How exciting, Eurovision 2023 is upon us! WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE.
In today's video, I am having a look at official 20th entry for the 2023 contest for Liverpool. This entry comes to us from Poland who had their national selection 'Tu bije serce Europy' The winning artist is 'Blanka' with the track 'Solo'
Now guys, I really want to know what you make of the this entry in the competition and how it shapes up in your tops so far! Where was this track in your faves?

The worst thing in this, that Jann got 18 000 votes and Blanka just 6000. Then they recalculated these votes to points. Blanka got 10 and Jann got 12. So he landslided in the televote, but in point it looks like they were close... Basically televote meant nothing in particular...

I'm glad you made a video about this. One of the reason Poles are frustrated is that a lot of people basically wasted money on voting for Jann. He supposedly got 3 times more votes than Blanca, but it didn't change a thing. It's just a shame that polish jury decided to send something more generic and radio friendly rather than giving a chance to a great young artist.

No self respecting jury would have put this performance first. This doesn't even have to do anything with the song itself (which is a matter of taste, I guess. Not mine, for sure), but with her lackluster vocals, to say the least
I didn't know about the controversy until now. I was watching the nf live and don't understand polish so a lot of things were obviously lost in translation but what was crystal clear to me was that the audience in the studio was shocked at the jury results. They were booing when Alicia only got 6th and when Jann and Blanka got their points too so I was thinking, wow they have some passionate fans. But now the reaction makes much more sense.

Another part of the controvery is the judges aditudes towards Jann. One of the judges, Poland's 1994 representitive was on her phone throughout the entire oerformance and lauged at people cheering for Jann to win. After the show she called Jann and the song satanic. Basicly there was so much buyes against Jann. Also let's noz even mention the fact that they changed the voting system 4 days before the show when Jann was already a fan fav and ironicly it just so happens that Blanka wouldn't have won with the new rules

The rule change is the most suspicious part of it all. It was clear by that time that Jann was going to win the superfinal if he reached it. It really feels like they couldn't come up with a way to make sure he won't make it that far, so they just removed it completely.....
The truth is that the national selection was rigged and that’s why Jann received just 7 points from the juries and Blanka won them even if her vocal prestation was horrible
And I also believe people who voted for Jann also supported Alicja Szemplinska or Dominik Dudek. Blanka's song definitely wouldn't be the second choice.

During NF, after the end of the viewers' voting, when Edyta Górniak was asked to read the votes, she said: "Yes, I think we are ready [to give the jury's votes]. To be honest, I saw some deletions and changes of minds here, so it was a difficult choice, I must tell you." The deletions and changes probably took place after the jury (or at least part of it) got to know the results of televoting. It is worth noting that three of the five members of the jury are employees of TVP. In addition, Edyta Górniak claims that she has nothing to hide and consented to TVP publishing her voting card. On top of that, on Instagram, she called the following comment "a wise observation" "In other countries, seeing such a wave of viewers' dissatisfaction, there would be some reaction and probably a change of mind. [...] TVP does it at the expense of Jann, who was robbed of victory and at the expense of Blanka who has now received a wave of criticism and has probably lost her appetite for all this Eurovision"

why isn’t this on Eurovision channel? Where is Blanka’s live performance from national final? I noticed that this is what they normally put on there immediately after being chosen rather than a video clip. Is TVP embarrassed of what they chose? Are they tampering with the video so it’s more palatable before allowing them to post it the same way they tampered with the results? Or the way they exchange the 12 points with San Marino? Or the way they change the rules willy-nilly? Are they trying to avoid a backlash they experiencing right now in Poland if the world sees this shocking performance? Would they rather have the video clip on there? When is TVP going to be thrown out of EBU for being a propaganda tube, anti LGBT, anti democratic, for being liars and manipulators? There is a reason why Kazakh tv is not allowed in EBU and therefore at Eurovision so why is TVP still a member? Polish people deserve a fair treatment so give Eurovision to another broadcaster from Poland!

Well clearly the crowd loved him! Saw a clip that showed Jann performing better. Blanka didn't have a bad song and I actually quite like her but listening to the Poles, apparently she had a connection to SEVERAL judies. Blanka may have known the son of one of the juries (was she in a relationship with him?). To be honest, Poland has like four songs that could have gone to Eurovision. And this will stand out amongst the rock songs and groups, and she DID get like six million views or something months before the contest. But you're right in presenting the evidence about the article and they only revealed a top three for the overall vote and the jury vote, NO televote! Thanks for covering the controversy in a fair and a balanced opinion Luke!

My guess for the punishment, being banned from next year’s competition or TVP having their EBU license terminated.
We would all love that to happen but unfortunately the EBU can't look at this as this is not up to them to regulate national selection rules. Basically they don't really care how the artist gets chosen, as long as it respects the rules

Yes, there are many rumours and allegations, but the facts are these: national broadcaster changed the rules of voting a few days before the national final, Blanka showed this song and performance on many programs of national broadcaster, jury members were all associated with national broadcaster, among them was the author of Blanka's choreo, results of the televoting weren't shown on the show and the head jury later on gave interwievs indicating she didn't know the rules of voting. We can agree or not with the final verdict, but all of these circumstances are outregous and along with polish eurovision medias we're trying to force national broadcaster to show transparency about jury and results.

Thank you Luke for reviewing Poland's ESC 2023 entry Blanka - "Solo". Earlier today I made my own video on Poland's entry, but I analysed the official preview video for this song, not the Polish national final performance, and I think the official preview version is better. To me, it sounds very much like a Spanish song; one would be forgiven for thinking it's Spain's entry if one didn't know which country Blanka is actually representing.
I didn't see the Polish national final live, and I've not tried watching it on demand since. I've seen the results table on Wikipedia, but didn't mention anything about Blanka's jury or televote points / placing. Anyway, everyone needs to accept that Blanka won the Polish national final 2023, and will therefore represent Poland at ESC 2023. The way I see it is this: casual viewers in all participating countries who are watching the Eurovision shows from 9 to 13 May 2023, without having previewed ANY of the songs beforehand, or done any background reading about the artists and/or what their songs are about, let alone watched any foreign national finals (or read any Eurovision news about national final results, etc) will just see this as an upbeat, disco song with a really catchy, bouncy chorus, and they may (or may not) vote for this (if eligible) in the Second Semi-Final on 11 May. The point here is nothing more than that Jann IS the favorite of the PUBLIC. Blanka is the favorite of TVP. It is said that thanks to the acquaintance with the son of one of the jurors, her dancers are from the dance school of the other juror ... Or television is accused of greater promotion, because the artist played on New Year's Eve (yes. the one with Black Eyed Peas) I don't know. I don't want to get involved in conspiracy theories, but Alicja or Dominik Dudek and Felivers did a better job. And Jann was original and his performance blew people away. I watched the reactions of people from abroad to his song long before yesterday's performance and they were delighted!
There is even a petition signed by about 15 thousand ppl.
Just SOLO sounds like so many other songs on the radio and GLADIATOR has SOMETHING that could make us top 3.

Yeah....I don't think it's as simple as saying Blanka was poor and Jann was perfect. Jann also had some issues with vocals too. I think both tried to do too much physically, and it compromised their vocals. Jann was more on track though and very animated, and seemed more authentic and less contrived. I totally agree that having no backing singers and her music played at such a low volume, it left her singing voice completely exposed. The performance is a spectacle, but she would be better standing still and focusing entirely on her vocal whilst the dancers do their stuff. Lewis is a fan of the studio version, but she needs to work on her vocals primarily. It's currently my number 20. Lewis hasn't even updated his list for this. If it had to be Jann or Blanka, of the 2 performances in the final, I'd have felt Jann had more potential.

the jurors probably took catchy ness, being memorable, etc into account
While her vocals weren't that great, they were still better than Jann's
So, they might have ranked her ahead of him in that regard as well
They were probably rating the staging as well and hers looked less messy, more cohesive

Maybe they've had a native speaker or someone who's speaking it very well on the panel (just to rate pronunciation, maybe also lyrics and grammar) and they gave her a higher rating than Jann. It goes without a point to say that her English is better, which is no surprise, since she's got her High School diploma from an US school.
And there's personal bias against a person, although it might have affected Alicja (great vocalist, they ranked her behind Natasza, the weakest vocalist) and Ahlena even more. But it might be possible, that a person on the panel voted him down, because his performance was too sexual or because (and I don't agree with this sentiment, because it locked super straight, but I have read comments pointing this out) because the top he's wearing locked too gay for their taste. Where I come from, athletic straight dudes are wearing tank tops and crop tops, but those are things this jury member probably associates with being gay. And Poles are homophobic and are associating the dearnest things to being gay, even if it got nothing to do with sexuality, that's just how a homophobic brain is functioning.
And yes, I think, it wasn't rigged, jury bias and things they're supposed to be rating were what decided this race, and it eas the right choice, Gladiator might have flopped like Eaea with people outside the bubble. OK, maybe not as hard, but people outside of the bubble wouldn't have responded to it as well as to Solo. Maybe it wouldn't have even qualified.

This song is really good but honestly it was not the best choice for a winner. It is super catchy, I love its Spanish vibes, I love her charisma, I love the instrumental, the performance was good but it could have been better, the staging was good, her live vocals were good but could have been better and overall yeah it is a good song. The winner was honestly not one I was expecting but I am not mad with it but with the voting process and everything with the televotes vs the juries and all the alleged controversy to do with it I get why people do not like that it won but honestly I do not mind it’s win. But with the evidence I can see why people are sussing her out and honestly now that I know it all I kind of see their side. And honestly with the voting system and if everything is true I could actually see this getting eliminated (nothing against her, it is all the juries most likely) and Jann going but that is pretty unlikely. I did initially want Jann to win but after watching the live performance I can see why this did it, the staging for Solo was better and the vocals were more consistent even if in some parts they were flat. The way Jann presented himself in the end vocally and overall charisma and the staging was a bit of a miss so I get why this won. I am a little disappointed that this won but not made because there were better choices (Felivers and Jann were my top 2 out of a good selection) but yeah. This could NQ I feel because it is slightly forgettable and is just not impactful or outstanding enough to stick in someone’s mind. They could have qualified with Jann but then again it probably would have been borderline due to his persona not really being everyone’s cup of tea. It is enjoyable but it does not do enough really to strike me as a great song. It is a 7/10 for me.

I’m not saying it’s 100% ideal, but it’s kinda crazy how it’s different from what we’ve seen. I believe Natasza’s performance was also messed up, I didn’t like the song but I know she’s a great singer and she could easily rock a song like this with her abilities, so there’s something up to it
Also the staging for solo was done by choreographer who was also the member of jury
I don't really get the argument that an artist won't qualify because they're not everyone's cup of tea. Hatari qualified with ease, after all. You don't need everyone to like you, there are no negative televote points. You just need enough people to love you so much they want to spend real money to vote for you.
That's also how I see it, her song is catchy and has a great vibe, good instrumental, televote friendly and the jury was probably taking that into account as well, when they were rating the songs. I mean, after all, it's a televote only semi, and that's also why Let3 won the jury vote at Dora. Regarding her vocals, I also think, that they weren't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, yet they were still better and more consistent than Jann's vocals, tbh. And the staging, the way he presented himself, yeah, that was more of a miss and I also get, why the juries might have ranked it lower than Solo. Yes, maybe Jann and Fellivers had better options, but it wasn't what the juries were opting for, I guess. Maybe they could have performed it in a more dynamic way, maybe move around on stage as opposed to standing on platforms, maybe actual background singers instead of instrumentalists helping him out, but they got 8 points from the jury, not entirely a miss. I believe, the Top 3 with the jury were probably the most memorable songs, but everyone's entitled to their own opinion. And they definitely rated it to their liking, maybe they've had a bias against Jann, Alicja (even behind Natasza, who had the worst vocals that day) and Ahlena, maybe other things like English pronunciation could have played a role in their decision as well (my home country we've also had a native speaker in there, who specifically judged a candidate's pronunciation, whenever we've had a National Selection) and her pronunciation is pretty good, especially if you're watching interviews with her. And Jann's English still needs some work. So this also could have been a contributor to the end result NO rigging involved, just some jurors with biases and other opinions, imho.
I hadn’t heard about the controversy before, so I won’t comment on that…
But the song? How the … did this happen? The song (studio version) id ok. Not special, but enjoyable. But her voice live? OMG, that wasn’t that great… I fear another „Halo“-desaster happening 🙈 I truly hope she’ll improve until ESC…
I can see why polish people are so mad with this choice, I read many comments about how they wanted actually Jann (he was my winner too). I'm surprised that Blanka won the selection (then I discovered her song is very popular in Poland), even the song was neither one of the best ones... Now, I'm not polish and Idk very well the whole drama, the polish broadcaster got a lot of criticism and accusations also in 2021 with Rafal choice (and here I can agree with polish people since he made a disaster in Rotterdam). But now the choice is done and Blanka will represent the country in Liverpool
But still, it's very catchy and cute to listen, but it's the usual summer hit and generic radio-friendly song. And the performance... Idk what to say. She went off so different times and the performance was kinda lowkey for me, even here my score is more for the song

Her song is NOT AT ALL popular in Poland, most of the views she has are bought, and she was heavily promoted by the Polish broadcaster from the get-go. Most likely because of her rich parents that tried to make her a star since she was 14. Anyway, it's not about the song, and people would be fine with this choice IF they did the internal selection just like with Rafal. Yes, people criticized them for it, but there was no drama. Now people are furious because they spent money to vote for Jann, but it didn't matter.

Blanka is one lovely performer. I followed this show yesterday, it was in Polish, cannot follow wisely. What I realised, was that all sound mixing was poor., but kinda hmm. I wondered the most how poorly was the jury and televote system released., the per centage, also. no points from the televoters were shown. Personally I wanted Jann to win, but the whole show was kinda meh.

I didn't follow the nf so I can't give a proper saying on the controversy. The song itself is nice and cute but the performance wasn't good enough. She needs to work on her vocals and like you said a revamp can help too
