This Video shows my friend Andrew Cardin TIG welding an overhead socket weld freehand and propping with a TIG finger®.
Walking the cup works great but sometimes its not practical to walk the cup due to tight quarters and limited access to the weld. Its also good to be able to use both hands.

Is there any practical difference between pushing the puddle and pulling it when performing welds of this type?

Man that is so neat. I had a chance in Job Corps 1992 to take welding for a few weeks and I learned oxy acetylene, braising and ARC. Now I just have a flux core Harbor Freight welder to play with after watching your videos. I sure respect that skill you guys have.I love to watch. I still want to make a cool hammer like the one you showed years ago👍

Really love this short video format! Hitting bullet points and moving forward is great- even if i I’m not that interested at first, doesn’t require a lot of invested time to watch and what do you know, sometimes by the end, I’m saying to myself, that was interesting!

When I first started learning TIG I too would practice alternating my hands, but it was a long time ago and I've been in and out of TIG welding in my 38 years in the craft, so im not as proficient as Andrew.

I met Andrew once. I went to piss in the bathroom and he followed me in there. We said hello to each other .

Great video, I must ask, why do you not use 2T/4T tig torches with a switch on the top like we do over here in Europe? It would make your life a lot easier. Atleast in the field, its not always possible to weld with a pedal.

Here in the US, this joint would typically be done using a scratch start tig setup without a switch or pedal. We used a foot pedal on this video just because we were filming some aluminum videos too.
