex. Also, you need to know what the major third is to make it a flat or minor third, in every key. So you do need to know the notes, I know Guthrie knows all of the notes on the guitar, maybe not right on the spot, but it helps with the intervals and chord construction that turns into lead ideas. I can't do the bouncy style he plays, its very smooth and jazzy while somehow being country and funky at the same time.
as to playin with other than yerself... i got myself a set of PerSonus 3.5 monitors fer the Mac & a Fender Mustang Micro headphone amp and plug in to the AUX IN and away we go, we can now jam or play along with ALL these awesome vids AND lessons... wow, we are SO fortunate to live in the time that we do.... blessins to all. ;0) M
Someone in the comments asked about Minor CAGED and why it doesn't get any love: If you're already comfortable using the CAGED system to connect shapes up and down the fretboard, you can use it for minor, too. You can because it's the same notes as the minor, and playing minor is as easy as targeting minor chord tones. For example, take the CAGED E-chord shape, but look at the six, one, and three instead of the one, three, and five (or basically just trade the 5th note for the 6th note). Ta da, the listener heard you play a c-minor instead of an E-major arpeggio. Practice it a few times until your ear takes over, and you're all set!
First time I heard Robben Ford, I had took a chance by purchasing a cassette of his from a music store. It was the Talk to your Daughter album. I was driving north on Route 4 between Hamilton and Fairfield. Ohio. I had pop the tape in and started listening to it. And I also bought the Tiger Walk album when it came out. It’s amazing hearing these two guys tell their stories when they first heard Robben Ford, because it’s identical to mine! I remember where I was when I first heard him.
I'm late to this party but lately I've been jamming to the old live Dominoes footage. Really helped me learn the chord changes and what Clapton does over them.
sean costello was the first one to open my ears to this concept. he was a force of nature. check out 'have you no shame'. everything guthrie talked about.
Still coming back to this vid a year later.lol.what I realized is the progression played throughout,is actually in the key ofA.starting on the E.that makes it a mixo progression.E-Bm-A.thats why the natural b min scale don’t work over the Bm,it’s b Dorian in the key of A gsharp
Im taking a road trip to Nashville to hopefully run into you guys! Bringing my son with me...we live in Northwest Indiana at the tip of Lake Michigan, 30 min from Chicago... So, this might be a silly question, but where would you recommend going for awesome live guitar playing, in July...Im hoping you guys will be around!!
Brett , I have to ask, is there any chance that Guthrie will do any courses with you? I am sure they would fly off the shelf. Thank you for all of your lessons and introducing me to so many amazing players. The learning is never ending
Great session guys! Wicked playing. The progression is a V - Iimi7 - I - V in the key of A...so it's an E Mixolydian progression...The B Minor isn't a V minor it's a II Minor...E Is the tonal center, not the key center.
I love you Brett. I'm not trying to question you because you are a wonderful guitar teacher. But, I could not hear the lead because the rhythm playing was to loud.
Yeah it was a setting on the mixer that wasn't actually representing the overall volume we thought we were listening to. Live and learn! Better luck for us next time. I'll get him back over soon.
Don't discount classic 50s rock n' roll. It is the perfect halfway point between classic blues and 70s rock. You'll learn the swing feel needed to conquer blues as well as the licks to more easily figure out Led Zeppelin, The Who, AC/DC, etc.
Haha I know. The mixer was in monitor mode so when Guthrie and I sound checked it sounded fine to us and I made sure he was louder. Lesson learned. He will be back. You still got over an hour and 20 min of just Guthrie so there is that lol!

I’ve had a private lesson with GT and a month later I was almost a guitar player. Great guy. Wouldn’t mind doing a lesson with you too, Brett
Haha! Yeah hit me up. I don't do them very often do to time constraints but we can figure something out.
Sweet! I’ll bring a 5 points pizza

An hour and a half well spent. Thank you... now do another one lol
Haha! More coming soon!
It doesn't matter if Guthrie or Brett plays on a Strat or Tele. It's Guthrie. And it sounds awesome.
I had to say that just from the intro I’m having a joygasm from this since I listen to the intros from their past vids like albums
Haha thanks for tuning in!
Same mate i just replay the intros over and over and nut all over the place lmao

That jam session at the first part of the video reminded me of the song “Stand” by Poison
Great tune. Ritchie lights that track up!
sean costello was the first one to open my ears to this concept. he was a force of nature. check out 'have you no shame'. everything guthrie talked about.
Will do.
Pretty bummed i missed this live. But here i am now watching.

"Hopefully it's not a Steely Dan song!" 😂 Brought back some memories. I miss going to blues jams dammit!
Seeing GT with a strat is just wrong. Seriously though, can't wait to watch this. Thanks guys!

Awesome Talk about knowing where every note is! The possibilities are endless! Caged system on steroids!
Yep for sure!
Huge teaching!

Guthrie T. one of the GOAT! 🙌
Yep!
The whole progression is the A Major scale. Since the basis of the tune is in E. E's the V of A Major so the mode is E Mixolydian. Groovy progression.
Thanks for watching!

Guthrie is just such an amazing guitarist. But dammit its fast teaching, push a bottom and it all comes out, at the same time :-)
