- My In 2014 I made a video titled "Removing a Frozen Fill Valve Nut". Turns out a lot of viewers were having trouble removing the locknut that secures the fill valve to the toilet tank. In this video, I show you a simple method on how to cut off a frozen locknut from your toilet tank.
You're more likely to run across this problem with an old-fashioned brass fill valve fitted with a diecast metal locknut. The method applies to both metal or plastic fill valves, so if you want a relatively easy way to remove a frozen locknut, check out the video! Not brain surgery and it works!!
Regards & Happy Plumbing

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I mutilated a kitchen knife because I had no hacksaw on hand but it was worth it! Wish I could track down the culprit that practically cemented that piece in there…😡
I know. This sucks. I know I will never be a plumber.
Same here! Ugh
Simple, concise, and easy to follow instructions! God only knows how much longer, and more expensive, this job would have been without you!
Glad it helped
Since our Uncle Frank (master plumber) passed away (86 yrs old) I had no one to turn to for help. It was indeed a frozen lock nut. I followed your instructions (used PVC saw) and the the problem bolt popped right off. My seventeen yr old daughter gets her bathroom back. Thanks Bob!
Outstanding! Glad to help.
Thank you so much! I was able to fix this issue in 2 minutes! I had spent two days trying to unscrew it!
Glad I could help!
This video just saved my night. Thank you, Bob! I was about to call someone to get this dang thing off, but your technique worked!
I can say, I had the same freaking problem. I could not remove the plastic screw. To make it worse when I was trying to uncrew it, the inside of the device was moving too!! So I could not unstuck it or uncrew it. Thank you for the idea of sawing it off. I tried for like 3 days to uncrew it. Took me 3 minutes to cut it off and install a new one. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!
You are welcome! Bob.
Bob- how do I begin thanking you. I am a retired widow trying to replace the “flush valve” (just learned that term). It’s taken me approximately 18 hours over a weeks time to accomplish this. I tried multiple wrenches and bought a duplicate of what I already had (approx $17). All along I thought I was doing it wrong. I couldn’t figure it out - so of course it was my fault. I used a drill - again this process took hours and hours because I thought I was doing wrong. I cried and yelled. Kept hitting my head to get to that tight area, poor eyesight, right handed w a left handed problem…Then I found this video of yours… another trip to buy the gun-shaped saw. Of course, I had thrown out my late husband’s. I did what you said and I just succeeded- I THINK it took me about 30 minutes (metal pipe/plastic nut). NOW, I’m moving on (finally after a week) to changing the flush valve. You’ll probably hear from me again as I try to do this. THANK YOU VERY MUCH
This is not an easy job, so don't get to hard on yourself. I demonstrated on top of a workbench to show the technique, but in the real world, it's a real P.I.A. I have a slight advantage in that I am left-handed and most of them are in pretty tight quarters. Good Job 👍
I kept looking at it, thinking it is sawzall time! Thank you for giving me the go ahead! It worked!
Glad I could help!

Dear Bob Sessa - Bob's Plumbing Videos;
I am so glad that I came across you RUclips Video "Cut Off A Lock Nut/Toilet!" I am an extreme beginner DIY Plumbing Repair person. Beginner is putting it mildly. So often when I view DIY Repair RUclips videos the presentor does the repair with absolutely no htiches, problems, or difficulties. Now in retrospect, I learning that often is not the case.
I needed to install a new Toilet Fill Value, when I went under the toilet tank and attempted to remove the plastic lock nut under the tank, it was totally unmoveble. I struggled in vain for over an hour (1) to get it to release. It was unless. The space which I had to work in was incredibly small & cramped due to my vanity sink and cabinet abutting the toilet.
I was just about to give up, when I decided to do a RUclips search. I came across your video. It was the SOLUTION TO MY PROBLEM! I had tried to use the hacksaw which I had. After listening your video, I realized it was too large & cumbersome to get down to the base of the lock nut. I went out & purchased the hack saw which you recommended. It worked.
Earlier this morning, I relucantly went back to this FROZEN LOCK NUT issue. I remember your words that it was going to be painful. It was. Your words helped me "push on" for close to forty-five (45) minutes. I was thrilled when it popped off. Thank you so very much!
Finally I am so impressed with the sign in the background of your video - ALWAYS STAY HUMBLE AND KIND. Wow what a great daily life reminder.
Best regards from a Flushing, Queens, NY original - now transplated to San Francisco.
L-CJ
Thank you so much for the kind words, much appreciated, But more importantly, you were able to get the job done. Not always a cakewalk, but that is how it is in the REAL world. Regards, Bob.
Thanks for showing me how to do this. I'm no plumber but once I sawed that locked down nut off putting in a new fill valve was a cinch! God bless you Bob!
Glad it helped, Great Job!
Thank you. You saved me. I have been trying to fix my toilet for a couple weeks. I've changed the fill valve before with no issue. Plastic not metal. I could not get the nut off no matter what I tried. I tried heat, didn't work. Tried plummers grease, didn't work. Did not have a problem cutting it off since I was replacing it anyhow. My toilet is now functioning the way it should. Thanks again. Hardest part of your way.....no room to work.
Excellent! Happy to help! Bob
Bob just used ur method got it off!
God bless u!
The pain! Thank you so much for coaching me through the process! I kept repeating to myself "you have to go through the pain" while I went through 2 bread knifes, haha! It WORKED! Yesterday, I was on Marketplace to buy a new toilet because I just couldn't get through that locknut! The twisting with the screwdriver was really long, it didn't snap easily, but I just needed encouragement to believe I was doing the right thing. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You're so welcome! Well done!
Me, too. I wanted to cut it off but didn’t want to buy a new toilet.
You saved me from a pity party when I could not get the darn thing unstuck. It snapped right off when I followed how you did it 😅 Bless you
Excellent! Glad I could help!
Thanks for the informative video. This is one of those things I'll be thankful for when I'm in the middle of a toilet repair.
I had a similarly stuck lock nut yesterday. I ended up doing something similar with a Stanley knife, except I cut all the way through to the lock nut in one vertical slice. Probably because the plastic on my piece was softer than yours.
I wish I had seen your video yesterday, as it would have saved me 10 minutes of futile wrenching.
Thank you. I had to squeeze down to toilet lid and just be hunched over. And w a lot of man power do this w a long jagged knife I happen to have. Then I had to also squeeze up against the wall w my shoulder while on my side to do the rest. Also I couldn't pop the nut off w a dang screwdriver or flat head. So I JUST tugged on the dang old fill valve inside the tank. It finally came loose after a dang hour of having to saw apart that thick lug nut. I'm super dang sore. And I am renting the place and just hope my landlord appreciates the job that no one else would do.
I know exactly how you feel, doing it on a workbench is one thing but in real life it's a bitch! Nice job!!
Thank you Bob. I did what you said and removed the stuck lock nut in my toilet. Great video.
Glad it helped!
Thank you for the advice Bob! It's not leaking.
This video truly was helpful. However, our nut was glued to the threads inside out...smhh. We tried the hack saw method without any luck. What worked was fire. Yes, burned it out! Grill lighter and wet towel. Good luck home plumbers.
Used this for removing similar nut for toilet seat. Bolted and would not come off. Got a full work out squat and saw.thank you sir!!
Nice work!
All I had to do was look at the photo without watching the video to know I had to unscrew from underneath. Use a screwdriver to stop the top screw from turning. Piece of cake!!
Thanks, Bob! I wasn't sure I would find anything on RUclips about this issue but I'm glad I found your video. Worked like a charm!
Glad it helped!
Bob, thanks for continuing to make such informative and detailed videos. Its situations like this where people can look at your well explained solution to their plumbing challenges. Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas in advance.
Merry Christmas to you and your family as well Kevin👍
Thanks for saving us with this one, a couple mins of sawing & it loosened up🍻
No problem 👍
Thank you thank you thank you!!! I tried with the hack saw and screw driver but it didn't come loose. So I got out the multi tool. I didn't do this first because I really didn't think it would fit in the tight area I was working in. But ten seconds later the valve was free to take out. I never would have thought of this had you not suggested. Thank you again!
Thank You for checking out the video! Well done!! Bob.
Thank you so much! Great advice. I didn’t have a hacksaw blade so I used my dremel to cut that piece off just like you showed.
Fantastic! Thanks for chercking out the vudeo!
Worked just like you demonstrated in the video…thanks so much Bob!
Excellent!
Thank you sooo much.I was all night crying that I couldnt fix it❤New Sub
Glad I could help
Calm the fuck down woman
In hard-water country here, some twenty years after the previous installation, that slippery plastic locknut nestled up next to the ceramic just wasn't going to budge. With the limited radial travel in tight quarters, everything I tried to break it free resuled in failure and frustration. Your Hacksaw blade trick here though got me to installing the new filler valve within 10 minutes. Great out-of-the-box thinking Bob. And thanks for your help!
My pleasure, thanks for checking out the video! Bob
Same deal, plastic on plastic, no room, 28 years! Got the hacksaw blade, he is going to get the screwdriver. Will let you know.
Hey Bob 💙 Your “hack” to use a hacksaw blade to remove the old locknut worked! You are my hero! Going to walk and feed the dogs now before reconnecting the water supply.
Thank You So Much, Been Trying 3 Days to Remove it, Watch Your Video Took 10 Minutes. YOU ARE THE BEST❤
You're welcome! Thanks for checking out the video👍.
Thank you so much for your help. I’ve been fighting with that bolt four days. I’m just gonna cut it off. Thank you again.
Glad it helped
Thanks for the video. This worked like a charm. Just like you said, the sawing will hurt and it did. Took some time since my toilet was in a very small area it was tough to reach. I felt like a contortionist to be sure. Fixed and all good.
OMG thank you so much. I thought I'd have to call a plumber! Thankfully had a saw on hand to cut this locknut open. Bless you!!
Glad I could help!
Thks exactly what I needed to know. No muss no fuss.
Great video. I had to deal with one of these a couple of years ago.
Btw, my toilet bowl had hand-tight nuts under the tank, you remove the nuts and you will able to lift the tank and move out to a more comfortable space outside the little space and use different types of tools to conveniently cut out the plastic lockout. I’m sure this removable nuts are right under all different types of flush tank
Worked just like in the video! Thank you!
Glad it helped! Thanks for checking it out!
Thank you soo much Bob! Absolute life saver! Came across your video and it worked a treat. Thanks again.
Glad it helped!
Bob...this insight/knowledge was on point! Thanks bud!
Glad it was helpful!
This video saved my sanity!! Thank you!
You're welcome! Glad it helped you out Thanks for checking it out.
Thanks for the video helped solve my problem! What a PAIN in the ass that was. Anyway my toilet is now functioning again 👍🏼
Very Cool!
Thank you so much. Mine was completely stuck on. Nothing but else I used would even budge it and I didn’t have a lot of room, but I ended up being able to cut mine off thanks to you. Cutting it off was not easy cuz of lack of room, but it worked. Thanks to you I was able to install the new full value in 5-10 mins after I cut the old one off. You’re awesome!! Thank you!!
I know it's painful, but the alternative is to remove the tank which opens a whole other can of worms! Great job...👍
*I JUST PLACED A FAT CANDLE IN A GLASS CONTAINER UNDER ONE STUCK PLASTIC NUT AND IT EASILY RELEASED AN HOUR LATER. I TURNED IT WITH MY WEAK FEMALE HAND. I DID SPRAY A FEW TIMES WITH VINEGAR IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS.*
omg thank you! I was going crazy trying to take off the stuck nut
Thanks. I just encountered this problem today.
As always Bob is the best
👍
Thanks for the tips!! It really helped to get the plastic nut off, it was a lot of hard work using a hack saw to saw it off but it worked after a while. Great video and tips when you have no other ideas.
Glad it helped! 👍
I have plastic that absolutely will not budge 17 years after installation. Dunno why but I will buy a hacksaw and try this. Thank you!
Thanks for your visit, slow and easy it'll work!
Thank you so much!! My boyfriend tried for several hours to remove this and we thought we were crazy because it seemed fused. Going to try this and hopefully avoid calling a plumber. Thank you!!
Edit: Yup. Confirming about an hour later I was able to remove the locknut, install a new fluid master and get my bidet up and running! Think of the money I saved on a plumber 😭♥️. Bob is the best!
You're welcome! Thanks for checking out the video! Bob!
Thanks. Just what I needed.
Glad to hear it!
It worked! Thanks from TX!
Glad it helped
This is the problem I encountered with mine. Going to try your technique tomorrow. People overnighted it on Install.
a pro move, txs for sharing
Happy Plumbing And Happy Holidays 👍🪠
Great video , thanks for sharing!!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks, for the tip !
Thank you!! This video was so helpful!!
Glad it was helpful!
The crapper I worked on today was in a manufactured home in Florida. Never heard of the name of the crapper. Told my neighbor to get a new one
Thank you very much! It really helped me!
Glad it helped! You're welcome, thanks for checking out the video!!
Thanks for this video. I had this exact problem and was just about to call a plumber but was able to do this myself and solved the problem. A little sweaty but saved me some $. Thanks.
Excellent! Glad it helped!
Worked great, thanks.
You're welcome! Glad it helped.
My toilet is snug in its little area so not much arm room or way to see. I got the lock nutover half down and it's stuck. It is not moving up or down now. Of course, we are doing this in the middle of the night after work since it was leaking earlier. Now, off to buy a hacksaw as soon as the stores open in the morning. I appreciate the post.
Thanks so much for this!
You're so welcome! Thanks for checking it out, much appreciated!
Sir, you are a Master. Luv that SNAP !!!
Wow, thanks! Unintended snap but hey it sometimes happens!
Thank you. I had this exact problem.
Glad it helped
This was the absolute best video that helped me immensely and actually explaining why the guard nut wasn’t coming off. All of these videos showed what to do when installing the fill valve but not how to get the guard nut off when it’s previously installed too tightly. It took me days and hours of watching videos, time wasted and multiple tools in our toolbox to get no results. 🧰🪛🔧🪚⛏️🛠️🔩 I found this specific video and you were truly a lifesaver! It took less than 20 minutes to get that stupid thing off. Thank you so much!!!! I ended up getting the Kobalt 10-in Extra Fine Cut Hack Saw from Lowe’s and it was a game changer! Like others in the comments, I was trying every tool, knife, etc. I could get my hands on, out of frustration! I’m sharing this video and have shared it for anyone who needs to install a fill valve that may encounter this. Thank you and happy holidays!
Thank you so much! You re truly appreciated, love to solve the unknown mysteries that can move the job along! Merry Christmas!!
Working on mine, gotta find a hack saw now😂. It was coming loose but whoever put it in smashed the threads down toward the bottom so can’t get all the way off. Thanks for such great videos!
You're welcome, thanks for checking out the channel! Bob.
This really works! Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
I am going to try this. Thank you.
Please do! It works!
@@BobsPlumbingVideos Finally after all this aggravation of a half an hour, I got nit out. I had to cut halfway and cut in half again. Painful, but reward follows.
Thank you it worked perfectly. I used my electric carving knife.😀😀😀😀
Thanks!
I was about to take a 🔨 to it 🤪
Thank you!! Answer to prayer for a repair!!!
You are so welcome
Yep, it happens. Plastic on plastic does freeze up on the locknut. I'm gonna get out my hacksaw. Thanks a bunch.
UPDATE: The hacksaw cut the plastic up to the nut but not the nut. I took drastic measures hoping I could melt the nut with my grill lighter. IT WORKED! Once alight the plastic kept burning on its own until it fell off. I don't know if that was a smart move on my part but it's done and no leaks. Hurray, time to rest.
Hello Bob Great demonstration & I love that you show what tools you use. Bob in live in Texas can you show me how to correctly remove & install a SharkBite fitting on a copper pipe? When you have the time. I always watch all your new videos .Merry Christmas to your family James Gonzales
Check this video out James...ruclips.net/video/CuqEibmPVRE/видео.html
I had a brass Douglas valve not to long ago and boy that nut was born on there , had to cut it out but what a difference in quality compared to everything plastic these days
Wow! Douglas valve, I haven't heard that term in years!! Those were fun to remove...😂
maybe it's minerals from hard water getting on there one way or another. You CAN use WD-40 on plastic like that to loosen it.
it does SOMETIMES help
Thank you. I put the pain in and got it sone
Excellent! Good Job👍
Thanks Bob, but what are the dangers of a tight toilet locknut? What happens if I let the trouble sit there? What are the consequences? Thanks a ton nevertheless mate. I appreciate all the spirit you put in these videos mate🤘
Most people with try and try to remove it with bigger tools and eventually will end up cracking the toilet tank. I've done it ! I learned the hard way. Better to take a little more care, work smart and save yourself the grief !
Thanks
My Pleasure!
Good old channel locks and put the beans to it lol
Hopefully I can use that silver mini hacksaw to do the whole job it's the cheapest option near me...wish me luck
Thanks for this video.. trying to remove a fused metal fuel valve to a 1947 american standard tank without breaking the porcelain.. tank is off the bowl but the entire mechanism is metal. Hoping to salvage tank.. any ideas? Try same method? Thnx
Get down as close as you can to the porcelain before trying to split the nut. This is the method I've used for the past 40 years.
Bob I want to have your kids thank you
Good video, would help but its impossible for me to get any hacksaw or power tool behind the toilet. I struggle to get my hand to touch the underneath bolt, any other suggestions?
Just use a hacksaw blade 24 TPI, wrap a rag around one end to act as a padded handle face the teeth away from you and hack away. Not easy, not pleasant but it'll work. I've done it!
Thanks for this video... What can I do if the valve and nut is recessed upwards (the toilet design at the back is not flat like in your video) and the toilet is right next to the wall... I have no way to remove it or barely fit a hand in there.
Send me a couple or photos if you can. Send them to - info@robertsessaplumbing.com.
@@BobsPlumbingVideos you're very kind to offer help... I'll send you the photos.
Do i tighten the new nut by hand, or channel locks?
Tighten by hand, followed by maybe one or two turns with the channel locks. Don't kill it, It's porcelain and it will crack.
Will all that shaking break the tank? Or make water leak somewhere?
No, there's a pretty beefy "V" shaped gasket at the base of the fill valve that will seal things up.
So I'm in this predicament this very moment. Just to clarify, that is a nut and threading (separate pieces) right??? It's not just one piece of plastic made to look like a nut threaded up this pipe, correct? Before I take a saw blade to this as the last resort, I've sprayed some oil on it to see if it will come loose.
Unless some genius decided to glue them together, they're separate pieces, always.
I have been trying to fix a leak in my shower where the shower arm threads into the pipe behind the wall. It keeps leaking. I used tape, and "t plus 2". What am I doing wrong?
Any chance the shower arm has a small crack in the threads where it screws into the fitting in the wall?
Probably the way I would do it. Plastic is easy but I definitely find a multitool very useful for cutting siezed metal nuts. Slowly does it and plenty of patience as on ceramic one bad slip could crack the ceramic and game over.
Newbie question. Im want to change my toilet seat. Should i be able to get that plastic lock nut off by just using my fingers...without a wrench? Or should i be able to loosen them fairly easy w a wrench? The screws refuse to turn at all and im assuming I should try to loosen the lockouts from underneath. Help!
Plastic lock nuts below w/ iron or brass bolts? Or all plastic? I use a pair of straight pliers to get it started and then it should back off easily. If you have all metal (locknuts and bolts) it could be a problem and cutting it off may be a better option
@@BobsPlumbingVideos looks like its all plastic. I will try to get it started with pliers. Thank you so much for your quick response!
Thanks for your help.....I did it on my own....got the seat off and was able to install my bidet. No handyman or plummer needed! You're awesome!
Okay so I was doing as you said, I got a hack saw and started sawing like how you did and when I got my screw driver (like the one you used) it wouldn’t work. Now there’s a gap and the screw driver can’t make the washer thing that’s stuck to the toilet snap
Make a second cut to widen the gap to fit your screwdriver.
can use rotary tool with cut off wheel
If you can fit it in the space, use caution when using power tools please!!
Mine is stuck in the pipe that brings in water from the wall, is there any way to get it out? The fill valve is detached but what is left of it is stuck…
This may help.ruclips.net/video/JfzMtnAIbsM/видео.htmlsi=1eSChlWtlsatr_Hw
Hi Bob, the problem with my toilet is I have a brass fill valve with the plastic nut that is stuck on it and the water line hose is also will not budge what can i do?

I would have crushed it with channel locks.🤣🤣

Thats’s Bradley! Thanks for asking👍
Exactly me
Which way do we turn the plastic lock nut to remove it ?
Counter clockwise, to the left!
@@BobsPlumbingVideos Yes I figured that much, just wanted to be safe and not cause the tank to crack. Anyway, its not coming off, only 3' around to work.Might have to hand saw it off if I can't find my Dremel piece to lock in saw bit. Thanks for the quick reply.
Hello mr Anglegrinder
