It was about 5 minutes into the surprise party story when I realized that poor girl is still on the phone and hasn’t even asked her question because Miles is monologuing 😂
Nia the caller was such a real one. Whole-assed the “Howdy”, and waited 3-5 business days to hear the answer to a yes/no question (“have you ever had or thrown a surprise party”)

For a womens perspective on the body comments question- I used to work in service and I do think it takes a lot of courage to respond to these kinds of comments. One day I just felt the strength to respond “I know you mean well but I’m working. Please dont comment on my body.” That shut people right up when I was hosting and a cashier. For the boutique job it might be easiest to redirect and say “we’re here to celebrate you and your beauty”. I will say things are much harder when you’re waiting tables- our tipping system honestly just sucks and causes employees to take a lot of shit they shouldn’t have too. We will say it again for the kids in the back, NOT IN MY JOB DESCRIPTION 😅

Hilarious episode, amazing energy! On an entirely different note, I often get the "you're hot/beautiful for a disabled person" (I know, so backhanded), I just go with the oh so simple "what's wrong with being disabled?" It always leaves them speechless and thinking. That's when I make my escape.
Absolutely the right response for a backhanded compliment. I wonder if it’s different when people are wedding cake shopping and trying to make a positive statement but are putting themselves down in the process…
@@zerocraic3966 Hmm, I wonder that too. I think it'd depend on who's making the comment (male or female presenting) and if they're putting themselves down while comparing. If it's the latter, it might be similar? Except that I kinda need to call out the ableism they're using to make themselves feel better. Which has happened with family members and acquaintances. So tricky and convoluted...and lots of emotional labour. That onion, it has layers!
@@grooovydeadite miles had a good point of if they’re bad at socializing AND it’s not hurtful to you, that it’s exhausting to correct everyone, but ofc not in ableist or antagonistic commentary. especially when their comment in the callers case is coming from a place of self hate, I think it’s harder to follow the same path as say if it was like in your case where it’d do blatantly backhanded to highlight your otherisms.
For example I got a lot of “wow you’re so [positive adjective] for a [insert race/demonym/other characteristic I had no hand in choosing]”
In those situations I make sure to be very clear like you were.
But I also get comments on “how do you manage [certain thing], I can’t do it at all!” And I know it’s coming from a place of them comparing themselves negatively or a place of hurt, I usually don’t try to correct them for mis-valuing the thing their commenting on me about positively, I veer towards acknowledging the part they’re feeling bad about first
But that’s in interpersonal settings. When I worked client facing, the callers/miles idea of just a batch, business related reply (“do you want this to go?”) is better than worrying about healing that person.
@@zerocraic3966agreed! When needed or in professional settings, you keep it short and positive. Whatever's easiest. Otherwise, if you have the energy, you call out whatever issue or you give them that epic one-liner and make your escape!

ATTENTION CALLER WHO WORKS AT THE BAKERY!!!! So I am a small, skinny woman who works as a waitress & bartender. (I’m talkin’ 5’4” 97lbs) I get these comments not only daily but AGGRESSIVELY! Anywho.. I have Ulcerative Colitis. (Just diagnosed this year so I didn’t have this “trick” up my sleeve until recently bc I didn’t have a name for it.) but… way before my diagnosis, I gave up the fact that I had to make others feel better about their own trash comments. I am so ill, dude.. why am I comforting you? Anywho.. my FAVE response was one that can be used universally so I thought I’d share (So, to the 1,000th woman who commented on my skinny stature I said…) “oh, idk why I’m so thin.. my doctors and surgeons are still looking for a cause/cure” I can’t tell you what a change this made. People not only apologized but I feel like they left with a re-set attitude

I’m on my third listen of the day. I was wheezing so hard first time through we were at “get real” before I could even savor what happened. Never knew of Eric or his content before Miles and wow what a duo.
It’s rare for me to laugh out loud and this podcast does that for me but this duo especially 😂 I am making my way through past episodes and dread the day I’ve watched them all and have to wait for new episodes

Seriously what a cliffhanger
for the person with the bakery/bridal shop jobs: i had the same problem when i worked at a coffee/pastry joint! people always made comments about me being “so skinny, what with all those pastries back there” and i was actively dealing with an ED so it was super harmful. I had to learn to completely dismiss those comments and ignore them, and usually people would just drop it, but sometimes, they’d push it and keep asking. in those cases, i had to be okay with straight up asking them to not comment on my body as it made me very uncomfortable. its tough, and uncomfortable, but like Miles said its not your job to educate every person you meet in passing and you have to focus on protecting yourself!
This episode had me snort laughing all the way through. Love the energy of you and Eric together!

Wonderful episode as usual! One of my best birthdays was when my friends threw me a surprise party! They definitely made me feel so sad for a few hours when almost all of them except the one friend I was hanging out with (who was in charge of directing me toward the party basically lol) said they were too busy to do anything 😂 They were so stealthy, they got me good.

LASIK is the best! It was so much easier than I could have imagined. It took like five minutes, I felt no pain or discomfort, and my vision was almost 20/20 by that same evening. Blue light glasses are always a valid option if you miss the look!

I've really been soothed by hearing how many people call in and say they're the planner of their friends group or relationship. I low key felt like that was just a me problem? But I'm a planner and have fun looking up places to go for dates or dinner meet ups, or book where to stay and where to eat when I go out of town with anyone. And generally, I really enjoy that part of it. But also, most people in my circle would *not* prepare any plans or even ideas ahead of time so I feel like everyone would be helpless if I wasn't like "hey how about dinner at x, drinks at y, we can park at z and walk to all of it" and they don't know I spent half an hour looking up places and distances and parking 😅
