AJ: Scores a 100-win streak, never suffers a loss, and is never seen again. Iris: Scores a 99-win streak, gets owned, and goes on to become Champion Master.
AJ went on, won the pokemon league championship and is sat there waiting for Ash expecting a rematch, he's aged twenty years so far by the time ash makes it to him AJ will have passed away from old age then subsequently left a skeleton for Ash to find decades later.
Cassandra Spoelhof | I'm pretty sure it was Ash Lee, referring to Bruce Lee, and not Ash's female persona that one episode. It could be a double entendre, though.
@@Eric-py8yy It might be IDK. I just know that in Pokémon whenever Ash cross dressed he went by Ashley. It happened when he took on Erica and then again in Best Wishes in the episode “Beauties Battling for Pride and Prestigious”
Obviously AJ couldn't get past Erica's gym with a Sandshrew, Butterfree and Rattata. But think about it: here's an unofficial gym that went on for 98 battles and no one reported him!
I can assure you, he would. Type difference is important, but battle experience is the deciding factor, along with moves that aren't of their own type.
Kind of funny as we NEVER see AJ again as the series go on. But truthfully, we actually see a Sandslash much later on in the series, literally a thorn in an Onix's side. Maybe Sandshrew finally evolved and just told AJ to fuck off and decided to split the scene.
This episode solidified my childish love for the Sandshrew evolution line which led to my love of the Ground typing. My OC pokemon trainer uses Sandslash as her ace and works with Ground, Rock and Fighting type pokeemon as an instructor in an introductory course for beginner trainers.
Admittedly, it would be nice to see how current Ash would battle against AJ now. Ash now has several Leagues experience under his belt, and actually won the Alola League, so it would be nice to see Ash going up against a strong Pokemon Trainer like AJ just to see how much both of them had grown since they met.
RIGHT! AJ was my favorite opponent of Ashes and I NEVER saw him again! I always suggest him in those trainer team videos and stuff, and I never get voted enough! :(
AJ’s voice actress, Maddie Blaustein, was also the second voice for Meowth. She also played Damien and Lt. Surge. This episode was also the first time Eric Stuart voiced James, right when he sends out Koffing. The first actor, Ted Lewis, left to do theatre (he came back as Giovanni).
What happened to AJ you ask? He met a girl, lost his virginity, and realized how lame it was to try and be the same as Ash. Or maybe he just opened his own gym and is raking in the dough from all the overconfident watermon trainers that had no idea his shrew resisted water due to him being a hacker. Lmao
There should be like an entire anime season where Ash just like, checks in with old pokemon and trainers man. Like, AJ started a dojo, he finds his butterfree with it's babies, goes back for pidgeot, visits that swamp where he left his dragon (why is that things name escaping me?) Like.... why is this not a thing?
I agree a lot of the show has a lot of cliffhangers that make us wonder what happens next. and why he never returned for pigioat and primeape as he promised.
AJ won 100 battles before challenging a single gym. Maybe it just took him so long to earn badges that the pokemon league came and went before he got 8 of them. Also, an unlicensed gym that openly advertises that it's not part of the league sounds like a good idea. A strong trainer can open one, take on all challengers, offer up prizes to winners, and make money from his victories. And as long as he advertises that it's not an official gym, he's not guilty of fraud. You'd think we'd see this more often. (Or maybe we have and I just forgot about it. Not sure.) Or maybe we don't see them because gyms like that are outlawed, and we never saw AJ again because he was thrown in jail after bragging about his undefeated streak at his illegal gym.
The real question is who has the worse voice actor: AJ (who dresses his Sandshrew in S&M gear, btw) or Damian from a few episodes later? That guy can't even say Charmander!
@@dakotastein9499 Commenting because most recent comment but I think AJ sands here is a Ditto. Team rocket and meow said that sandshrew looks fat which is out of shape and well is clearly trained well so wouldn’t be out of shape. Ash and Brock question if AJ is cheating because it seems too good to be true. Then we see sandshrew unaffected by water going in the pool and when the food is shown there is no sandshrew but is literally a ditto food. What you think?
one strange thing that happened this episode was James went from being voiced by Ted Lewis to Eric Stuart mid episode. Well, more late episode with, Your turn, Koffing
AJ was arrested not long after this episode and charged with Pokemon Cruelty and then later CP That was found all over his Pokedex, disguised as entries.
We finally got to this episode, AJ is one of my favorite secondary characters from Kanto, he's one part of my second-favorite Kanto pairing (we'll get to the other half later) Technically, this isn't filler, as the anime isn't based on any source material
AJ is such a blowhard, but I like the way he thinks, challenging the Gyms after he wins 100 battles with other trainers, and rigorously training his Pokemon to be ready for anything with his main being his Sandshrew. Excellent and efficient strategy.
This episode for me was just meh, granted yes, it had its entertaining moments and it was a good episode to knock Ash down a peg, as he was getting cocky. However, I hate that it doesn’t go anywhere, AJ and Ash make a promise to battle again and of course that’s a false promise, yet another thing that makes the OG series trash. Granted, future Pokémon series have also done it, but this one is the biggest offender and when future Pokémon series do it, it’s usually just to say good riddance to a character of the week, a one off character if you will, someone who usually isn’t a trainer and has no relevance to future episodes. But the OG series builds up and makes a huge deal out of characters and then makes promises that never come true and it’s disappointing. But anyway, they make a promise to battle again and later in Johto, characters from past seasons start reappearing and it actually had me excited, I mean hell, they show AJ in the season 2 theme song, like they will see him again, but nope, they never do. They never show AJ again and not even at the league. Nothing comes of it, it’s wasted potential, a big missed opportunity and an abandoned plot point, it’s just garbage plain and simple, only certain moments makes this sole episode slightly entertaining, this episode gets a D+!

I think what would have made the show better as if he ran back into somebody like AJ and he ran back into Gary and stuff people that he started seeing on the journey like seeing them months to a year later or something but that's just me because I'm an original Pokemon show watching the new shows is okay she just be weird when they show like OG pokémon around a bunch of new Pokemon I'm like the new Pokemon are so f****** ugly though you can't tell me they not ugly bro
His sandshrew evolved and sandslashed him to bits
AJ: Scores a 100-win streak, never suffers a loss, and is never seen again.
Iris: Scores a 99-win streak, gets owned, and goes on to become Champion Master.
MILTON: "Why do you think that is? Because you're so f*****g good?"
I can already tell the biggest complaint is the SANDSHREW that *SWIMS*
And unlike Rhydon, it doesn't even have the excuse of being able to learn Surf to justify it.
Aj gave up battling and opened his Pokemon kink dungeon
AJ probably got shut down by PETA... or his pokemon just rebelled and shred him...

Its not like that is the only Pokemon hes going to ever have. Even so he literally trained them intensely on their weaknesses.
Ironically, in the japanese version, the nose growing actually meant he was proud unlike what we assume.
I didn't know this! Very interesting!
This is one of my favourite episodes, but it has issues, glad you sorted it out. I wish we saw AJ in the indigo league.
Officer Jenny arrested AJ after he made love to his Sandshrew of indeterminate gender
Kanbei yeah I don’t know if he got that far but he was definitely arrested due to his relationship to that sandshrew.
Kanbei 😬😐

AJ was arrested for having a swimming Sandshrew
I wish AJ's Sandshrew evolved into Sandslash after defeating Team Rocket.
AJ annoyed Team Rocket too much so this happened:
Jessie SHOT him!
Sandshrew evolved and was strong enough to take the whip and train aj that’s why he wasn’t at the league
Growing up is realizing AJ may or may not have gaslighted his Sandshrew into thinking he was a good trainer to it.
AJ went on and put great matches against big match John, Omega, Okada....
With his pokemon food AJ was just fattening them up to eat them. Sandshrew was mortified and ran for his life.
That explains why it's just putting on the loving facade to hide the fact that it doesn't want a gaslighter for a trainer.
As a kid I was disappointed that AJ never returned so we could see his win streak get destroyed at some point.
This episode solidified my childish love for the Sandshrew evolution line which led to my love of the Ground typing. My OC pokemon trainer uses Sandslash as her ace and works with Ground, Rock and Fighting type pokeemon as an instructor in an introductory course for beginner trainers.
there was a moment sandshrew was swimming and somehow a little outfit helps sandshrew
I'd bet money that Ajs Sandshrew was defeated by that overpowered Bellsprout
Maybe his Sandshrew was a higher level... Pokemon that are kept from evolving learn more powerful moves faster...
So Meowth must be a higher level than sandshrew, because one hit ko move adds 1% to it's accuracy,or it's just,Anime Logic!
