- Pat recently began working with a young man who lives close to us to teach him how to start colts. In today's video, we check in on one of the colts, a roan mare, to watch Pat work her on the fence. The purpose of this exercise is to ensure that he can influence all four feet, along with having the horse yield the hindquarters and the forehand. This mare was range raised so she is very different than what many people are used to seeing. We'll check back in with her on a regular basis to keep track of her progress. So stay tuned! She really is, especially since the 3 year old year is when they can look pretty awkward. She's going to be a beautiful using type at 4
I think people who see this and come to a negative opinion of the work being done are responding strongly to the fear they see in the horse. However, that fear is what makes horses so dangerous. Its very important in my opinion to teach horses these skills so people can have safe partnerships with them. So we can be as safe as possible.

You do a good job Pat seems to me flags sticks and whips just add more work not less. Like you im old ànd try to do as little as i can and get the most from it. My opinion flags should be blowing in the wind sticks should be in the fire and whips not seen. Thanks for Video

The airs getting thin out there must be wild fires...lol mine to.
Just want to comment on filly's weight because I bet you're going to hear about it.
Filly looks good and it's much healthier for a horse to be at the weight where you can see rib shadow than having so much fat that you can't see any suggestion of ribs.
Could she use 50 pounds? Sure, but it's HOT this time of year so horses naturally lose a little because it's easier to not lug extra fat around. Horses being worked lose some fat and gain muscle too. Same goes for people lol.

When you flapped the flag and the horse moved the left hind, you kept waving the flag so she didn’t know that was what you wanted. The only choice was to flee.
He wanted her to yield her hindquarters and step closer to the fence as she has been taught to do and has proven that she understands in previous sessions. He was past the "reward the slightest try" part. This was an example of the roller coaster of training young horses. They can sometimes go backwards and say "I don't want to do this today." The horsemen has to know when to ask for more and when to insist on more.
@@PatnDebPuckett thanks for your response. I have never seen your videos before so knew nothing about the trainer. I guess my problem was that she was hard tied and clearly anxious and “up” so when she thought she needed to flee to “survive the day” she wrenched her neck and may well have been injured. I’m sure his intentions were good but I’m also sure he wouldn’t want to harm her. I don’t know what happened because I had to stop watching. I was afraid to see what happened next. Just so you know, I wasn’t trying to criticize but rather help in case he didn’t realize about stopping the flag when they get it right. Anyway, wishing you all the best, truly, and thanks again for explaining.
I have loved all of Pat's videos up to now BUT I do not see any reason to tie the mare hard and fast before that totally predictable freeze and blind bolt she did that first time. Fetching up that hard at that angle with a rope halter tied hard, it's just too easy to cause serious long lasting damage. Folks, even though our beloved teacher did it, DO NOT set it up that way. The consequences can be just too horrible.
Well considering your account has no content… and a horse has a mind of its own.. and no matter how good you think you are… things like that happen even when we offer the best deal from the start.
I respect your opinion but I want you to focus on the fact that Pat told everyone at the start of the video that this mare has been roped ALOT. She has also been worked on the ground and taught where the end of the rope is. I would also argue that her response was not, in fact, predictable as she did the exercise perfectly during a previous session. What you also need to remember is that I could have edited this part out but we pride ourselves on showing the good and the ugly and the unexpected so that people might learn how things really work when training horses. Most horsemen on RUclips never show you what happens "behind the scenes" so to speak. So, I made the decision to show this session in its entirety, blemishes and all. It can be pretty discouraging to be judged by people who probably have a lot less experience but a lot more opinions than we do. But there you are. Take it for what it's worth and try to become better horsemen.
Undoubtedly an anthropomorphic wannabe. Used to teaching horses to pull back by tying to baling twine. The mare is fine and better for the experience.

How do you approach doing this exercise with a horse that is much less sensitive? I imagine it's just a matter of increasing pressure and making contact with the rope until they get the idea? Or is it more about being patient until they do what you ask and mentally figure it out, then you give them that release?
