  • Hey Horse Lovers! Today while we were riding at Fort Custer in Augusta, MI something nerve wracking happened. We overall had a good day, but this could have been a horrible situation. This video is a good reminder that issues can occur on the trail, and you never know what can happen. Enjoy the ride! 🔔 IF YOU ENJOY MY CONTENT SUBSCRIBE.

Bagheera is a 26 year old Morgan/Standardbred X. She was an Amish driving horse before coming to the auction where I purchased her . She was only driving horse, and then I retrained her for under saddle pleasure riding.

Bagheera is a very good girl-- she thought " Where is everybody??" And came back looking for you! I am glad you did not yell at her- you don't yell at animals, ever-- that is why she came right back. She trusts you.

With all animals, no matter how well they are trained, always expect the unexpected. And always, always carry some sort of tack repair kit . Shea, it sounded like you had something with you, as I would expect, I'm talking to those who just jump on a horse and go. You need to be prepared for any emergency.

I actually am part of a search and rescue team here in Michigan. We have had several call outs for missing horses and riders . We even had one last week. Luckily all with a good outcome. It is easy to get lost on some of these trails. Glad everything worked out and everyone is safe. Have fun!

We own land next to large urban area. The town posts it for us. One day walking, listening to nature I heard a ring tone, very close, then dead silence, so terrified I couldn't see. Nothing came of it but obviously someone was hiding a few feet away.

I was taught, by people with trail riding experience, so many valuable preventatives that I never would have thought of myself. Of course these were veterans of the longer rides. You were on a short ride and you handled it very well. Plus you were just so blessed in every way in how it turned out. I get the feeling that you are very lucky lady. But, for the unlucky riders out there, I just wanted to share some of the things I was taught, if ever you are a viewer go on a longer ride. Always carry saddle bags and have a few medical supplies in it. (For ex.- A menstrual pad and duct tape work well to temporarily bandage a cut on the leg.). Plus duct tape will fix many tack problems temporarily. Always roll your halter and lead rope up, and tie to back of saddle. Then if you tie your horse up, you won't have to worry about breaking the bridle. Plus if your bridle breaks, you at least have a way to control the horse. Wire cutters, tubes of antibacterial medicine, etc. Water bottles and snacks, in case you get lost. And always remember that every part of the pine tree is edible. So get familiar with how to eat it....worse case scenario, of course. I know I got a little carried away, but it really does pay to think ahead about worse case scenarios. I am so thankful for all the wisdom passed down to me, and I felt this situation might get others thinking about it also. If you ever are out of ideas for a video, would you consider giving pointers on being ready for the worst at horse shows, trail rides. What do you carry in your truck and trailer for preventative and emergency care. I think this would help many horse people.

    • @freespiritequestrian
      @freespiritequestrian  Год назад +13

Yes! We bring all of this if we are going on longer trail rides or areas we aren’t familiar.

I had an ex-Amish horse - buggy mode was amazing! She was such a star on trails, too - she would do anything you asked. I remember one of the first trail rides I did I ducked to go under a dead branch and it snagged in my shirt and broke off and stuck there, so we were riding along with me trailing this long dead branch from my back, across her rump and down to the ground. And she just kept walking. We fell in a pond once and she just swam us out and then snorted at me as if to say "what stupid decision my human made! We don't belong in the pond!"
Glad your whoops! turned out all right!

My mom would put it on the bottom of the bannister, going up the stairs, I would put my dads belt around the bannister and it was my reins! I loved the sounds of the saddle! Your channel shows how horses can be fit, rideable, beautiful and happy well into their golden years. 😍
It just crossed my mind that my riding instructor just did something similar. With a shortage of horses under 5 figures in San Diego & needing another lesson horse, she bought an 17 year old OTTB with protruding bones, no tone & little understanding of the rider's aids. After several months he's doing & looking so much better & is such a darling boy. Everybody loves him & it's amazing to ride him as he's continually transforming.

Thank you! Wow that’s an amazing story and transformation. Thanks for sharing. It can be a lot of work and risk when it comes to buying prospects but it’s completely worth it in the end. ❤️

Oh my gosh, that was scary! I'm glad everyone is okay and you found Bagheera so fast. She is such an outstanding mare and it is amazing how much she enjoys trail rides, her ears are going in all directions, always rotating back to you for a second, so she can listen. She has a wonderful home with you and I am happy that you decided to keep her and not have her move again at her age. And for her age, she is just phenomenal, hof forward, open and happy to learn new things, she is. Your other horses are awesome as well and it is always a treat to see you spend time with your students, husband and friends on trail rides.

Whoa!!! Bagheera is a speed demon. That was an amazing ride. How long did it take you to do the whole thing? It’s a beautiful trail. Glad that no horses or human were hurt or lost in the making of this video.😁👍♥️

Wow!! You guys really put the miles on. I use to be in a trail riding club and we would do competitive trailing. It’s fun and you get to do what you love and compete at the same time. 😁👍

Oh my biscuits! That's crazy how she just troting away like that I'm so happy ya'll are safe now! So we were ridding just walking after our trot and my friends horse that she was ridding spooked and my friend fell off and he canter away but we got him safe and sound but it's a big thing horses do these things that are crazy but we have to be careful and know that sometimes they spooked. Love ya'll ❤ hope Mikos nose is healed.
    God loves you! ❤

Yes for sure! She didn’t spook or anything she just was bored and started walking and then decided to go for a stroll and give me a panic attack haha. Meeko’s nose was just a surface scrape thankfully! ❤️

When I had my sweet girl a friend and I went out for a ride, I went under a tree and my hoodie got caught on a branch and pulled me off my horse slowly, as I came down to the ground my horse just kept walking, we were caller to her, when I clap my hands together she stopped and looked back. It was so funny. She was the best horse. I miss riding the trails. She was a rock on the trails too. Thank you for sharing and bring back some beautiful memories... If thing change for me I'd love to get another horse...

What a beautiful area to trail ride, and thank goodness you have well trained horses that dont panic a runway uncatchable, I always carry in my saddle bag, extra rope halter, lead rope. Screw driver, extra biteless bridle ,reins, and first aide kit, leg wraps, its alot but weve used most of it on the trails for emergencies. I love 💘 your videos

Hi Shea I'm not usually one to comment much but, I wanted to say I love your channel and I have not rode in a couple years when I had to sell my horses during the pandemic ( I owned a restaurant during the pandemic!) I miss them so much and I feel like I am riding again through your videos! I grew up mainly in the upper peninsula but, I have never been to the lower state.. looks like a beautiful area and I think it's great you trailer a lot to many new trails and shows! Glad all ended well with the mishap!
