does old heating turn dark material lighter ? or... light material darker? or...improves clarity? or.... all the above?

Usually the intention is to intensify the colour saturation and improve the clarity. However colours can be lightened and darkened in some material. For example, even though old burn is just the application of heat and nothing else, the temperature you take the stones to, the duration of the burn and very importantly, whether the stones are heated in the presence or absence of oxygen (this is done by either sealing the stones in an air tight clay container, or having them in an open container.
