Remember the pilots of WW2. Flying over England, Germany, Russia, Japan, Pacfic Ocean and all over. Just dropping bombs and targeting and dog fighting! Imagine the feeling of destroying your objective. Imagine the feeling of striking another plane in skies. Imagine suiting up at 3 am and going for a mission and not knowing if you are going to come back or alive.
The sky over the lighthouse island was a tumult of black clouds and howling winds. Thomas Howard stood at the edge of the rocky shore, his eyes scanning the churning sea. The lighthouse behind him cast long, wavering shadows as its beam cut through the storm. The oppressive atmosphere pressed down on him, making every breath a struggle. From the depths of the ocean, a massive shape began to rise, breaking through the frothy waves. The monstrous form of the Kraken, all tentacles and fanged maw, emerged with a deafening roar. The creature's eyes, glowing with a malevolent light, locked onto Howard, who felt a cold dread settle in his bones. As the Kraken surged toward the shore, a voice echoed through the storm-gruff, familiar. Thomas Wake's voice. "Ye thought ye could escape, lad? Ye thought ye could leave without facing the truth?" Howard spun around, only to see Wake standing on the rocks, a twisted grin on his weathered face. His eyes gleamed with a strange, unnatural light. Wake's form began to shift, his body elongating, transforming into the hideous shape of the Kraken itself. Tentacles sprouted from his sides, and his flesh became mottled and slick, matching the beast's grotesque form. "Ye are me, and I am ye," Wake's voice gurgled from the Kraken's maw. "We are bound, tethered by the same cursed fate." With a roar, the Kraken lunged at Howard, who barely managed to dive out of the way. He grabbed a harpoon from the shore, the cold steel reassuring in his grip. Howard faced the Kraken, his heart pounding with a mixture of fear and defiance. The battle that ensued was brutal and primal. Howard slashed at the Kraken's tentacles, the harpoon cutting through the slick flesh. Each strike was met with a bellow of rage from the beast, its immense strength threatening to overwhelm him. The storm raged on, lightning flashing and thunder booming, as if the very heavens were spectators to their struggle. Tentacles wrapped around Howard's body, lifting him into the air and slamming him against the rocks. Pain shot through his body, but he fought on, driving the harpoon into the Kraken's eye. The creature screamed, its grip loosening just enough for Howard to break free. He fell to the ground, gasping for breath, his vision swimming. The Kraken reared back, its form shifting once more. Howard watched in horror as the creature transformed into a mirror image of himself. He saw his own face twisted in agony, his own eyes filled with the same monstrous light. "No," Howard whispered, the realization dawning on him. "This can't be." The doppelgänger stepped forward, its voice an eerie echo of his own. "We are one, Thomas. There is no escaping this. The madness, the isolation-it has consumed us." Howard dropped the harpoon, his strength leaving him. The truth was undeniable. He, Thomas Wake, and the Kraken were all fragments of the same tormented soul, bound to the lighthouse by a curse of their own making. The storm began to subside, the winds dying down as the revelation settled over the island. Howard fell to his knees, the weight of his existence crushing him. The doppelgänger approached, merging with him, the boundaries between them dissolving. In the end, there was only one Thomas-whole, yet irrevocably broken. He stood alone on the shore, staring out at the calm sea, the lighthouse's beam sweeping over the water. The battle was over, but the torment remained, a perpetual reminder of the darkness within. And so, Thomas Howard remained on the island, the lighthouse keeper and the lighthouse's prisoner, forever haunted by the monsters that were himself.

To be a good person, you must learn first how to be a monster, and next how to control it.
