Thank you Magnus! When I was a child, our school bus passed Mr. Monroe’s 200 acre farm on Long Hollow Pike in Goodlettsville Tennessee. I’m an amatuer Bluegrass Fiddler & also pick mandolin.
Thanks so much Magnus. What a great tune and you have broken it up nicely so that it is really easy to learn by ear. Now I'm working hard on getting it clean and up to speed!
This was really helpful, I'm new to mandolin but I played the violin for 8 years so I find myself in-between levels. This was just difficult enough for me to feel challenged but not so hard that I wanted to give up. Might save the ornaments for next week though haha.
Nice one Magnus, thanks! I love the arrangement and the open sounding chords/double stops! The lesson was easy enough to follow along, though I had some trouble getting the hang of the timing of the "second section" of the A part. Looking forward to another lesson!
Thanks Simon! I´m glad you say you can follow the lesson. I try to do it so that the watcher can learn while watching and play a long with me. Like I would do if we were in the same room. For the "second section" of the A-part, maybe listen to my play-through of the song a couple of times, that will probably give you the idea of the timing. Oh yes, there´s more lesson coming up. :-)
I have found it best to dedicate about 30-45 minutes to your lessons, and keep blank TAB paper in front of me as you go along. I've been able to keep up better with that and retain the tune a lot better! I have this fear of memorizing it and losing it shortly after.
Hi Magnus--had a lot of fun learning this song from you and I've signed up to your mailing list! As far as other Bill Monroe tunes, Jerusalem Ridge comes to mind. Very much looking forward to your future videos.
+Henry Swift Thanks Henry! I'm really glad to hear that. Oh yes, I put Jerusalem Ridge to the list. I've learned a Tim O'Brien version of that song that I'm happy to share. We keep in touch!
Yes, I love that video! I play a version of Jerusalem Ridge that combines that with some things I heard Tim O´Brien doing in this video. Have you seen this? ruclips.net/video/hDMaSMARSJA/видео.html Henry, I´m just curious, Where in the world do you live?
I shall definitely give this a go. You make it sound great. I don't suppose you have tabs or a score to go with it? Thanks for sharing all your hard work.
Magnus Zetterlund Yes, it did me good to follow 'by ear' instead of 'by eye' - and it gave me a sense of achievement. A million thanks for your really helpful, well-paced demo.

Thanks! Yes, that´s the way to do it. Learn it slowly and then bring it up to speed. Best of luck!
Really like your version of this tune - I'm now learning it on guitar. Thank you for posting!
Cool Galen!
Thanks Magnus. Really great info and well done.

Great! Your violin background will be of much help when it comes to playing Mandolin. Keep up!
Beautiful Magnus. I'll work on this over time. Kiitoksia paljon, Tak sa myket

That’s great Ivan! Keep up the good work. If you want it there’s notations/tabs in Mandolin Secrets Academy.
This was truly excellent! Do you have any more tunes that sound good on mandolin when played solo?
Thanks Pieter-Jan! Oh yes, there´s plenty. To mention one, check out Flatbush Waltz!
Great lesson. Thanks
Thanks Gary!
One of my favorite tunes. I like the deliberate pace. I think i learned it from Kevin Burke.

I shall definitely give this a go. You make it sound great. I don't suppose you have tabs or a score to go with it? Thanks for sharing all your hard work.
Thanks Betsy! Sorry, I don´t have score or tabs for it. I really hope you can learn it anyway. Cheers!
Magnus Zetterlund, no problems. I am sure I can manage - I shall just have to take it slowly. Thank you.
That´s the Spirit!

+Betsy2303 I’m glad to hear that Betsy! I’m preparing a similar tutorial of Jerusalem Ridge. Hope that can suit you!
For rhythm, the A and B endings scream out for C, E, Am rather than just G and back to Am.
Listen to James Bryan’s version...
Sure Andy! Do you got a link to share?
Do you have tabs available for this arrangement?
Yes Ashton! I do have Tabs, and that is a bonus for my Academy members. Learn more about it here: www.mandolinsecrets.com/academy
I would add my vote to a Jerusalem ridge lesson too.
It’s on my list! I got a very nice Tim O’Brian version that I would like to share.
Snyggt!
Tack Perry!
